Re: Getting throttled without using connection

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

try downloading the hd film to the hard drive and then watch it later, you will get an idea to it's large size as well smile

What im watching is live, its wimbledon... i cant download it

And other people seem to have missunderstood me, i'm not an idiot, i know that watching an online stream uses up bandwidth... What i ment is that when I get home from work, when I havnt used to connection since the previous evening (18 hours ago) i'm running at neer 5meg down and 180kps up, which looks like throttled speeds to me

Then i try and watch Wimbledon what i'm home on comp but unable to do so in higher quality stream, bbc site says u need a connection speed of 1meg to watch the stream so i should be fine, however because i'm on virgin i have bad upload speeds when being throttled, perhaps the stream will need a greater upload speed, as more common with ADSL

any more suggestions after reading my posts properly will be appreiated,

thanks,

In reply to a post by krazykizza:
You must be going over the upload or download limit to be throttled.

Not strictly speaking true. Have a look through the threads on here and their have been instances where the STM has kicked in where it should not have.

tbbmeter will help keep an eye on the amount of data viewing videos tots up http://www.thinkbroadband.com/tbbmeter.html

Alternatively it may be something on the machine using bandwidth that you are not aware of e.g. an a P2P version of iPlayer

Windows updates are generally fairly small assuming you keep the machine up to date, at least in comparison to watching streamed video
