Migrate now or wait for LLU?

I'm considering migrating to Sky from BT BB soon.

Sky haven't unbundled the Canterbury exchange yet but it must be planned before August as I can get Sky Connect for �5 instead of the older price of �17.

With regards to migrating to Sky, would I better off waiting for Sky to actually unbundle the exchange and then migrate OR do I migrate now (and switch from fixed DSL to BT MAX) and then wait to be moved over onto LLU as and when Sky unbundle the exchange??

I am never going to be able to get either 8mb or 16mb packages as I'm just too far from the exchange. Question really is if I would be better off on Sky's LLU equipment instead of BT MAX on a long line (60db).

Some people with long (60+db) lines find LLU (bulldog/be/sky) better than BTwholesale connections, and others find it worse with constant disconnections.

Its very hard to predict, but if you did get the disconnections you could swap the sky router for a speedtouch and use DMT to tweak. (I think DMT might work with the sky router now?).

It does, but it doesn't display the bit loading values for some reason.

From what I gather Connect it's a pretty poor service; heavily managed and certainly throttled but there again, I suspect BT is also - probably got nothing to lose by changing but ensure your aim is to get onto LLU otherwise you may get up with a very poor product and become another unhappy Sky customer.

If it's any help... I was always on the outer reaches for getting the old 1 meg BB, it was only a few months before I switched that I was told I could get 2 meg.

On sky mid I'm getting between 6 - 6.5 meg.

I used to be with plusnet and have recently moved to sky (according to them my line *should* be active on 16th March). With plusnet I was on LLU (and managed to get a whopping 1.5 megs if I was lucky- but this was due to the length of my line)

so will I automatically be on LLU with sky??

Yes, I think but apparently you have to wait until Sky confirm officially, on the phone or via letter and make the offer - I believe they are stating capacity issues at the exchanges for this approach!

Sky User seems to cover these issues quite often.

I've had a pretty stable 1mb connection with BT BB for ages.

I actually use a Speedtouch 780wl at the moment (recently flashed to 6.2.G firmware so no DMT) but never really needed DMT as I'm on a fixed speed service. I've a brand new 780wl that's still on 6.1 firmware so I can definately test out DMT as and when I get a variable speed service.

Stats from my Speedtouch right now (off the top of my head as I am at work) are:

60/61db Downstream Att -- 31.5db Upstream Att
Downstream SNR ~21db (on re-sync) to avg. ~15db -- Upstream ~20db no change

I'm getting about ~2200 CRC's on Downstream per 24 hour period with little or no errored seconds. Upstream is pretty much error free.

Can't say I've noticed much "managed" or "throttled" speeds on my connection as I'm only on 1mb so max is only ever going to be 120k down. I've only recently noticed that BitTorrent never quite goes above 60k down before 12pm in the evening so maybe this is being throttled but it doesn't bother me that much as I only ever use BT moderately.

I guess the real question is just what are the differences between BT MAX and Sky's LLU variable DSL technologies.

I don't quite understand how you've gone from being on the limits of 1mb on BT Wholesale to 6mb with Sky.

I know from my Speedtouch's stats that my line may only ever obtain approximately 3.2mb downstream sync. My dowstream att is 60/61db with an avg. SNR of ~15db with my fixed 1mb speed right now.

Only thing that I can think of that might have got you 6mb on Sky is that your line is actually shorter than you thought and it was repaired/replaced at sometime enabling higher speeds.
