Ive got BT as my phone provider and with xilo 75gb pro for internet.
they have been brilliant internet wise but BT is a major issue now.
ive been smacked with a whopper of a phone bill and the extra charges added on (because I pay with paper) and the 0870 numbers have just gone nuts.
Do you think if I bundle together I could expect about the same type of broadband im currently getting?/the broadband service is one of the best ive had since Ukonline but at this rate I wont be able to afford the phone If I dont do something about it.
|
|
|
We can do a bundled service, including phone rental but you'll still have calls to pay for.
Do you have a mobile you can make any inclusive calls through?
Matt
|
|
|
I take it you don't have a calling plan with bt then, there are a few others around as well as bt that give you inclusive calls to 0845 & 0870 numbers

I checked the BT website im going to phone them tomorrow.
they have charged me 51.50 for Advanced line rental.
Was on Evening and weekend calling plan but was a daft choice as most of the calls I make to london (are daytime for the hospitals there).
the 0870 numbers really came to the front this time because of the paypal problem I had was living on those numbers to lloyds TSB.I didnt realise they could mount up so fast.

tbh thats one of the curses living in such a nice area.the mobile phones are so hit and miss. Its one of the problems people in site faced a few weeks ago when Sky talk went down.

Hi,
I have a similar problem to you with BT line rental - but unfortunately l live in an area that doesn't have LLU. I use an IP telephone that pugs into my router - much cheaper than using BT for calls. It's through Draytel.org and is a prepay thing. I rarely have to top it up(though that's probably because I don't make so many calls . But BT still caught me out as I hadn't made 6 charged calls a quarter I'd really like to ditch BT!
Xilo are the best ISP I've used.

So, for £4.70 pm with BT you can have all your up to 1 hour geog. & 0845/0870 calls free Anytime.
You should be paying £41.70 for quarterly line rental in advance.

Which mobile network?
If Vodafone, have a look at their "Sure Signal". Will use the broadband and will transmit a mobile signal in your house.
I have one as I live in a poor coverage area and the Sure Signal gives great coverage in the house (for up to 5 handsets).

Matt Up to 4 simultaneous calls can be made using Sure Signal.
The administrator can register up to 32 different Vodafone

That has changed since I bought mine... then again, they did change name from Vodafone Access Gateway (and lowered the price from £160 to £50).
Not that it really affects me as only have 2 on our box, but good to know.

worse call ever to BT.
I was put through to the other call centre she couldnt understand my accent and vice versa.they then tried to tell me switching my broadband to them would mean a better deal (the only problem with that BT's broadband was terrible here) we dont even have 21cn atm.they say the line speed will be 4mb but it was 1.5mb when I went with them.
about the error on the bill she said it would be credited back within 12 working days.
at the moment im paying just over 26 pounds for my broadband. with talk talk im going to get Broadband and calls for 19.70 for sixmonths then 27 pounds after.I know its a huge risk and im guessing the broadband wont be as good at the moment but money really is an issue.
not sure how this is going to work now they said im due to switch service with them in 19 days time.cant fault Xilo for service in both CS and speed its 100% down to cutting costs. As for BT my head is still spinning after trying to sort out what clearly was an error. Will be glad to see the back of them.

I've had a Go live date of the 13th of July from talk talk.
It does seem very weird not having a MAC code etc.
it has been the right move though for Cost reasons nearly all the calls im currently getting charged for Via BT (like the hospital numbers in london) will be free under the new package.
but to be honest im under no illusion im going to be getting what I pay for.

As long as you don't dabble in P2P, you'll be impressed by TalkTalk's LLU broadband service. Great pings, can be put on fastpath if necessary and line speeds 24/7. For support, just visit TalkTalk forums. Give them a chance, you might be pleasantly surprised
|
|
|
Ive fallen back in love with World of Warcraft since the latest patch!! they finally sorted out the issues that made me almost quit .
tbh the ping is a big issue for me.
at the moment im on a 15db profile.but its set to fastpath.when I was with Ukonline they got it upto 4.5mb.since ive been with Xilo its 6.5mb and download speed over 720KB.
ping is about 39 on Outland server and 45 on Twilights hammer.

thank you for the forum link,
im just waiting for the service to be changed over.
I had the router in the post yesterday its so much smaller than my current one.
I know Xilo Got me on fast path and that helped my pings no end of late in WOW its been as low as 39.

If TalkTalk send you a Huawei router, don't bother with it as its a pile of junk (will lose connection regularly even on a perfect line) instead use your own router. If on the other hand they send you a Dlink 2640, that's definitely worth using. Do let us know how you get on!

Its the huwai router...
this hasnt started well to be honest.
found out Talktalk did a cease and reprovide meaning ive been stupmed with a 30 pound charge from Xilo.Phoned talktalk and the first lady I spoke with said I shouldnt even be 'live' with them till next week!!!
I rerung back and got more sense from another lady and she said they would credit me back the 30 quid.
I was also without phone service for nearly 2 hours which was a worry (mobiles dont work down here).ADSL is up and running but can see a post on that forum whem it allows me.
Im off Fastpath back on interleaved.
my profile needs to be fixed at 6.5mb
15db
fastpath
Ive found these settings the most stable with both Ukonline and Xilo.
this is what the router is currently giving me,
Upstream line rate (kbit/s) 812
Downstream line rate (kbit/s) 6295
Line standard ADSL2+
Channel type Interleaved
Upstream SNR (dB) 11.4
Downstream SNR (dB) 11.1
Upstream interleave depth 2
Downstream interleave depth 64
Upstream line attenuation (dB) 29.1
Downstream line attenuation (dB) 53
Upstream output power (dBmV) 12.5
Downstream output power (dBmV) 0
Upstream CRC 0
Downstream CRC 65504
Upstream FEC 609
Downstream FEC 65522

Aw thats brilliant.
thank you.
for some reason its not letting me register on the forum saying my telephone number is inactive.but service and ADSL is on.
I phoned tech suport to try and get the changes sorted and basically they told me not going to happen before the 14 day training period.
I think this might be the problem with talktalk they tell you things that clearly wont happen when you join them hence the negative feedback.
im hoping once I can register on the forum I can get more sense there about getting the tweaks needed.I was using the MurphX network for 10 monts.

Fill out this form mentioning you're having problems registering on the TalkTalk forms and you should have access within 48 hours: (i also had the same problem)
https://help.talktalk.co.uk/app/ask
Having said all this, if you call up TalkTalk broadband support, ask them politely to put you through to 2nd line support....1st line support are dumb monkeys who will think you're talking gibberish if you mention terms like interleaving, fastpath etc Then ask 2nd line support to turn on/off interleaving and lower/increase your downstream SNR. On the day my connection went live, only 3 hours later i called up second line support and they put me on a 6db fastpath profile...none of this 14 day bullsshit waiting period
2nd line broadband support: 0870 087 8046 or 020 8896 5000

I think the big guy upstairs is telling me leave the ADSL well alone..
I phoned the number and againg automated service didnt take the phone number.
Line 1 refused point blank to put me through saying they would talk to line 2.
16 mins later he came back on the phone and said 'sorry you wait the 14 days'.
Whats troubled me about all this because the issues I had with both Ukonline and Xilo (both ISP's) made sure they got me the best speed and more important stable service. they passed on the things they had done to make sure that happened.
Talktalk assured me there wouldnt be a problem getting these tweaks sorted when the service went live..
Matt at Xilo did the 15db and tier 3 at Ukonline run the tests and informed me capping my line at 6.5mb was maxing it out and would make sure the Dc's stopped.
but thank you for taking the time to try and help out.
*just checked my talktalk account the phone number is now showing as active so tried to phone the 0870 number for line 2 and it just takes you into the options and back to line 1 so looks like something has changed.

In that case, its best to post on the TalkTalk forums and get them to make the required changes. Believe me, they will do what you tell them to do

Aye I think thats the best idea ive got in touch with them to say i cant register on the forum so hoping to get that sorted.
thank you so much for all the advice.

I did finally get on the talktalk forums.
Really stunned the 15DB option and Fast path are now in place they have put me on the 8mb profile (LLU) I know my line will only takeupto 6,5mb max after that is just builds up so many errors it loses sync etc.
But stunned the 15db option with them has basically cut my speed in half to what it was with Xilo.
when im using the connection alone that wont be an issue but with Xbox and laptop on there also I cant see this working.I know the first 2 weeks I joined Xilo trying to get the connection right was a nightmare.Ironic thing is when they switched me over yesterday I was on 7.1mb Fastpath and it was running 100% fine.!! LOL blooming typical..
Am I right thinking if you are on fast path DLM then isnt an issue?
|
|
|
|
Did you request to be put on a 15db fastpath profile? Because talktalk's default is 12db interleaved. If you don't have any problems on 15db margin then gradually ask talktalk to reduce your snr until you get the right balance of speed v stability. Alternatively you could use a router such as Billion 7700N or 7800N which would allow you to alter the SNR to your own liking. The DLM is still working by default even on a fastpath profile. You'd have to ask one of the talktalk OCEs to get DLM switched off on your line.
|
|
|
|
aye apparently the first attempt failed.
15DB saw the service cut in half so they have tried me on 12db (fastpath)
im basically back to my Ukonline speed.5.4 mb.
the ping in wow has settled a lot now you were so right about that forum it takes out all the stress of having to try and explain over the phone.
If the service stays at this level it will be great.
It was really weird because with xilo on the 15db profile i still managed to get 6.5 mb with talk talk on 15db it was cut in half
|
|
|
Which router are you currently using? If you're not already using it, i'd say try a BT Business Hub 2700HGV. These are arguably the best routers to use on long lines such as yours, as they can tolerate very low noise margins. If this was to work well, you could ask TalkTalk to drop your noise margin to 6db and get an even higher sync! These routers can be picked up for £5-£15 on ebay:

You have taken the same rout as me , going from the excellent UKonline to a resold LLU product , mine was through murphX through Vivaciti . to TalkTalk .
Im also a online gamer and could not be more happy with my TalkTalk connection , pings have been stable connection has been solid and im saving my self allot of money a month .
You also got stung the £30 cease charge , i also got stung 45 days service charges as well but im still going to make a saving as i cried like a baby to TalkTalk about this and the fact they say nothing about this charge whilst joining .
Anyway i got a £30 credit on my TalkTalk account for my efforts which was better than i hoped for as it does say im responsible for charges from my previous supplier .
just a note , i did lose some of my sync speed with TalkTalk but stability has always been more important as im a gamer .

Hi im using the Linxsys wag
its blooming Ancient to be honest.
I do have to be fair the talk talk forum are really good in terms of trying to sort things out.Ive made matters 100% worse by thinking the tweaks that worked with Previous ISP's like UKO and Xilo would have the same effect.
im roughly down to 4mb now.was on 6,5 mb with Xilo.
they have finally disabled DLM.which will help me no end when the powercuts kick in and DLM thinks its an unstable ADSL when its the powercuts.
also have a swine of a problem with Filesonic its only a 56mb File but it keeps saying im either downloading or just downloaded and ive not even had the file.

lol.
Yep they said the same to me but turns out the 30 pound refund hasnt happened.
Ive been trying to explain on the talk talk CS forum.when someone tells you on the phone 'we will be in touch with the ISP about a mac code,so you dont get charged'
then you DO get charged you have to tell them about it.
fairplay to Tom @ xilo he warned me this was going to happen Talktalk do Cease and reprovide instead of getting a mac code that cancels out any charges.
So this woman Called Emma on the forum basically said Its my fault I didnt read the T&C's of the contract and thats what cooling off periods are for.But I then told her I rung talktalk to ask a lot of Questions (like I did before joining Xilo) to try and make an informed Choice.
Im very impresssed with the staff who post on the members forum I think its the sales staff letting talktalk down because quite clearly they are saying things they dont have a clue about.
yep same here I was on that network with Xilo very impressed with it.

Hi im using the Linxsys wag
its blooming Ancient to be honest.
In that case i strongly recommend getting the BT 2700HGV router (costs about the same as portion of fish and chips), you might be surprised at what it can do!
also have a swine of a problem with Filesonic its only a 56mb File but it keeps saying im either downloading or just downloaded and ive not even had the file.
TalkTalk, like many other ISPs, is subscribed to Internet watch Foundation so some filesharing sites don't work properly. Easy way to solve this:

One thing to bear in mind is that EVERY call you make to Talktalk is recorded so if someone in sales/support makes false promises, then one of the OCEs on the forums can review that call and if necessary, implement what was said to you.
For example in my case when i signed up over the phone in Sept 2010 i was told i could have their Plus package for half price for 6 months...however they started to charge me full price but after posting on the forums, the brilliant OCE Emma went through my sales call and applied a credit to my account for £7.49 pm for 6 months. TalkTalk sales also assured me that i could have a static IP address after going live which i knew to be total bull as Talktalk have stopped assigning static ip addresses. A few weeks later, i queried this on the forums, Steven OCE then assigned me a static IP address
(BTW, a static ip address gives you a FULLY unthrottled connection though i don't use p2p)
|
|
|
|
LOL!!! Its that Emma I was dealing with today.
Im on the plus package.and thinking of getting a Static IP if possible.theres something really weird going back to Dynamic IP address.
WOW!! I didnt realise they record all calls!! thats brilliant because the lady I spoke to not only promised me if things dont work out I can leave (within the 30 days np) she was going to get line 2 to phone me tomorrow and try and get the service upto 6.5mb).
that would be ideal I know living down here I will never get over that speed.
touchwood tonight had no Dc's or anything and line stats are looking very decent.By this time of night the downstream SNR would be in single figures not moved of 10.

Give it a week and if still no disconnections, then put a request on TalkTalk forums to have to have your profile changed to 8FSNR6 (6db Fastpath profile, capped at 8 meg) to increase your sync speed nearer the 8 meg mark. Did you get a chance to buy that portion of fish and chips...errr i mean the BT 2700HGV router?

So far so Good.
Had the 1st power cut tonight (35 mins) and connection came back in at 5.5mb.
But until then had been connected 4 days straight.
ping in wow isnt as good as xilo Id say more on the lines of Ukonline.
I dont know how the heck it was so low with xilo there were some nights it was 29!!!! lol.
the poor PC is currently dying in Firelands. charming framerate of 17!!! *shudders*

lol oh yes.
Gets so bad down here come the winter theres an Onsite Generator..not the best place to build some houses that 100% rely on power to even run a bath!! LOL.
its going good so far with me.
what ive noticed more than anything is my Downstream SNR
all the other ISP's it would drop to 2-3 most nights with talk talk it remains around the 8.5-10 most nights.Ive not asked for any tweaks to the line it seems to be running good @ 5.5mb
