As I told you earlier, I find the BrightBox v. good.
EDIT: If you are having trouble with it, perhaps it is faulty. Ask them to replace it and use Siemens in the meantime if it is so much better.

My previous thread mentioned awful speeds I get with it, I wonder if anyone else had issues with it? Orange promote it as the best thing since sliced bread, in my experience its anything but I would think your problem will not be due to the routers performance.
My experience with the EE Orange Bright box wireless router is only praise, Ive had no problems with it whatsoever. I am impressed that an ISP can produce such a well thought out router and with the latest firmware, it now has just about everything required.
For accurate broadband speed test ratings, I would only use the BT speed tests, the thinkbroadband speed tests and ping plotter.

I note your small Ballyronan exchange does not have 21CN WBC. Your speed problem will be due to exchange congestion, unless you are using BitTorrents which EE Orange slow down to a speed lower then dialup.

I would think your problem will not be due to the routers performance. OP states that issue goes away with Siemens router.

I would state the performance of the Brightbox is excellent having used it on both ADSL and FTTC connections.
The Brightbox hardware is fairly potent so the excellent performance is understandable.

Hi falko89,
What are the issues you are experiencing , synch speed, throughput, wireless or ethernet speeds ? I would recommend a reboot and a factory reset which can be found in the advanced section of the router.
If you call the service team, they will swap out the Brightbox if it's found faulty.

Just installed the Bright Box and disconnected the old LiveBox. Have to say it was the EASIEST installation ever: plug it in, wait a minute, tell the PC (and then the tablet and smartphone and laptop) to connect to the new connection. That's it. It seems to be faster, though haven't checked it. The real issue for me is whether I can get the connection from the back bedroom. I never could do that with the LiveBox, but now it works a treat. Finally can use my tablet and smartphone in the bedroom!

Bright Box to hand and will install mine over the next few days but meanwhile continuing to use the Live Box. When the Bright Box is installed, will the SMTP settings change, or have they already, as I no longer get a response from the SMTP Server?
Current settings are:
smtp.orangehome.co.uk
Outgoing authentication with user name and password
smtp port 25 with no encryption
Using my own domain name, therefor POP3 settings relate to that service.
Previously all OK but not now. Any thoughts anyone please?
Pretty poor show that you unilaterally loose your second line especially with the Mrs one the phone a lot!

Routers have absolutely nowt to do with email settings.
You have settings right. You don't need Outgoing authentication ON.
You can also use smtp.freeserve.net or smtp.freeserve.co.uk and probably some Wanadoo ones as well.
Perhaps the SMTP server was down for a while; that happens.

Of course they don't, that is not the point. I was trying to establish whether following EEs arrival on the scene and a 'forced' change of package which included a new modem, whether the SMTP settings had changed irrespective of the router that was being used.
SMTP settings are often different with quite a number of ISPs if you are using your own domain name and I have direct experience of that being true with at least two ISPs. OK historically the settings shown have worked, and you believe these to be still correct, but that might not be the case now.
SMTP servers do indeed go down but seldom for 48 hours or more. Using the existing router, I continue to receive emails off my own domain's POP server, but no longer able to send out emails via smtp.orangehome.co.uk - suggestions of whether it is a waiting game for the server to re-appear on line or if email client settings need to change would be more than welcomed.
POP3: Current settings are the credentials required to pick up emails from my own domain name's server. That works fine.
SMTP used is smtp.orangehome.co.uk with authentication using EE's logon and password via port 25. Previously OK, now times out.
Turning authentication OFF for SMTP isn't the magic bullet to start pushing emails through smtp.orangehome.co.uk once again, so does anyone know where the problem is and suggest a working solution?

I was trying to establish whether following EEs arrival on the scene and a 'forced' change of package which included a new modem, whether the SMTP settings had changed irrespective of the router that was being used. If they do, it'll be a first! They are still accepting the Freeserve, Wanadoo and Orange POP3 and SMTP domains, and any Orange/EE user can use them interchangeably. OK historically the settings shown have worked, and you believe these to be still correct, but that might not be the case now. It is the case now! I am still using the Freeserve domains, and always have done, thro' many changes of package and routers, incl. Brightbox. Indeed I can swap any of my other routers back in and it makes not a blind bit of diff to email settings. POP3: Current settings are the credentials required to pick up emails from my own domain name's server. That works fine. POP3 works cuz it goes directly to your own domain's mail provider and has nowt to do with Orange/EE. Turning authentication OFF for SMTP isn't the magic bullet to start pushing emails through smtp.orangehome.co.uk once again I don't know what you mean by that! You don't need authentication ON simply cuz you are already connected to the Net via Orange ISP and it already knows who you are; so it has no need to authenticate you again. Having it ON makes not a blind bit of diff..
All in all, you are completely on the wrong tack about this. Maybe you spelt it wrong?
Why not try one of the Freeserve SMTP domains and see if that works?

I don't get problems with Orange email servers not working, it has to be your settings. Orange settings as below.
Orange email settings
Your Orange dial-up and broadband email settings are:
username
Your email username takes one of the following formats:
yourname.orangehome.co.uk
yourname.wanadoo.co.uk
yourname.freeserve.co.uk
yourname.fsnet.co.uk
yourname.fsbusiness.co.uk
yourname.fslife.co.uk
yourname.fsworld.co.uk
Broadband customers please note: @fs should not be used in email, or webspace settings.
email address
Your email address is your choice of name, followed by the '@' sign and your email username, eg [email protected]
You can use as many email addresses before the '@' sign as you like, eg [email protected], [email protected]

email server: POP3
pop server (incoming): pop.orangehome.co.uk
smtp server (outgoing): smtp.orangehome.co.uk
secure password authentication: no
outgoing port number

Those settings are probably OK always assuming you are using the email address provided by orange/wanadoo etc but WILL require tweaking, or a fundemental change to the SMTP settings, when using your own domailn name email address.
I would like to hear from someone using orange's SMTP who has this requirement and has no problems. To keep on saying authentication is not required is simply untrue.

Settings were OK and have not been changed. SMTP authentication is used for those occasions when NOT corrected the EE network, or don't you ever take your laptop out of the house?

I've used the Brightbox for well over a year now and have had no problems with it at all.
Setting up my e-mails was easy as well and i have my own domain name and just used the same setting as i used with my previous ISP - TT & Post Office.
I would add that i have to put 'auth' in front of my smtp settings when setting up my POP3 e-mail accounts as i have a business e-mail account and a personal e-mail running at the same time

May I please have the SMTP setting you use? Obviously your personal details can be disguised. I use Microsoft Outlook 12. In particular whether you have authentication settings unticked and the port number used. Do you find those settings OK if not connected to EE?

Well I have done so with all the incarnations to EE following takeovers and mergers. It is a VERY common thing to do and is technically known as Mail Relay. To make things difficult for spamers, non standard settings are frequently used for those wishing to use their own domain name. At the very least that has meant authentication to the SMTP server. Often very much more complex settings and sometimes a registration process with the ISP, e.g. BT.
If EE are taking the stance that I can no longer use their SMTP server for my own domain name then I clearly need to change my ISP!
Yes I could use a non EE SMTP server but that opens up a new can of worms.

SMTP authentication is used for those occasions when NOT corrected the EE network, or don't you ever take your laptop out of the house? Ah, OK! I was assuming you were talking about when you connected via EE ISP. Yes, you would need authentication ON with your EE username & password when you are not and provided the ISP you were using did not block port 25.

Using port 587 instead of 25 was the answer. Port 587 on which server? smtp.orangehome.co.uk? That doesn't work!
Were you saying that EE SMTP stopped working just when you were away from home? That would make sense as not all ISPs allow port 25. If, so why didn't you make that clear? It is a very relevant fact.

I would like to hear from someone using orange's SMTP who has this requirement and has no problems. Me! I use Orange's SMTP when at home for my Tiscali a/c and others. My settings are:
Email addy: Me@ Tiscali.co.uk
Incoming server: pop.tiscali.co.uk Port 110
Outgoing server: smtp.orangehome.co.uk Port 25 Auth OFF or ON with EE username/pwd doesn't matter.
Of course, when away from home is entirely a diff matter and it will not work if the away ISP blocks port 25 and EE does not provide an alternative port.

I don't use my EE/Orange e-mail address, and i never used the e-mail address i was provided with from TT or Post Office.
With having my own domain name I use the settings given to me by 1&1 who host my domain
So its incoming pop.1and1.co.uk - Port 995
Outgoing auth.smtp.1and.co.uk - Port 587

Of course it is and relevant fact so to be ablesolutely clear three different tests were in progress all with SMTP authentication via port 25
1) Connected to my phone line
2) Using a friends connection on TalkTalk
3) Via a wireless dongle connected to Vodafone
Never had a problem before but since Friday sending out emails timed out no matter which connection was used. Just changing the port from 25 to 587 and connections via TalkTalk and Vodafone sprang into life but not using the home line.
However switching back to port 25 and everything now works just fine. So clearly there has been an outage of some kind that was affecting my use of orange's SMTP server on port 25. So the case is now closed.

Yes, you can use Port 587 on smtp.orangehome.co.uk with SSL OFF and it will work on any ISP, incl. at home, even those that block Port 25. I thought it didn't work cuz I had been testing it with SSL ON.
It's a pure coincidence that it is the same port # as millar_keith's who was using 1&1's SMTP.

Wow, I am very surprised that TT don't block port 25. Yes, I'm going by this for TT: Are any services, content, applications or protocols always blocked on this product?**
If so what? NO compared with Orange: Are any services, content, applications or protocols always blocked on this product?** Yes
If so what?
The only restriction weve put in place is an email setting that helps protect our customers against unsolicited emails, also known as spam.
(For the techies amongst you this means we stop connections to non-Orange SMTP servers on port 25, and block NetBIOS)

My experience has been that port 25 is/has been acceptable provided authentication was used. But it is a changing situation that it is making it difficult, but not impossible, to find a common configuration that will work irrespective if you are using your ISPs SMTP server or connected elsewhere.

None that I am aware of. That's what I use for this ISP.
I have working solutions for a few ISPs where it is possible to use the identical settings in Microsoft Office 2010 to use the ISPs SMTP server whether connected to their network or visiting another. The added conplexity is using my own domain name which often requires using strange configuration features found in that software..
As an aside, I found BT to be particularly helpful in trying to achieve this aim but their appears to be no solution. However they could offer to meet my desires through unwanted cloud based services.

Most ISPs block port 25 at most, as per that Orange quote.
Note: We are only talking here where Orange is the home ISP, where port 587 is appropriate home & away. Other home ISPs may need a diff port or not have one at all.

Including O2's authenticated smtp server, which only listens on port 25. I always found this incredible given that many of their (mobile) customers are likely to be using a diverse range of networks to send mail over, many of which may block port 25 outgoing. What's perhaps even more incredible is that it doesn't have SSL either.
