connection down again!

[link to this post]

Its happened again this evening and once again I am using a modem to get online. Exactly the same symptoms as before. Fine this morning with a good, fast connection but I am unable to connect to IDNet in the evening. I'm finding it harder to believe this is a BT issue!

Anyone else having the same problem tonight?

No problems here, but it's a weird-sounding one... though to be fair, I don't think you can say yet whether BT or IDNet are most likely to be at fault.

Do you switch the router off after a morning session, or leave it running and hence connected?

I always switch off the rounter when I finish with the computer. I have just tried to log into my email account at IDNet (using the modem) and even that is not working!

Be interesting to see what tomorrow brings!

Try leaving it running. It sounds as though BT may be having problems with the number of users at your exchange, if you leave the router running then you should keep the connection.

Also, go to this site:

http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/

enter your telephone number and let us know what the results are.

Ah well, that blows that theory out of the water

I was expecting a red VP status at least.... time for a call to CS, there's clearly something odd somewhere that a few posts on a forum are unlikely to clear.

Hi Alan

BT do have an MSO (Major Service Outage) notice out again tonight. Again is it affecting their Authentication Platform, I'm afraid that they have not given an expected time-to-fix.

Is that likely to be a BT problem?

Simon

I had the same problem again Sunday (5th) evening around 6pm-10pm. My daughter is convinced it's a pre-bedtime conspiracy against her! Is it still BT outage? If so, have they given any indication of when the problem is likely to be consigned to history?

I only know about the outage because I occasionally look at the forum. I couldn't see anything on the Idnet website on a (very) quick browse but I am just wondering if there is more that can be done to inform users more generally.

I had the same problems that you describe on sunday.

I too use a modem and have had problems like this off and on for the time I have been with IDnet (just over a month and half).

To begin with it was a slight irritation - normally 2 attempts (remote comp not responding error) but has got much worse to the point I get worried about switching off my connection.

It was appalling at the time of the supposed BT problems but it still comes and goes. Sunday was the worst - approx 6.30pm and I spent about 20mins-30mins trying to sign on. Very frustrating.

I assume that BT still havent fixed the issue that was mentioned on the 2nd. Has there been an update on the issue and an indication of a possible fix time? or is this a possible separate issue I should call IDnet about?

Quite amusing really - wanted to see if my post here had got any replies, tried to connect to the internet at approx 5.35pm and had another 10 minutes of the same difficulties as last night.

90% likely to be the same BT problem but without anyway to be sure I better make time to call IDnet tomorrow to see if this is the case.

Its taken me since 5pm (its now 19.30) to connect to IDNet tonight. It was the same last night, its really starting to annoy me. I consider the 24.99 fee fair as the service is usually spot on but this is the second time I've had a problem with IDNet regarding connection. I usually get 6.5mb at peak times so I'm guessing my problem of not connecting isn't down to congestion. The error messages are "didn't respond in a timely manner" but also tonight "734 PPP protocol was terminated" anyone know if that means problem with me, BT or IDNet???

Cheers

I came across this, any help?
Also some USB modems have this problem.

In reply to:

Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated.

This error is generally caused by you using the wrong username or password. The "Include Windows logon domain" check box is selected or the "Require secured password" setting is selected.

FIX 1:

Confirm Username and Password or renter them before connecting. Check that Caps etc are not on. Most logins are case sensitive.

FIX 2:

Click "Start", point to "Connect To", and then click your dial-up connection.

Click "Properties", and then click the "Options" tab.

Click to clear the "Include Windows logon domain" check box (if it is selected), and then click OK.

FIX 3:

Click "Start", point to "Connect To", and then click your dial-up connection.

In the "Connect" dialog box, click "Properties".

Click the "Security" tab.

Under "Security options", click "Allow unsecured password" in the "Validate my identity as follows" box, and then click "OK".

I have been having the same problem. It took my 1.5 hours to connect on Sunday evening and again 16 attempts to get logged on tonight. Getting the same 718 and 734 error messages. This is becoming very annoying. I have checked with a few friends in the area and they are getting connected to their ISPs no problem (not IDNET) so it seems unlikely that its a BT problem.

The authentication errors are said to have been cleared on 1st/2nd November, if you look at the full list of BT MSO reports here, Bill.

Browsing through the forums, there don't appear to be many reports of this phenomenon from other ISPs' customers.

I have been considering migration to IDNet, but this ongoing issue is encouraging me to hang on to my MAC at the moment.

The second post in that thread I linked to (this one) indicated that other ISPs were also having problems. I don't know which, I haven't looked, perhaps you'd care to ask Nerval yourself?

The fourth post (here) confirmed that it's a BT problem- Miriam is one of the main CS people at IDNet, and what she says, I believe.

Call me wary after over-exposure to PlusNet's 'spin machine' but it appears odd that the issue is not being widely reported (other than during the initial MSO period) by those who use other ISPs.

Fair enough, and I apologise if I came over as a bit snappy....

TBH, I think part of the problem may be that so little ever goes wrong with this lot that a few disconnects (and it does seem to be only a few users) becomes a major catastrophe that wouldn't get even a passing comment with many other ISPs.

And I'm not spinning, I mean that!

Thanks for the reply.

Went through each fix and everything was as expected. I am using a USB modem but this has worked fine on IDNet for the 5 months i've been with them. Maybe its time i dragged myself uptodate and got myself a decent router.

Thing is, sometimes it cant connect due to time outs and the other times its the PPP protocol message. Anyways it might settle down.

Cheers.

Yes, however, two posters out of a userbase of around a couple of hundred thousand or so don't really appear to be "widely reported" or, indeed, proportional to the number of IDNet users who seem to be reporting this issue.

In general, I agree with the nice things being said about idnet. But having escaped from the spawn of the devil (aka e7even) I'm a cynical old so-and-so and I really would like to see chapter and verse on the problem and whether (and if so why) it is affecting idnet customers more than others. Authentication problems, failure to respond etc. were symptoms of e7even problems for weeks on end, and sometimes I couldn't get on for days on end.

This is nowhere near as bad but I rreally would like to see some explanation and reassurance. I did post to this effect a couple of days ago, but so far no response.

I can certainly understand that after the E7even ( pause while I spit) cynicism and distrust are a natural reaction to the experience. I also went through it. It has taken months with IDNet to establish trust again in an ISP. Time does heal but I am still naturally cautious to sign up with any ISP for more than a month. Having said that IDNet seem to be the opposite end of the spectrum from E7even ( pause while I spit) and my experience here has been first class.
If you are having problems ring cs as they are extremely helpful. Unlike E7even ( pause while I spit) they don`t charge
