speed test results

[link to this post]

Can anyone tell me what speed I am getting from the following speed test result I have just carried out on this site?

Date 02/05/07 15:05:36
Speed Down 3291.10 Kbps ( 3.2 Mbps )
Speed Up 378.25 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk
IP Address 81.77.76.63

I've recently upgraded my orange from 2mb to the Unlimited package, and am past the 10 day period. I should be able to get up to at least 6mb according to BT. However, I now find that my connection is dropping several times a day. My son's connection shared with mine through a Netgear router drops at least every couple of minutes. This is mainly during the evening and, yes, I realise the net is much busier at these times. Do I have a problem or is this par for the course with Orange. I've been with this company from the days of Freeserve and never had any problems until now. Any ideas from anyone?

Thanks

I don't know what more we can tell you as per the speed test, not sure I follow what your question is in that regard. You're getting just shy of 3300Kbps (kilobits per second, thousands of bits per second).

Not this is not normal for an ADSL connection, it should be stable..

You said your sons connection drops more often than yours? That would mean its an internal networking problem..

Try and get some statistics from your router for the line. sync speed, SNR, attenuation etc. If you don't know where, post the make and model of the modem/router and some one here will know where to get them.

Thanks for your reply. What I am wondering is what speed does the 3300 kps relate to? Am I getting over 2mb, 4mb or 6mb?

I've just checked my speed on my Orange account and, although they told me I could get up to 6mb, and a BT test shows that I can receive 6mb, my account shows I'm on 4mb. Am I being duped as I signed up to the 8mb unlimited package. Now I'm confused.

As far as my son's pc is concerned, I actually realised the day after posting this that we'd recently had sky+ fitted and our original sky box was put in his room. I checked his connection and realised that there was no filter. Having just had the Livebox delivered that day, I used one of the filters from that. All the other phone lines had filters (provided by Freeserve when I took up broadband).

At first his connection held very well, but soon started to drop again, sometimes several times in an hour, sometimes after a few hours.

I'm debating on fitting the Livebox, but being no technician am worried about messing something up. 16 year olds don't have any patience whatsoever.

As for the statistics, all I have found is the following:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 1979 2068 0 195 516 00:39:22
LAN 100M/Full 9342 3605 0 662 162 01:13:47
WLAN 11M/54M 3900 0 0 75 0 01:13:39

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4896 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 40 db 21.5 db
Noise Margin 3 db 23 db

Is this what you mentioned? Obviously this is showing greater connection speeds than I posted earlier.

Sorry to sound so dumb, but I have to be honest and say that, yes, I am when it comes to the technical side of computers.

Oh help! Just got disconnected again, it's only for a few seconds then comes back again. Any ideas why?

Thanks for any help

Your noise margin is 3dB? Thats terrible, that's the lowest I've seen a livebox actually hold sync.

There must be something in your house causing noise on the line. Take EVERY thing off. plug the livebox back in, wait for it to sync and check out though numbers again.

If not report this to Orange.

If they do improve (~7dB noise margin is a nice goal) they you unplugged something that was causing noise, and may need better filtering.

Sorry to be a pain but you misread my previous message. I haven't set up the livebox yet, so I'm still using my Netgear router.

Everything worked just fine before Orange upgraded my account to Broadband Unlimited. Since the upgrade (speed only) my connection keeps dropping although only for a few seconds at a time. Tonight is definitely the worst, cutting off every 5 minutes. As far as my son's pc is concerned, his is even worse, as he gets a connection but the minute he tries to open internet explorer he is disconnected.

Tried ringing Orange technical but got the story of tools not working so can't access my account. Gave up in the end.

Am going to attempt to connect up livebox at weekend and see how i fare then.

Like a lot of other people I am also experiencing slow speeds, day and night, sometimes going back to dial-up speeds.

Will post on results of livebox installation, as long as I do manage to get it up and running, knowing me it'll take some while. In the meantime I'll have a very angry son complaining he can't do his gcse revision.

Just an update to my post of yesterday.

As I mentioned, I rang Orange technical regarding the constant dropping of my connection. Although the gent I spoke to was unable to help me, today I've not dropped once and my speed has increased considerably, which can only be good.

Here's today's results:

16/05/07 12:11:04
Speed Down 3113.96 Kbps ( 3 Mbps )
Speed Up 374.24 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Port 80
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk
IP Address 81.79.47.231

Still not the 6Mbps I was told I could get but last night my speed down was only 0.3Mbps.

I'll check again tonight and see what speed I'm getting with increased traffic and post tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

I'm left wondering if there's any significance between my call or not. We shall see what we shall see no doubt.

Just one question for anyone who might know. Why does my IP address keep changing? Is this normal? I thought your IP address was unique. Me being dumb again. Sorry

Orange use dynamic IP allocation. Every time you connect you are assigned an IP address from a pool. There are positives and negatives to this, but its mostly not important.

Having connection problems after a line re-grade is common. Try to do as much as you can at your end, ie removing phone devices and testing your different filters and sockets to try and get your SNR/Noise Margin up before reporting it. Other wise they (Orange/BTW) will likely just declare your line not capable of the 3Mbps you have now and force your margin up and your sync down.

Thanks for that info bluebean.

I will try my best to follow your instructions, with just one problem. I can't plug into the main socket as that happens to be downstairs and my pc is up. I would have said that a possible conflict or noise problem could be due to us recently having Sky+ fitted, but my broadband upgrade request was made about 3 weeks after that and I had no problems prior to Orange's upgrade.

As expected my speed has dropped now traffic is increasing, but not by that much

16/05/07 17:43:05
Speed Down 2459.91 Kbps ( 2.4 Mbps )
Speed Up 374.20 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Port 80
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk
IP Address 81.79.47.231

Will keep an eye on it and see how it goes. Only one dropped connection all day too.
