8.8.8.8 is an "anycast" address: in other words, there are lots of 8.8.8.8 clusters around the world, and your traffic gets routed to the nearest one.

Checking the looking glass of a major ISP, I see they pick up this route in London (LINX and LoNAP) but not in IXManchester, IXLeeds or IXScotland.

Theres a scottish one? i've never been routed through there in my life lol.

Anyway to ping it?

You can't ping an IXP: they are a layer 2 fabric. But you can see a list of members here:

You'll only get routed through it if your ISP is a member, *and* so is the network you're trying to ping (or their ISP), *and* they have a peering agreement. I do see several major content providers there though (e.g. Akamai, Cloudflare, BBC)

I believe that Aquiss FTTP prices are with no copper circuit line rental. Only the fibre connection. If this is the case are you OK with giving up your copper circuit (losing the number or migrating the number to a VOIP provider) ?

@partial was the only one to mention TalkTalk, and could have accidentally replied to the wrong thread. It's certainly nothing to do with BT versus Aquiss on Openreach FTTP, which is the subject of this thread.

As you said, TalkTalk don't yet offer any access via Openreach FTTP. TalkTalk do have a very small amount of non-Openreach fibre in a few places, primarily York.
