I have just contacted Jurassic and they tell me that the router they will install is the Nokia G-240W-J, and the agent I spoke to said they gurantee to provide full wifi coverage in the property upon install, and if the engineers installing the service feel the wifi coverage is lacking will provide 'boosters' for free. I await installation in August.

The ONLY way they can 100% guarantee that is by running Ethernet backhaul for any additional points. That seems unlikely to me, and even if they did it's going to be cable clipped around the skirting which is not something I would be happy with.

You can do the backhaul using different WiFi channels often 5GHz but it is subject to all the issues of WiFi being shared with anyone in the vicinity and not only with WiFi but other stuff too, which is why the recommendation for additional access points is Ethernet backhaul.

To be fair I think Plusnet gave you full WiFi coverage, just not at full speed. I myself use virgin and have a wireless mesh (all the walls are brick so not easy to run new cables) I get full coverage but not at full speed.

I expect Jurassic may basically say you can see the network in all rooms, and it worked when we tested it. I doubt they'll guarantee full speed in all rooms all of the time

The wording on speeds from their T&Cs state:

5.5 We cannot guarantee fault-free performance. Due to the shared use of networks and factors outside our control such as access to 3rd party content and services, your internet access availability and speed may vary from time to time. In addition, the speed and limitations of Wi-Fi (your router position, wall thickness, device capability etc) may affect the actual speed that you experience. In larger homes or certain types of building, additional equipment may be required to ensure this bandwidth is available as a Wi-Fi signal throughout the home. This additional equipment can be supplied at a cost and may be recommended to you by your installation engineer. We are not responsible for any reduction in speed caused by your own devices or equipment, for example antivirus software causing slow speeds on a computer or phone. If you are consistently receiving slower speeds than your subscription allows, please contact our Customer Success Team through our app, by emailing [email protected], or calling us on 01392 345600.

Smoke and mirrors is something you should be used to if you are into high end audio 😀
Seriously I always apply this mantra…
If you can hardwire a component, you should hardwire it.
Wireless is always second best but admittedly often more convenient. That convenience comes at a cost however.

The NAIM streaming box the OP does have an Ethernet port on the back. As do other equivalent streaming boxes like those from Cambridge Audio (which was my birthday present last year).

Depending on what else is nearby, smart TV, games console etc. it could make more sense to put in place an inexpensive, slim 4 or 5 port switch like a Ubiquiti USW-Flex-Mini and run short flyleads to the gear and just a single Cat 5e cable back to the main router.

I totally agree, access points are the way to go, at least the way i went for these reasons, before you ask I now get a min of 350Mbps everywhere and over 750 in the same room as the AP's.

Solid advice. When we refurbished our house recently, I allowed for access points throughout.

Doubtless the best performance is clearly where the AP is in the same room (e.g. our office / study). In areas where I didn't think it appropriate to fit a ceiling AP within the room (mostly bedrooms) they are installed in the adjacent corridor ceiling but the performance tails off, still perfectly acceptable though (around 500 Mbps on 802.11ac 4x4). In room performance generally exceeds 800 Mbps from the AP.

It doesn't take much distance or plasterboard, furniture / obstruction to dent the performance of WiFi. That's before you consider interference.

Unfortunately this morning my main POE switch died and produced magic smoke.
It has been sent back to manufacture for a refund.

Any suggestions for a 2.5 gig POE switch with 10gig copper or SFP+. I can't find any that are in stock, its a real problem because right now my whole backhaul for every device on the upper floor is maxing out gigabit and the WiFi is not operational.

Many Thanks,

Maybe start a new thread in the Networking section for more visibility? Folks may know of stock

In general very hard to get stock of lots of stuff at the moment, been trying to get some NICs recently and none available until August at the earliest! Routers until July and on it goes.

[Whatever you don't try and order new car at the moment, especially any that have wiring looms manufactured in the Ukraine...theres a 12 month+ waiting list for many cars and vans with pre-owned selling for me than brand new! Welcome to the bonkers new world order...]

I know I am a Naim streaming preamp owner. Hardwired of course.

So are you using it then (the ethernet port)? 😎
