Infinity 2 from ADSL: Is it this easy?

[link to this post]

So, BT finally offering up FTTC for me, which is great. I have a 15 year old BT engineer install of ADSL, with a master socket that has all the filters in it, and my ADSL runs off an extension wire that BT fitted at the time to my study.

BT supposed to do the install this morning but apparently the cabinet wasn't wired up or some such. BT call centre in India says that the work will be done tonight by 11 pm, which sounds unlikely. Anyway, at the changeover, do I just unplug my old Netgear Modem/Router and plug the RJ11 cable into the new HomeHub and it just works at a much faster speed without touching the master socket? Seems a bit too easy.

Yes. It is that easy!

Depending on how the ADSL engineer wired that extension, which is probably fine, you should get near the top of clean estimate from this checker. What estimates does it give you? (A copy and paste of the two VDSL2 lines will do, don't worry about the formatting smile).

Well, lets hope so. I'll use the HomeHub as a modem at first and migrate all my services (printer, network drives etc) later.

Suspect it'll be a while before you get service yet, it's showing as waiting list so Openreach will need to install a new line card.

Superb. The likelihood of any problem from your extension wiring almost vanishes.

Uh oh! frown !! !!!

Waiting list may mean it just isn't going to happen right now. It means the cabinet is full. What we don't know is whether the "full" includes you or excludes you.

It is possible what you said in your OP, "BT supposed to do the install this morning but apparently the cabinet wasn't wired up or some such. BT call centre in India says that the work will be done tonight by 11 pm, which sounds unlikely" was to do with this. CS trying to explain it to you.

With luck they mean your cabinet is scheduled to get an additional line card tonight. If so, it's unlikely you will be connected tonight but by tomorrow night is a possibility.

The tale told by India is somewhat confusing, but the presence of a waiting list shouldn't affect the OP.

The waiting list affects whether an order can be placed or accepted in the first place. Once the order has been accepted, a port (and tie cable pair) has been allocated, and is held through to the installation appointment. Shirley?

I agree in theory, but I'm sure we have seen orders accepted at ISP online signup time then nothing happened on the expected date. Only for it then to be discovered it had been rejected on submission to Openreach and rejected.

Necessitation a fresh order to go on the waiting list, assuming the chosen ISP uses it.

We haven't heard from the poster yet, which is concerning.

Still waiting for the upgrade. I have an appointment for them to phone me to tell me that it still isn't installed tomorrow. Pointless calls from BT call centre in India to tell me that no engineer is working on the bank holiday. Someone was putting a sticker on the cabinet on Friday afternoon saying that they were open for applications; was going to challenge them but I was with my younger daughter and heading to a music lesson.

The call centre certainly make it seem like the installation is imminent. I'm not holding my breath. Main issue is upload speed for me; I've got photos that I was to upload but that is a pain at a 1 mb/sec speed on my ADSL line (and my router overheats if I upload too much at a time...)

Speak to the ISP and see what the state of your order is. It matters whether an extra line card has been fitted, so everyone gets done in time, or just a port has been released.

You may be in the waiting list and only one port has come available. By the morning the top of the list will have snaffled it.

If your ISP doesn't use the waiting list, (few do), your order may be effectively dead when it comes to released ports.

Quite. But some do. It is an Openreach waiting list, so I would expect them automatically to proceed with the one on the top of the list.

If a new card has gone in then the waiting list will no doubt be handled. But orders not on it will have been rejected by Openreach at the time there was no availability, so need re-submitting by the ISP.

In the case of BT Consumer I expect they do have their own internal waiting list, but if I had ordered from them I would be checking the order status.

We get a few reports here of users who were given an installation or migration date, (not necessarily by BT Consumer), and come the date nothing happens. Only when they contact the ISP do they find the order was cancelled due to lack of availability, and they have to start again.

Is it still showing as available now? That would be good as it would rule out the single port having become available possibility.

BT fault page does not work; it resets the line/circuit after finding that it is running slowly - but then times out and wont refresh. Hopeless. Meanwhile I've had yet another text from BT saying order is complete. It isn't. Nothing has changed. Waiting for a callback.

Lucky for BT that my work with Ofcom is about broadcasting and not telecoms.

Wow, BT are really hopeless. Three times I've had callbacks from Level 2 engineering that haven't happened. If I call them, I invariable get cut off. Finally managed to speak to someone in sales who was very helpful and seemed to be UK based so I could hear and understand them. But I need to get an update from Faults apparently before they can reverse out my order and put it back in. Seems that the new cabinet, with stickers from my employer announcing availability of fast broadband is misleading as there is no capacity and no one at BT seems to know when there will be any. If they didn't have a monopoly, would they stay in business?

But many of those providers rely on BT infrastructure. So, from a capacity perspective in an area where BT infrastructure is the only viable option then it is a "monopoly" in many ways. But, over half the country do have alternatives to BT infrastructure so no BT monopoly in "most" of the country.

What is to stoop those providers installing their own network? No significant legal, regulatory or logistical barriers - just that they do not want to invest their own money but want someone else to and then complain about the costs of service.

I'm not suggesting that BT are stopping anyone from installing their own but as you say it is the economics. Other providers can find it difficult to move into an area knowing that a lot of people would just buy BT anyway if it was available. BT have largely had benefits of the physical infrastructure (ie ducts, poles, etc) in place already from the phone network. Others now have some ability to share these but I guess it is not seen as practical for most other providers for whatever reasons.

In reality BT are best placed in many areas to deliver services at a cost effective level.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

So BT( or rather, Openreach) invest billions to provide fibre based broadband and get slated because they have a "monopoly".

If Openreach didn't invest in fibre based broaband, they'd be slated for not investing enough of their profits.

What about Virgin? They don't let anyone use their kit what so ever, now that's a monopoly.

Change the record.

Keep in mind BT's historic and ancient origins, going back to individual phone companies "all over the place", with only Kingston upon Hull being effectively a remnant of those days.

Hull Kingston Telephone System owned and run by Hull Corporation.City Council - which may still have "a finger in the pie" - as I am not too sure of its more recent history.

Virgin etc were set up over a century later, as public limited companies, not even existing in the days of the "nationalised" PO Telephones. And were set up basically with only the delivery of Cable TV, and that was to relatively few, generally intensively populated towns.

Agreed

Bringing about the apparent "monopoly" of Virgin.

And also demonstrating that it would extremely expensive and very long term to establish a completely new communications network with connections "readily" available to every potential customer, from beyond Land's End to beyond John o' Groats.

Great.

What did the engineer do about the master socket? Did he fit the interstitial faceplate or are you just using a dangly filter still. AT which socket?

Just a cautionary note. (Or two). Don't mess with it until after midnight Saturday >> Sunday. And even then, during that night you may find you lose some speed. FTTC DLM does its changes during the night, not in flight at any time of day like ADSLx does.

Engineer said he'd never seen an install like that before; its a 15 year old engineer installed extension from the master socket with Cat5 to a RJ-11 port. He left that well alone, and removed the faceplate to do his tests and then put it back. So no dangly filters anywhere.

Speed somewhere around 75 Mbps down and 18 up. No more buffering on iPlayer and 4OD is the main difference I can see.
