What sort of modem or router are you using, and how long is it connected (how many hours/day) ?

Sorry for all the questions............. with a 63dB attenuation figure, you're never going to get great speeds, but the noise margin for your line suggests that you should be able to go a little higher.

No worries about all the questions. I do not understand any of the terms so any help is much appreciated so that I can have a word with my isp. Its a Voyager 2110 modem, and I was keeping the modem switched on 24 hour a day. Ive switched it off and on again since having the problems as I tried to connect it to the master socket.
Just weird that the speed was 1.5 consistently then 1 consistently and now in the last 2 weeks has halved. Thanks for your help its much appreciated.

Line Rate 1120 Kbps 448 Kbps

this is 32k below that required for a 1M service, so a resync may get 1M back after 3 days providing it'll hold 1152 or more downstream.

You're just short of a 2 Mbit profile now. The glaring difference is the downstream attenuation which has dropped dramatically. Are you plugged into the master socket now? If so and you weren't at the time of the first report, your extension wiring is the likely culprit.

3 days(ish) on your current synch should get you back your 1.5 Mbit profile.

The severe drop in downstream attenuation is very likely to be a router bug.

Like mooch said, you're only just short of being on a 2mb profile, you just need to sync a tiny bit higher, 2272. However, if your router holds sync at your current speed, you should soon be on a 1.5mb profile.

If the attenuation goes from 63dB to 15dB you have a big problem somewhere. It could be in the line iteself, faulty house phone wiring, or the modem itself.

I bet the 15db attenuation is wrong also, the 30 odd dB upstream would seem to equate to the kind of speeds he was seeing. I would have thought it's his router which is at fault.

Yep, a few routers tend to show 15.5dB sometimes, a reboot will clear it.

That does sound plausible. Normally the DS attenuation is about double the upstream.

I have just gone onto www.speedtester.bt.com and got the following results:-

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 2176 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 458 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

My router is presnetly showing:-

Line Mode G.DMT Line State Show Time
Latency Type Interleave Line Up Time 00:07:36:14
Line Coding Trellis On Line Up Count 1

Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 2176 Kbps 448 Kbps
Noise Margin 11.6 dB 17.0 dB
Line Attenuation 15.5 dB 31.5 dB
Output Power 17.5 dBm 12.3 dBm
K (number of bytes in DMT frame) 69 15
R (number of check bytes in RS code word) 16 16
S (RS code word size in DMT frame) 2 8
D (interleaver depth) 16 4

RS Uncorrectable Errors 105 0

ADSL BER Test - Result

The ADSL BER test completed successfully.

Tested Time 20
Total Transferred Bits 39414528
Total Error Bits 0
Error Ratio 0.00e+00

Does that help explain anything. REally sorry for all the niave questions but i haven't a clue with all this. Just know my speed has dropeed from nearly 2 down to 0.5 in the last month.

IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 2176 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)

you now have to wait and see if you can keep the sync speed over 1800 in which case the IP Profile will rise to 1.5M in ~3 days. Its nearly at 2M, but not quite.

The BER test shows no errors, which is good.

Interference and/or wiring at your end led to a sync speed below 1152 hence the 512k profile.
