8.8.8.8 is an "anycast" address: in other words, there are lots of 8.8.8.8 clusters around the world, and your traffic gets routed to the nearest one.
Checking the looking glass of a major ISP, I see they pick up this route in London (LINX and LoNAP) but not in IXManchester, IXLeeds or IXScotland.
