I wouldn't say that AJAX is much extra work though, once you get the basics up and running which if you nab existing tutorial code off the net only takes a few minutes. The last company I worked for had a web application and they wanted something done that would've made pages incredibly large if handled traditionally. I got an AJAX solution working in 2.5 hours that made things much faster
Still, if the solution didn't suit AJAX, then no point wasting time on it.
