[link to this post]

Hi looking for some advice as being given the run around by bt and or. If my cabinet is fttc enabled and others are able to get superfast bt infinity from this who live further away what reason could there be for me not being able to

Line routing may be that the wiring goes down one side of the road and crosses your house and then comes back to you...

Is your ADSL attenuation identical to the neighbours, and have you double checked they are on the same cabinet via the checker.

Definitely same cabinet. Rural location and only 1 cab. People nearer and further away on both slides of the road able to get super fast. So not sure what the issue is bt very unhelpful

one answer might be that the cabinet is served by multiple cables, some having a higher loss than others, and you are on one which has a higher loss than your neighbour

Oh, so you can get FTTC. The best thing to do is to get it and see what your line stats look like.

This is getting a bit confusing. So you have BT Infinity FTTC already. Your estimated speed is 13-19 Mbps (it would still be nice to see the full output from the BT checker) and your actual speed is 6.5Mbps. Is that right? What speed did BT indicate you should get when you placed the order (they have to provide this)?

For the best line stats get yourself a HG612 3B from Ebay, unlock it and use either HG612 stats or DLSTATS, available Here.

I think it is possible to get some other stats from the home hub, but not as comprehensive as the two programs above.

Yes, those are the limited line stats available from the HH5.

There is clearly something wrong as your upstream margin is way above the minimum but your upstream sync is too low. Also your downstream margin is above target and your downstream sync is very low.

Looks like you have a very noisy line which could be caused by a bad install or a line fault or excess filtering or non-copper line, something like that.

I'd be guessing you've had a bad install done, or there is a fault of some description. You're only real course of action at the moment is to keep hassling BT Retail until they send out an engineer.

when the engineer fitted the HH5 he said there was a DSL fault on the line, although BT claim that there isn't. Is it BT that need to sort this or Opernreach?

It makes no difference to you, your contract is with BT Retail and you are not allowed to talk to Openreach, so you need to talk to BT. In practice it will probably be Openreach that fixes anything.

The line attenuation is high - I'd day that's about 1.2km+ of cable. Are you any like that far from the cabinet? If you are a lot close than that, then this is either a very convoluted route or a very poor line. If you can compare the attenuation stats then it would allow for a comparison. I suppose it might also be a line card fault. The OR engineer who installed this (assuming it was an OR engineer) should have been able to do some tests at the time.

The upstream noise margin is about 11dB higher than it needs to be, so it could, in principle sync at a much higher speed. Quite why it hasn't, I don't know, although I'd speculate it might be that upstream sync is set never to be higher than a fixed fraction of the downstream.

In any event, if the stats are wildly different from your neighbours, and you are on BTinternet, you may get more help going through the BT Broadband forum. I think there some broadband staff who deal with problems and will have access to more diagnostics.

thanks all.

I'm about 400m from the cabinet, but in a rural location so i guess not always a straight line, although neighbours either side of me are able to get super fast broadband. When i run the phone test it does say that there is a fault on the line from 17th, but BT denied this yesterday when i spoke to them.

Don't really understand the attenuation point, is this something that BT need to sort

If the automated test says you have a fault, then that needs fixing. Your broadband won't work properly if there's a fault on the line. BT must send an engineer to fix it. Here's how to report it http://www2.ais.bt.com/static/i/microsite/help_and_t...
