PS3 Connection Woes

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I have been using my PS3 wirelessly and get an average signal strength of around 35% from my Netgear DG834GT router.

The last few days (due to bad weather I think) my signal strength has dropped significantly and thus I keep getting disconnected from the PlayStation Network.

The problem is my router is upstairs and wired to my PC and my PS3 is downstairs hence the wireless connectivity.

I was just thinking as I have a phone line downstairs and upstairs, if i got 2 faceplates that have ethernet and bt connection combined on them, as I am only using 2 wires for my phone and broadband connection, could I use the spare wires to make a network?

I know i could use a big ethernet cable, but my wife wont let me drill any more holes, and I don't really want to spend money on them electric socket network things either.

Your help would be much appriciated.

That's an interesting idea. I'm sure you could but I don't know how.

I was wondering what would happen if you plugged each end into an ADSL modem - would you end up with a fast ADSL link?

Do you mean a phone line upstairs and downstairs - i.e. 2 telephone numbers, or one phone line with an extension? I assume it is an extension, otherwise there would be no connecting wires.

So could you move the router downstairs, wire in the PS3, and wireless connect the PC?

Also, many people including myself find that moving the router or the remote receiver by as little as an inch can significantly alter the connection strength and/or speed. Or 2.54cm if you are that age group . Same applies to the angle of the aerials, amazing the change at various tilt angles. (Ask your wife about that).

It wouldn't work, as the modems are designed to talk to the network not each other.

Using the spare wires - you'd need at least 2 pairs, and you'd want them twisted, to get a connection.

I thought only 2 wires were used on ADSL. If not what's all this business about only connecting to contacts 2 and 5? The twisted part may not be relevant for a short point to point run.

After posting I did think the ADSL to ADSL idea was stupid - but firstly because how would they decide which was downstream/upstream for the Asynchronous part. Which implies a difference in functionality between the exchange and customer end modems.

So it is possible then, so I take it I just twist 2 bits together to make a pair twice.

cat5 has 4 twisted pairs, so 2 should be ok then?

It is an extension as I have only 1 main line. I have thought about moving the router, but ideally I want to keep the PC wired.

I was also thinking about replacing the antenna on the router with a new one like the high gain 9db ones all over e-bay for under

I didn't realise you had two pairs. I'd try with an Ethernet cable wiring first. Use the pairs for Tx+, Tx-, Rx+, Rx-. Simplest to connect pins 1, 2, 3, and 6 straight through.
