Warning - I'm coming!

[link to this post]

After the recent technical problems at Nildram, and the underhand way in which they introduced traffic shaping/throttling, I felt I no longer could trust the company and so requested my MAC this morning. Amazingly, I got it quite quickly.

I have been looking at IDNet as an alternative for a while, but Nildram's actions gave me the push to make the move.

Now, however, I am in a state of deep shock. IDNet answered my initial email enquiries quickly. When I phoned, I spoke to a real person (thanks for the help, Tim), who was happy to answer all my questions. While I was still on the phone setting up the migration with him, I received the email with my activation date, this Thursday, and all the account details. I then called TS to check the settings for my router and again got a rapid response, dealing with me by name, not user account number or some arcane code.

Surely I must be dreaming? I suspect not looking around in here...

See you on Thursday.

You will have to get used to this sort of thing. It's a shock tactic used by IDNet to lift you up into their dreamworld. You will be the envy of nearly all other users of the Net when you get here. hope you enjoy the experience. We all do.

It's when you report a problem and Simon rings you up later to check that it's OK...

That's when you realise they operate a bit differently around here

True, but I wondered whether the change to a so much more civilised environment might initiate some sort of cathartic change....

Note that I'm not specifying the direction of that change

Wait 'til they ring you up to tell you there's a problem BEFORE you even know about it - then you realise just how different

Then when you announce yourself and Simon says "oh! it's Mr Yorkiepudd" you understand how personal a service their support is - it really goes way beyond what is reasonable for anyone to expect.

Just hope that techno numptys like me don't make life too difficult for them

My posts are my opinions unless stated otherwise.

/me has noticed you on the digiguide forums

I think what really brought to home the service of IDNet was them actually knowing me by name- and I'm not even the account holder! My partner even has a different surname (we're not married yet).

Anyway, welcome to IDNet- I know you're going to enjoy it here

Actually, being realistic it's not hard to do- caller line identification and a list of names/numbers and Bingo!

This isn't to decry them in any way- if that's how they do it, the simple fact that they bother shows an unusual level of customer care!

Yep - if that's how it's done then at least they've taken the time and effort to do so...little touches like that make such a difference to a customer's experience. Of course poor after-care as I've recently experienced at the hands of Evesham leaves you with a very different feeling !

Yeah, I'm good at asking daft questions. Mind you, I do think Russ has an 'ownership' problem with his software, he doesn't seem to like any criticism.

Thanks, I sincerely hope so. I moved to Nildram to find a better ISP. Six months ago most people would, I think, have said "good choice". Six months shouldn't have been long enough to destroy the company, but then my first dial-up ISP was Pipex, and I left because of their arrogance. Guess I should have known better.

I moved to nildram 6 years ago when they really were the best, bit like IDNET now from what I can tell. The main decline there has been about a year.I see on Id's website that migration takes 3 days.So does that mean if I move to idnet I will be up and running in 3 days?

Good luck I'm watching your transition carefully!

Don't go via Nildram support.

Back in April, I sent an e-mail to [email protected] and, to their credit, got my MAC within 1 hour.

Heavens knows how long it takes these days though, they must be quite busy

Email to [email protected], copied to sales and customercare on the grounds that their T&Cs don't state who to get the MAC from (pointed out!). The response came from retention - which is an absurd name to give a department that gives people the means to leave...

Know how you feel. Have you seen that they are taking one of their ERX's down Thursday morning, only they don't say which.

"Maintenance Work 2nd November 2006
Ticket Raised: 31/10/2006 12:45:53
Last Update: 31/10/2006 12:45:53

Posted: 31/10/2006 12:45:53 by Karla Aravena
We will be carrying out maintenance on one of our ERX's from 1am to 6am on Thursday the 2nd of November.

Please be advised that any Broadband customers connected to this ERX will lose connectivity when the maintenance work begins, however you will be able to reconnect to our alternative Edge Routing Switch.

Should you find you are unable to connect to your Broadband service after the work has been completed, we would appreciate it if you could fully reboot your broadband equipment by powering down for a minimum of 30 seconds before switching it back on and trying to re-connect again.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause."

How much 'maintenance' do they need to do. I hated Wanadoo for TS & CS, but I had very little downtime in the period I was a customer.

Roll on Thursday.

Yep saw that
Just another in a line of problems and inconveniences being put onto their customers.I don't know why I didn't move sooner. Alot of people just don't want the agro and hasle of a move.Have to say the way the support for Id' seems to operate I don't see any difficulties.A more professional outfit this lot.I hope most stay over there and then there will be even more capacity for us eh!.I'll be very keen to see what its like when your connected here. But I will bet you its a whole lot better than what weve been force fed recently.

I feel like a bloke who's jumped off a sinking ship and can see the rescue boat on its way.LOL

Indeed, this is how it was at 'Old' Metronet, before the Plusnet days.
One thing I do like at IDNet is the design simplicity of the options. Long may it last. I finally jumped ship from Plus/Metronet in March when the automated emails began to arrive with dire warnings of exceeding my very low bandwidth limit and all the consequent convoluted palaver of the traffic shaping.

But I guess I learned most of what I know about broadband in the two years before I moved, a lot of it from the old Metronet web site; the initial support here has to be good, as there is so little on IDNet's site.

One of the first things I enquired about was the meaning of the IDNet logo - it stands for Infinity Developments Ltd., which is a bit obscure on the site. There were a few people I definitely had to explain this to ... but as you may easily infer from the client list - notably the Zoological Society amongst others - obviously the 'ID' had to be worlds apart from one aspect of it's current American usage.
