Interleaving

[link to this post]

Hi folks,

on Friday I spoke to a Zen technical support guy and requested that they turned the Interleaving on my line off. I recently replaced my router, which started dropping the connection and locking up repeatedly - this is what I believe caused interleaving to be turned on, as prior to this I'd always been on FastPath and syncing at 8128. Ordinarily, I wouldn't have a problem with interleaving (I know it adds the 'safety net' of error correction to the connection), but since it's been enabled I've noticed ping latency problems (with IRC, Internet Gaming etc.), which I'm told can sometimes arise when it's on.

Anyway, my modem (Linksys AM200) displays the DSL path, so I'm hoping it will tell me when it's changed (and interleaving is removed) but I'm just wondering whether I need to reboot my modem in order for it to see the change, or whether it should automatically pick it up? Any ideas?

Cheers,
Marc.

I believe you will have to restart your router. There should be no harm in trying every hour or so (restarting several times an hour can cause problems with the exchange end believing you have an unstable connection).

Thanks John - I'll restart it when I get home and see what it says.

Cheers,
Marc.

Its worth pointing out that even rebooting once an hour could easily be enough to make the exchange equipment increase the SNR on the line because it feels the line is struggling.

A single reboot when you get home though should be fine.

A reboot once an hour should not be enough, unless you also are suffering from lots of errors other wise on the line.

That was my concern though because the line has at least been intermittent or erroring enough for interleaving to be applied it could be wise to limit the amount of reboot's to only those that are nesisarry for now.

Its a hard call to make without seeing the actual line stats and history but I always like to err on the side of caution.

Thanks for the input folks. It turns out that it only required a single reboot when I got home yesterday in order for the modem to see that interleaving had been turned off. Incidentally, as I now have a two-tier system in operation (Linksys AM200 ADSL-Ethernet modem and a D-Link DIR-655 wireless-n router) I normally turn the router off at night (and while I'm at work), but leave the modem on. Prior to my restart yesterday the modem has been connected for 14 days without a drop, so hopefully the problem is sorted.

Cheers,
Marc.
