Line stat question

[link to this post]

Hi all...

Currently on a fixed 2Mb package from Orange but seriously looking at jumping to another ISP.

My line stats from my Livebox are as follows:-

Noise Margin - 30.0 db
Attenuation - 22.0db

Are these figures any good ??? Would they be OK if I move to an 8Mb ADSL Max package ??? What sort of speed roughly could I expect ???

Many thanks
Paul

LLU providers such as Sky and Be should give you the best download speeds, biggest caps or no caps at all - no throttling - and at the lowest cost. So it would be wise to actually check what ADSL services you can get first before parting with any cash.

Use the link I have put below and it will tell you exactly what ADSL services you can get by just putting in your post code or phone number (i.e. it may say "Sky LLU" or "Be LLU" - that means you can use Sky or Be and they are an LLU service).

Link to ADSL services checker.

Using ISPs such as Sky or Be will give you more bang for your bucks - plus someone like Sky will give you a "deal" of their TV channels - free phone calls - and your broadband connection from

Put your figures in here (2272 sync, 22 attenuation, 30 margin)

http://www2.farina1.com/ADSL/default.aspx

to get ADSL and ADSL2+ estimates.

Jump!

But where?

What sort of downloading and uploading? The more accurate the figures you can give the better.
Gaming - need high pings?
Most downloads 9am-10pm , or 10pm - 9am? When?
Budget - preferred, expected , absolute maximum?
Newsgroups?
Web space?

Re the above - what is your primary requirement of your internet connection?

Try putting your phone no. into www.samknows.com, see what LLU suppliers are available. Ignore Tiscali. Talk Talk are dodgy but improving. Tell us which are reported as available.

On the older "clunky" technology of IPStream you would get close to 8Mbps.

With an LLU provider and those stats you could get up to 21Mbps at the same or lower price than 8Mbps would cost you using IPStream providers.

Cheers all for the replies.

Already looked on Samknows site and there is no LLU's of any kind on my exchange and also no cable packages in my area so a Max package is about it for me.

I have been looking at ADSL24 as an ISP. Anybody have any comments on them ??

The main thing is I get a reliable connection as I use it a lot for VPN into work. The rest of the time is just normal browsing with a bit of P2P downloads.

All of the Entanet resellers (of which ADSL24 is one) have a good reputation, they all use the same underlying product.

Yup, providing you don't mind the odd speed reduction during busy times (sometimes down to around 2-3Mbps, but generally only between 10pm to midnight, and weekend afternoons - when a lot of mass-downloading takes place, and Entanet take measures to protect pings and packet loss, by reducing speeds), Entanet resellers provide the best high usage non-LLU product around.
A typical Entanet package would give 30GB peak (8am - 10pm weekdays), plus 300GB off-peak usage, for
