Connection Problems Since Friday...

[link to this post]

I'm on Sky Max, usually only get about 3.5mb out of the 16 so it's not a great line at all.

Friday night I got home from work to find the net dead, checked the router and it had no ext ip listed and the status was going between connecting and negotiating and getting no further. Rebooting the router and leaving unplugged for 30 mins made no difference.

Left it off overnight and tried in the morning an dit came back on fine and connected. That evening came home again to find it dead. Tried the same as the night before and also tried my other router which was just the same with no line connection.

Sunday was still not online, unplugged it all again left for an hour plugged in and still nothing so rang sky support. Explained it all to the girl on the phone and then as if by magic it connected. She checked and said there were no problems locally listed and to call back if I have problems again. 4 hours later I spend another hour trying to get it back online as it was again dead, finally got it online and it stayed connected for 10 mins and died.

So, any suggestions of what may be wrong or what to try next. I'm not looking forward to ringing sky again as I have no confidence in them especially after the girl in the afternoon asked me to "try typing in www.google.com in your browser to see what the error is please" when my precceding statement was "I have no external IP listed on the router config page and I have no line sync speed listed"....

Normally have quite a good stable line, the only usual problem is that the line may drop a couple of time and then reconnect in like 10 seconds between 10pm and midnight which is annoying. Any suggesttion why it does that would also be appreciated.

Have you gone through the usual test routine of disconnecting all phones and trying connection at the master socket?

That was something I was thinking of trying tonight. The router adsl cable goes from the router directly into a filtered faceplate on the main, and only, bt socket in the house. I'll try a normal filter on the test socket and see if anything is different tonight.

Right, tried the inside test socket with a brand new filter and adsl cable and still the same problem on both routers. Made sure this was the only thing plugged in, all home phones were not connected now.

Strange thing I have found it that it will sit there for 30 - 60 mins and just go between negotiating / connecting and get no further, but as soon as I pick my phone up and make a call it will very soon after say connected and then come online.

Tested that theory a couple of times and it always connects about a minute after making a call after being dead previously.

Any help?

I've had that happen with my last ISP, in my case it was caused by a line fault and the extra current from using the phone would temporarily clean the corrosion off a joint that had been affected by water ingress.

So after about and hour on the phone with Sky I think it's fixed. Was passed through to 3rd level who have now capped my line at 4mb and that should do it they say. Nothing to do with an actual fault on the line somewhere, just that my line can't cope with much in the way of sync speed.

We'll see how it goes.
