Moving plus.net Phone/ADSL >> Uno Phone/Fibre

[link to this post]

So I'm moving from plus.net to Uno Broadband.

What I'd like to do is move to my phoneline + ADSL2 (BTW) over to phoneline + Fibre+ (Uno Product over BTW)

1) What's the best way to do this?
2) I've suffered a shed load of congestion issues at peaktime with Plus Net, will this happen on Uno Fibre+?

I'm an ex Xilo customer so know how this company work (very well) but this move is confusing me.

Can anyone advise me?

EE 4G for now, and Plus Net soon...

For the first time ever, I have had to wait 2-3 days for an answer to a support ticket - normally get an answer within an hour. It's nothing that important, the usage stats seem to be borked (on fibre).

I just hope that Uno/Xilo has not grown too fast.

You'll need to move the connection/FTTC to us first.

Once done, please get in touch and we can then do the phone line for you.

If the congestion is at the BT layer, yes it could but it'll be very easy to see if that is the case and we can get that resolved for you. It you migrate and the problems instantly go away, it would have been an issue with the old provider.

You're such a breathe of fresh air, answering two queries in one shot, compared to what I've been through, thanks, I'll migrate on pay day, and I seriously cannot wait.

As it's fibre, can I still use my old router or I do I have to buy a new VDSL one?

If he is on a standard Plusnet installation he will have an ADSL2+ router that does not have an ethernet WAN port. So he'll need a "cable" router of some kind.

Though Plusnet have firmware to flash in on the (acceptable) 582n and presumably their latest (trash) offering to turn LAN4 into WAN.

Thank you Uno - fibre is on and activated with no hassle, speedtests all over the shot but it's the first 10 days so waiting for everything to settle down.

Things got a bit prickly with the previous phone provider, threatening to cut the service, so had to raise a sudden phone order and yep (the man who never sleeps - Matt) and a mystery man on the telephone gave me loads of advice, came through for me and got it ordered within the hour.

Nice job guys and cheers.

No such thing as a 10 day period.
2.2.1 Dynamic Line Management

Dynamic Line Management (DLM) is employed in GEA-FTTC. DLM constantly manages lines to maintain a target link quality (speed and stability). It does this for as long as the product exists.
At provision, the line is put on wide open VDSL2 line profiles allowing the upstream and downstream line speeds to run at the upper limit of the product option selected.
On the first day of operation, DLM will intervene if severe instability is detected. Otherwise, DLM will wait until the day after provision before deciding if it must intervene, provided that the line has been trained up for at least 15 minutes during the preceding day.

BT Wholesale, which I doubt if uno are using for FTTC, think there is, but it was always a BT Wholesale thing on ADSLx. Not Sky, not TalkTalk. Not O2/Be, not C & W.

It didn't ever have anything to do with the line deciding if it could go faster. This is what BT Wholesale use it for, and on Openreach FTTC if they continue to do so then it is a nonsense. It certainly isn't doing anything special to your speeds in the first 10 days.

[re: RobertoS] [link to this post]

This is why I asked the DLM question....

Well I'm chuffed to bits with the connection and the service from Xilo / Uno

So my sync speed is:

16,961 / 59,563

My BQM is this:

BQM Graph

Speed Test from here is:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/button/14474...

BTW Speedtest says my profile is:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 27.58 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 43.3 Mbps-61.86 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 61.86 Mbps

and

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 13.51Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

The strange thing the speed never ever changes, no matter what time of day, always solid speed, good performance any time of day, it's just missing 15mb/s or so.

It's always 24 to 27, so it's definitely not connection, only ever had two disconnections, one was a reset by me and the second one was a power.

Is something jammed in the system, I don't want to raise a ticket just yet, as my speeds and performance have been rock solid.

Can anyone think as to why this might be going on??

Ruling out the router, have you tried a test hard-wired to the BT modem via PPPoE with any anti-virus software disabled.

Do try with that and if no improvement, please drop us a line.

So it is a BT Wholesale connection.

I agree with Matt on your next step, testing. It isn't normal to be consistently so far below the IP Profile.

As well as what he suggests, make sure nobody else is using the connection at the time you test. Is your wifi password protected as well?

Edit:-
So my sync speed is:

16,961 / 59,563
Not at the time you ran that BT Speed test it wasn't. It was more like 63,911 downstream.

I can't rule out the router as the engineer left with BT Openreach Modem

The router supplied is a TG589vn v3. He (a contractor not BT) didn't know how do wire in the modem to the router even after phoning his mate, we found the router has a modem in it, we put in the login details and it connected so that's my setup.

I'll run non-anti virus test in a couple of minutes and submit a ticket.

I'm only asking out of curiosity as speeds and connection are rock solid, just seems weird.

In the first instance, we need to sort that out - he should have left you with one regardless if you have equipment with a modem or not, please raise that as a separate issue.

If you can try a test directly to the router, via cable, with any background software disabled, that'll help rule out as much as possible without directly testing the modem (which you don't yet have).

Should that not show any improvement, please raise to us and we'll take it from there!

I doubt av software is an issue, generally when it is the effect on the speed test is not so random.

Some other Uno user tests
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html... - the shape of the tests is perfect in this case.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html... - here is a not so good one, notice the poor latency too suggesting something up with their connection.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html... - another good graph showing that even when connections are not hitting maximum possible speed due to distance you should not see a wobbly messy looking bandwidth chart

Huge sigh of relief, so I made a massive mistake and did the tests with cable plugged in but PC was still connected to WiFi.

Got full speed out of a wired connection, so I'm making up some extra long cables to run round the house.

Area is swamped with WiFi signals, particularly a bothersome HomeHub 5 drowning out my Technicolour.

I'm so happy it wasn't congestion, glad to be on a provider that really cares about it's members and customers, thanks to Matt, and RobertOS and Mr Saffron.

I just hope I get my 7mb/s sync back and the it would switch off the extra latency on my line, that's from one reset and accidental power cut, cheers.

Been there. Done that.

I did it a few times, but forgot about it. The machine I now use for speed testing does switch over automatically after a few minutes, but earlier ones didn't. My latest doesn't even have an Ethernet socket - I never even thought of that possibility when I ordered it!

I hope you mean 7MB/s tongue. The Openreach DLM does relent after a while, though it can be a few weeks.

Some weeks ago you told me I could make the same arrangement ie. FTTC and phone. Today I spoke to sales who sounded disinterested and annoyed to have to answer the phone, and was told that your line rental is NOT a live product and I can't move to it.

Sorry if you thought that was the case.

I've pulled up the call and I believe it was asking for the yearly package which they advised correctly wasn't yet possible and was coming soon.

You can pre-register your interest for the line rental overall and we will email you once live.

However, existing customers can move over to the standard monthly line rental via their portal but it is only for customers with existing services and not something we're advertising (to avoid confusion). The call was on the basis of a new customer which the information give was correct in that situation.

If I move the FTTC, then once I have an account , the phone line to monthly payment , will it be possible to later change to the annual plan when it becomes available?

At the moment there is some work to be done with the yearly option (mainly how calls will be billed given that it does not have a monthly invoice to tie them to as is done with monthly rental) so it would be wrong to comment either way.

Ooh, googling for me now; digging up five year old messages about running Linux on a Dell laptop. Must be bored and idle!

Don't suppose you've read Tanenbaum's book Operating Systems Design and Implementation? It's perhaps the seminal work on the topic.

Exactly what qualifications do you hold in this field? Andy Tanenbaum, the man you ridicule, is professor emeritus of computer science at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. He developed Minix as a teaching tool; it was adopted worldwide and became the precursor to Linux. When Tanenbaum calls foul on Microsoft and its activities, people do actually listen. On the other hand, who listens to you?

What contributions have you made to society, Adrian? Other than trolling internet forums, with your loony-rants, rubbishing every company you ever deal with? In recent weeks, on ThinkBroadband alone, you've smeared BT, TalkTalk, SSE, Zen, and today Uno. Which company will feel your wrath tomorrow?!

In reply to a post by edwincluck:
What contributions have you made to society, Adrian? Other than trolling internet forums, with your loony-rants, rubbishing every company you ever deal with? In recent weeks, on ThinkBroadband alone, you've smeared BT, TalkTalk, SSE, Zen, and today Uno. Which company will feel your wrath tomorrow?!
That's odd. He expressed himself happy with Matt's explanation and signed up to uno two days ago. He hasn't mentioned them since then.

What was very noticeable was that of your eight posts to Fri 27-Nov-15 19:04:28, starting at Thu 26-Nov-15 03:14:50, six have directly attacked AdrianPH without provocation, and a seventh does the same towards the end when addressing someone else. Now this one that I'm replying to out of wondering why you are stalking the guy with offensive comments.

I'm sure anyone looking at your posting history will rapidly make their own judgement between you and Adrian.

The indispensable man or woman passes from the scene, and what happens next is more or less the same thing as was happening before.

I wouldn't bother with him , the guy isn't worth the time.

I haven't written or complained about BT , I don't use them, nor Talk Talk or SSE, nor have I said a word about the service from Uno as until migration day it doesn't exist.

I know full well what level of service I will get from Matt and his team, I have sent many customers his way.
I was with Xilo for a long time and my relationship with them has always been good, so much so Matt made me moderator on the Xilo forum. The only reason I left was to get a service they couldn't at the time provide. Now they can provide what I require I am glad I can go back, albeit under a different company name.

The forums exist by people being able to have debates and with the expectation of no personal attacks, in this case you have over stepped the mark and thus it has been dealt with.

The author of the above post is a thinkbroadband staff member. It may not constitute an official statement on behalf of thinkbroadband.
