Re: Network Status Updates

[re: 4M2] [link to this post]

Opal by their old name, Talk Talk Business by their new name.

This issue only seems to occur when there is a break between two locations and it seems that they'll reroute traffic leaving some service than none at all.

The pattern though is far too consistent: Base latency seems to stick around 120ms and it can randomly affect lines all over. Sometimes even lines on the same exchange see different results. Two lines on the same exchange, one will see the problem the other wont.

I didn't have the increase in latency yesterday but did notice a drop in session. At the same time, other lines had an immediate increase in latency.

This only used to occur on the Opal network on the original "Talk Talk" exchanges. Since they merged the ex-Tiscali exchanges on to the same backhaul network, those locations do see the same problem too.

We're monitoring all the lines we can on that service, as well as a number of Talk Talk customers who have let us ping their router and other partner networks using the TTB wholesale product.

We don't see it occur too regularly which is part of the problem in a swift diagnosis as by the time it was escalated from TTB SMC to their NOC, the issue had stopped. This has now been raised higher within TTB so hopefully it will address why it seems to affect the network so much.

The flip side is that customers still have some internet connectivity even if a little laggy or slow instead of a complete outage but it seems that many would prefer a complete outage to know that it is an actual fault opposed to just a "slow down".

Thanks for that full and detailed information Matt smile

So, I guess, any end users of the TTB wholesale product (SMPF or MPF) will continue to have potential and actual issues with their lines until the problem is eventually addressed by the higher echelons of TTB.

I know my cousin who uses TT LLU had a considerable slow down last Wednesday evening for a hour or so - his fix was to simply reboot the router and his normal speed retuned. Whether or not his problem was related to network issues we just don't know but it did stop him from watching even 360p SD YouTube videos for a while because they were extremely slow to buffer.

It is probable that the new connection was routed different within their network. This is likely to be similar to how one connection on the exchange can be affected and another will work fine.

or the noise margin had plummeted and a resyc gave less errors.

TalkTalk kit tends to hang on until the errors eat into the available bandwidth, so before a reboot always take a peek at the stats

Same problems here in North Bedfordshire. Last night the lowest pings I was getting were around 300, the internet was pretty much un-usable.

Today pings are normal but my download is the same as my upload speed (0.36). I'm with Pipex and spoke to their support, they said they think around 40-50 BT exchanges across the UK are down. But I don't see how if this is only affecting talktalk. They were otherwise pretty clueless as to what is going on. They just told me to monitor it for a day and get back to them :/

Hi All,

TT suffered a fibre cable break on Friday. As part of restoration work to re-establish the link traffic was temporarily re-routed, causing some congestion in southern areas.

The Fibre link has now been restored and customers ho reported this issue on friday were seeing speed issues resolved on Saturday. If there has been any continuation of speed issues following this we can look at these as individual issues for any TalkTalk Customer. Any customers of TT resellers would need to raise the issue to their ISP directly.
