This follows on from part 1. Could someone please tell me how many (if any) exchanges from the list below have been activated so far? My exchange (Inverness Culloden) is scheduled to be activated next month so trying to work out whether I should get excited or not!
Cheers

I'm on ABERDEENBALGOWNIE NSBLG Aug-10 GREEN and recently asked a C&W reseller about the situation. They said apart from the original announcement from C&W about the extra exchanges being unbundled news had "dried up" and apparently none of the work has actually been done.

TBH I think it was rather foolish of James to announce the 256 back in April without knowing any more detailed, accurate and positive information. All there seems to be now is FUD.
Of the original 256, I see that Aberconwy (WNABC) has disappeared off the radar and I've accepted now that it will probably never happen. The options I have at present are TT LLU (no thanks) or BT20CN / ADSL1 for the next few years.
|
|
|
I kinda feel the same way. Im stuck on the Woburn Sands exchange (BT control it not me), and without moving house, LLU/FTTC are the only ways Im likely to see any improvements in line stability/speed increases, and its been very frustrating to see that flagged as a site to go LLU live, only for it then to drop off the map.
It may be a relatively small exchange with only a few thousand users, but there are quite a few local businesses in the area also on the same exchange, so Im sure Im not the only one who'd take up an LLU/more advanced proposal than ADSL1 pretty sharpish.
Unfortunately without more proactive work from contending parties, BT is slow to pick up the slack to prevent us lagging behind the rest of populated europe in this area; and the LLU providers seem to have stagnated a bit now they've hit thier popular exchanges.
Doesn't put much hope out there for providing decent quality, stable multiple meg broadband for the whole country in the near future.

I'm gonna go with Xilo and hope this is still on the go - http://community.xilo.net/broadband/848-cpw-opal-bro... . Might have been a trial of some sort but it's better than nothing ie. only TT LLU available on my exchange. Quite happy to wait a while before Xilo offer it to all customers, probably not as long a wait than for C&W.

So is it likely that the Aug 10 for go green on my exchange (Dumfries) actually happened?
It's a bit frustrating that it is so hard to get proper information, you get your hopes up for upgrades like the 21cn but then it just goes quiet when the go green date is hit.

Mainly because C&W are being very quiet.

Complete rollout of all 256 exchanges?

No, of the ones on the list.
It has already been confirmed by C&W that all 256 will not be unbundled.

Same here. My exchange Inverness Culloden (NSICL) was scheduled to be activated on 10th Sept now it's completely disappeared! Oh well guess it's time to sign up to talktalk LLU and if/when C&W ever come to my exchange then I'll consider signing up with them ( that is assuming talktalk turn out to be pants)
|
|
|
|
I think I will be doing the same just need to find out 100% if C&W have pulled out of upgrading my exchange ABERDEENBALGOWNIE NSBLG Aug-10 GREEN.
Anyone on here know for sure ?

Can you check if Warrington Westwood (LVWTW) has been discounted completely now or just hasnt got a date yet?
It's small, and I'm not expecting anything but IPStream for years, but I would jump over immediately to whoever provides LLU first!

Same here, not even any LLU in the county.. and again we have lost all of the 21cn rfs dates. Maybe its time OFCOM made BTW reflect the second class service on these exchanges with second class pricing, cos it seems that no one is interested in bringing us into the 21st century! Funny how the RFS dates have suddenly been withdrawn since the FTTC roll-out started - am I alone in smelling a rat here?

Any news on oswestry exchange sky has just installed llu here now. anyway matt of piggy backing there stuff so i can get faster bb even though i shouldnt complain about 5 meg just being greedy lol

Nope
TT/CPW are showing minimal port capacity on their LLU though.

ahwell worth a shot lol like i said cant complain at 5 meg

I'm not that far from you, connected to Rhos-on-Sea.
I don't think Aberconwy will get C&W LLU, but at least you have a decent alternative in the form of Sky Unlimited LLU. They finished installing their kit a few weeks back.
|
|
|
|
That's my biggest gripe with BT.
I get that they're a private company with shareholders to answer to, I get that they are profit driven, what I don't get is why I pay the same line rental charges as Joe Soap in London with an FTTC cab sitting outside his front door and a 40Mb connection.
If they can't offer me the same product choices, why do I have to pay them the same money?
Maybe if the regulator stuck it to them and ordered them to scale charges proportionate to the services being offered, there might not be so many not-spots and exchanges stuck using antiquated vanilla ADSL technology.
As a consumer I'm not interested in hearing their viability excuses. BT made £1 billion profit this year, that's not a small amount of money. I'm tired of subsidising their aggressive attempts to grab market share from LLU operators and Virgin Cable, while I make do with a tin can and string connection.

Refreshing to hear someone share this opinion.. often when raising this point you meet with "tough - move" many people cant just "move", and someone has to be here to keep the lights on and the computers humming....
I have often been treated to the tired argument about being so far out - viability etc. This area contributes plenty to the rest of the UK apart from some agriculture (not as much as 30 years ago tho) , 2 oil refineries, 2 LPG terminals providing a huge amount of the gas burned in the UK.... and soon a Power Station, and with all that is a lot of heavy "support industry", 2 ferry terminals 2 military bases and a thriving tourist industry.
Its not all hayseeds and moonshine, we have a 500 seat call centre, which when occupied by ITV Digital was employing 1200 people, so right now its running under capacity but still we are stuck with 20cn tech while many 21cn areas are now being treated to FTTC in a vain attempt to compete with LLU and cable. We have high speed links here, "Updata" serve the local authority, and the Local college (and schools?) are on the high speed JANET link, but while we local tax payers and local businesses fork out for all this we are stuck with an over priced under-performing network and are expected to feel grateful for helping to bankroll improvement after improvement elsewhere while seeing ZERO real investment to bring our local networks up to anywhere near the same standard expected by those (who often pay less) elsewhere.
I wonder how far down the road our THIRD 21cn RFS dates will be?... or will they now give up kidding us that they are ever going to stop ripping us off "because they can"? They don't understand the fact that we have waited.. and paid through the nose for the over priced BTw services - its time we saw some payback, instead we are being reamed again while NO investment is taking place for us.

Indeed, the townies are quick to espouse the alleged benefits of living in the proverbial sticks, while the reverse logic seems to escape them. Don't like the hustle & bustle of city life? Smoggy air and a mugger in every underpass? Ok, move then. Works both ways dunnit?
I'm not exactly in blair witch country. We have 3 exchanges serving some 20,000 residential and 2,000 business lines, exchanges I had to work my stones off to get enabled ahead of time in 2002/2003. We have no hope of 21cn anytime soon and only one exchange has a single LLU operator in it (TalkTalk).
Our money bankrolls BT's attempts to steal business from their competitors in the cities, while some BT PR monkey tells us we should count ourselves lucky to be able get broadband at all, like they're some loving benefactor doing charity work in their spare time. Gee, thanks.
I for one don't want to hear it. I pay the same money every quarter, I want the same services, or I want a discount. I don't care who pays for it (hello £1billion pounds profit).
Look at BT's 21cn rollout and look at how many of those exchanges were Market 3 already, or had Cable. Not one exchange that I know of didn't have an alternative provider already there that BT could tout business away from. Viability my backside, profits first and sod the customers elsewhere.

Thanks, and PM reply sent.
I lost interest and hope in Aberconwy, so Sky slipped under my radar. Yes I agree that C&W LLU at Aberconwy is not going to happen any time soon, if ever.
Going to take a look at Sky this afternoon.

What annoys me is Norfolk County Council has come up with the idea of putting wi-fi on school buildings to give anyone within range FREE internet access to try to help areas with no or very slow broadband and what happens the same morons get their pitchforks and torches out and start ranting about how it's not safe for the children etc.
If I were NCC i'd say ok well stuff you all then

They've not lied. Some exchanges are live already. They rely on BT and there are factors that may delay things like construction/way-leave etc.
C&W actually have some maintenance planned for 1st December in the Manchester/Lancashire/Cumbria areas to support the addition of some more exchanges which is a further sign that progress is being made.

Do you have an updates for the other exchanges?

Hi,
I have been having some to and fro with Demon after some cap emails. They have just called to say my exchange will be upgraded to ADSL2+ within days. This is good, news. Well I hope it is. Now Cable and Wireless have upgraded our exchange is this likely to mean others with follow in my area. I checked Sam Knows and it doesn't show any information regarding this upgrade. Is their a place to find out other plans for our exchange?
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/EABTF
Best wishes

Not sure "within days" is correct as EABTF does not appear on any of the "happening soon" exchanges as above but its possible that it has been added but we've not been told.

Demon seem willing to spin any yarn to keep customers from taking their Migration code and moving off.... I have been in dispute with Demon now since August about poor IPStream performance and after much debate agreed to migrate to their Business IPStream Premium (ADSL Max) package - just as bad as before.
So, I get told my exchange (SSWSM) is due for C&W LLU "in the very near future", but they wouldn't say exactly when. I have an email to say Feb 2011 now (IIRC it was supposed to be September 2010) but I don't believe them.
So, if anyone is in the know, can you check if there is a date for SSWSM (Weston-super-Mare)... TIA.

Good news, my exchange also has a RFS date now! RFS date set : 31/01/2011

my exchange oswestry has rfs of 31.1.11 so hopefully it will get done and mean hello xilo pro

Heres the response I got from ADSL24 about the C&W date:
"I have checked our C&W list and your exchange: Toll Bar ...does not seems to be on our list we received from our suppliers ...so i cannot confirm as to whether Sam Knows is right or incorrect."
Looks like will just have to wait and see!

Mine is on the list, dates: jan-mar, abit vague Hopefully, Jan it will be, haha. I can see some exchanges with a range of months like mine, but some with just January, February. I hope that doesn't mean they expect delays at mine

WOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO Inverness Culloden will (finally) be activated sometime Jan-March. However i'm very happy with Talktalk LLU speeds and there's no way i want to leave Talktalk.......but it's nice to know that i will have C&W LLU in my exchange if i have a lovers tiff with Talktalk LOL

I really don't know, I contacted ADSL24 today and they said to try to sign up tomorrow using their website. And if it's unavailable then I should contact them and they would try to put a manual order through to C&W. I wouldn't expect Sam Knows to update as soon as each exchange is delivered. I doubt it will be updated until either they get another list from C&W or someone contacts them to say which exchanges are live.
If the Demon list is updated regularly I would think that is the best place to try.
Fingers Crossed!

Contacted ADSL24 again today, this is their reply:
I have raised an enquiry with our suppliers provisioning team who will check directly with C&W to advise us as to whether or not your exchange is C&W LLU ready ....if not ...as to when it will be.
once i get the response ...i shall let you know.
Hopefully will get some definate information and dates!

Looks like the list at demon is getting updated. The formatting has changed, more put as delivered. And now my exchange (toll bar) says January instead of jan-mar. Yay! I'm hoping it will be delivered in the next few days!
|
|
|
|
Another quick update from ADSL24:
there's a slight delay ...we should be able to sign you up after up to 2 weeks.
we have to allow C&W to allow us to place orders for that service on your exchange.
|
|

Just to let you know, C&W have updated their back end checker and newly live exchanges should start showing very soon, if not already.

Hey Matt, any news about CMTOL?
I understand it's delayed, but It's the only exchange left on the Demon list with a January RFS date.Just wondering if they are still going ahead with the installation, and if it will availible at the end of Feb (like the other exchanges listed as Feb, or sooner)
|
|
|
If your desperate to get onto LLU ADS2+ you can always migrate onto our LLU service on your exchange, monthly contract and free migration onto the product, then when CW do complete the unbundling of the exchange you can hop onto the CW service with Xilo.
|
|
|
I am desperate, but don't really want to move from ADSL24
No need to move, and the hassle isn't worth it for my lack of patience!
|
|
|

anyone had any news on what exchanges have gone live etc
|
|
|
|
Not me, I've still got January date everywhere, lol but still not live.
I think delays are due to BT currently installing BT 21CN at the same time, so the LLU work is being pushed back.
ADSL24 said to me there were being cuts to the openreach workers etc, so probably could be more delays!
So much for superfast broadband by 2015!!! HAHAHA this country is a joke, no wonder we didnt get the FiFa worldcup!

Mine is RFS Jan on samknows,Feb on demons site naff all happening in March
|
|
|
It seems all or most of exchanges which were due to be done in February have now been enabled
http://knowledgebase.demon.net/article/llu-adsl2-exp...
However SamKnows hasn't been updated yet, my exchange (Inverness Culloden) according to Demon is C&W LLU enabled. Now i can sleep a lot easier at night knowing that if talktalk (LLU) start messing me around, i 'll be off to C&W LLU in a flash...and i will happily pay the remainder of my 18 month contract. I'm a happy bunny with talktalk though

And now we have the issue that C&W have enabled exchanges on their checker feed that are not actually ready.
Clever them!!

Are you saying that C&W have given incorrect exchange status to Demon? Why on earth would they do this?

The RFS list is correct.. but the data they are supplying on their "live" checker feed is showing some exchanges are ready now, before they have actually been installed.

Thanks. So is my exchange Inverness Culloden (NSICL) live or not?
|

Can't really tell us the live checker data may be wrong itself.
Most orders go through, one or two have failed due to that error. If our checker reports Pro 16, there is a 98% change of it being ready.

Yes I am on cable (happy with it)
Had enough with BT as they never bring C&W LLU, ADSL2+ and FTTC to your exchange and my exchange in Telford.
The winner of exchanges for FTTC in Telford are Donnington, Dawley and Stirchley.
Really disgusting by BT, but I don't care as I do have 30 Meg with cable in my property.

Eh? It is not BT's decision whether or not bring another companies LLU to your exchange. It is up to C&W to do that, or the respective LLU network.

I don't mean the C&W LLU. I mean the FTTC was named three exchanges in Telford as they should be named Holliswood and Cuckoo Oak as well because why is Donnington, Dawley and Stirchley is named ? Really disgusting by BT decision. I remember The Race To Infinity that Cuckoo Oak had more votes than Stirchley. It so wrong.

Speaking of, any updated lists and info on the exchanges that dropped off the original list?
I'm hoping against hope that my exchange will get LLU and I can jump on board, but I seriously doubt it
No good being relatively close to an exchange if you are stuck in a house where they can't be bothered to put cable in and nobody wants to invest in LLU and have to rely on the BT network, wo is me....
plusnet 4/11/2003 -> 4/3/2009 512Kb-2Mb
O2 Standard LLU 4/3/2009 -> 23/6/2009 ~3Mb O2 Access 13/7/2009 -> 22/6/2010 ~8Mb
plusnet 22/6/2010 -> ?? ~8MB
|
|
|
|
Ah but it was about the PERCENTAGE of users on each exchange... so it may be other exchanges won with a lower number of votes, but that may have equated to a higher percentage of customers on those other exchanges.
Maybe someone could point C&W at some of the many many market 1 exchanges in Wales.
|
|
|
LLU would be nice, but with the rubbish line I get from BT it wouldn't make much difference anyway.
I live in a large town, not a rural backwater and it is a joke that apart from Virgin and the odd Sky exchange, nothing else is available.
I'm pretty sure the physical size of our exchange is the problem as it is tiny. I do know a large % of the resedential lines are long and this can also put off potential unbundlers.
C&W pulled the plug on the order for our exchanges for a reason. Would be great to know why.
A lot of people who can get cable around here do have it because the BT lines are shocking and Virgin are a lot cheaper.
Too have no TalkTalk can only point to a lack of physical space. All the other exchanges got unbundled, even Broseley!

It partly to blame down on Telford & Wrekin Council for not even bother to get fibre in the town of Telford and never will do.

They don't need too though.
Telewest spent a fortune getting a large cable footprint in the town. I would say a high % of the town is covered by Virgin who are now providing 100Mb speeds.
Unfortunately if your house was built after 1998, you are stuck as Telewest pulled the plug on new builds like mine.
-

Because a) people may actually want Sky or Be as it is cheaper and uncapped b) any house built after 1998 will not be a cabled street so we have no choice.
More people on Virgin, the less demand for LLU services so we are stuck paying a premium to use the BT network.

If your Virgin connection is running flat out at 30Mb then stick with them.
Vivaciti do an SMPF CPW LLU service, which means you can keep BT on the voice line. Makes it a lot easier to migrate in the future.
Even if you live next door to the exchange, you will be still 6mb down on what you're getting on cable, for the same price.
I'd wait for Sky, they'll probably unbundle Cuckoo Oak eventually.

Not a chance wolvesmad, I don't think Sky won't be bothered to do any more LLU unbundle in Telford area. I hate Sky too cos they are very expensive in TV packages, of skyworld cost £52 a month!
I stick to my freedom humax freesat with free of charge recording, playback, live pause but sky+ feature cost £10 extra a month if you want recording, playback and live pause, so I stick my two fingers up on Robert Murdoch!

It free of charge with plusnet but BT doesn't charge me for reconnection back. But virgin media charged me £75 for penalty leave early. I left virgin media because 100 meg had been downtime 11th times in a month, just had enough and also well overpriced 100 meg at £45 a month but they can downgrade me to 10 Meg at £28 a month because I will lose loyalty discount, virgin is a scam! I told them to forget it, they charged me £75 plus £45 for penalty leave as I broke their 12 months contract!

Not really a scam though. That is the price they charge, simply because you're not happy to pay that does not mean they're scamming you.
I was thinking more about all the times you've switched between providers left, right and center and then back to virgin, away from virgin. This must be a fair amount of money.
Should we expect you going back to Virgin within the year? I'll wage a bet on that

Too be honest Matt, Virgin in this town (I live in the same Town as Adslmax) is very hit and miss.
Due to long BT lines some areas are very low on capacity on Virgin. My mate who has Virgin 10mb gets 2-3Mb after 5pm.
All Virgin do is credit his account when he complains.
If I had a line as short as Adslmax's though, i'd stick with ADSL, with Xilo of course
|
|

My Virgin Media 100 Meg had been dropped to 42 Meg on superhub and the superhub sometimes disconnection for no reason, Poor superhub with poor wireless all over the place. I had phoned and complaint of speed dropped to 42 Meg (almost 50% loss of speed) in evening and weekend and they won't refunded me, Glad I left rubbish Virgin Media and that 100 Meg is a not true 100 Meg because of burst speed show 97 Meg on website but only get 4Mb/s on download transfer rate. Also on youtubes, apple movies trialer and bbci player all constantly buffering!
