Cancelling my Virgin contract

[link to this post]

Hi, I recently got an email from Vergin Media telling me that they will soon change my land line over to digital and send me a connection adapter see below

We recently got in touch to let you know that your home phone will be switched to our fibre network on 25 January. We’ll send you an adapter in the post, so keep an eye out for it as you’ll need to connect your phone to your WiFi Hub to avoid any issues.
What you need to do
On 25 January, plug the adapter into Port 1 on the back of your Hub, then unplug your phone cable from the wall and plug it into the adapter. We’ll do the rest.

My question is does this constitute a change in my terms of contact and therefore allowing me to cancel my 18-month tied contract with them without a penalty payment. I'm currently paying £64 for a 1gb speed (never got 1gb most reads 965/975 mb on speed tests) so i would like to change to a cheaper provider as there are some good deals around at the moment. Many Thanks joego

In short. No. They are changing the means of service delivery, but the actual “service” (and presumably price) remains the same.

Hi, I thought that might be the case but thank you for replying so soon and clarifying the situation... so it looks like I will just have to sit it out for another 8 months left on the contract

Hi,

You will never hit 1Gbps on any service unless the provider supplies a device with at least a 2.5Gb port.
Virgin May be able to provide you the new Hub that has this, but your computer would also need a 2.5Gb adapter too.

Thanks

Sure. As regards to your net throughputs…
I'm currently paying £64 for a 1gb speed (never got 1gb most reads 965/975 mb on speed tests)

As Dan has pointed out, that is normal for a service via a 1 GbE Ethernet port - it is not possible to receive a net throughput of 1 Gbps over a 1GbE LAN port. Why - Ethernet framing overheads (and IP overhead) reduces the net throughout by around 8% give or take. So you’re never going to achieve the headline speeds unless both ends of the link are using a higher rate port 2.5, 5 or 10 GbE. That’s just life.

97% of your theoretical top speed seems very good!

Was Eclipse Home Option 1, VM 2Mb & O2 Standard
Utility Warehouse (up to 16mbps) via Talk Talk, upgraded to fibre 40/10

Nothing wrong with those speeds, but can understand the price concern.

Hi I just want to say thank you for all the replies and thoughts on my question, I appreciate all the advice and comments I found them very helpful and informative. My objectives in asking the question was during these austere times I am looking for savings as many of our monthly subscription and services just keep going up. Secondly do I really need 1Gig of speed? As has been pointed out there are many other factors the determine the actual usable speed ! Anyway it looks like I'm locked in until the contract end in July 2023 then I will have a review. Thank

Have you phoned up Virgin and spoken to them about it? You may be able to downgrade the service but stay committed to the initial contract term.
