New plusnet broadband installed today. I can't connect to the Internet. The red light is showing on the new router and I get the error authentication failed.
Any help much appreciated!!!

I do not think that PlusNet activate your account until the end of the day that you have the installation completed. Call support on 0800 432 0200 or 0345 140 0200 and ask them to activate your account.
Edit: corrected the second number as I had duplicated the other one.

They do activate it earlier, but I think they wait for the notification from Openreach that the migration is complete.
(By the way, I think you intended one of those numbers to be 0345 140 0200).

Thanks.
I have already called them, held for 30 mins, eventually through only to be told that they would only speak to hubby, who's not here! (He has twice put my name on the account but they seem not to have activated that either!)
Now left in limbo!

Hi, thanks, yes I did but must confess I don't really understand. Where should I put this in? And I only have a @dsl2. net
All help is appreciated,
|
|
|
That's one of our old Metronet usernames I think!
You'll need to log in to the router, instructions should be in the booklet you got with the router.
Change the connection username to username@plusdsl.net

Is there still a red light showing on the router or is it now green?

I don't know what colour the light is. I have had to go out after 10 hours of trying! Will be home later and report back.

Can you find a credit card sized white plastic card headed "Your router setup details"? It came with the router and instruction leaflet.
In your browser, type 192.168.1.254
That will ask you to log into the router. Username is admin, and the password is near the bottom of that card.
I don't remember the rest as I'm not using mine, but others have posted links to how to get to the internet username page.

Hi Roberto's, I have done that step already. That page still showed an error with the internet connection.
|
|
|
So you have the username that you log into the PlusNet Member Centre with, say it is xxxx. Then the username to put into the connection field is [email protected] and the password is the same as your Member Centre login?
You are using upper and lower case correctly, and not confusing zero with the letter O?

RobertoS,
Firstly on opening safari I get a page that shows that the red light is on, and that I have an authentication error. I have put in the 192.168.1.254 into the address bar. It brings up a page that is plusnet technicolor tg582n. This also shows the PPPoE Internet connection to have an AuthFailure. I have no idea what on earth to do next. I really don't know how to find the page to log into Plusnet member centre. I am having to use the 3G on my phone, so please excuse the brief typing manner!

Apprentice, the light has now gone off! Not red or green! Is that a good thing?
|
|
|
Thank you all for your help. It was so simple.
Plusnet gave me the Username of [email protected]. In fact they gave me this twice!
It should be [email protected] (i.e. with plus, without 2!!)
Problem sorted and can now give my phones 3G a rest!
You have all been so kind, thanks!
|
|
|

That is what Bob told you, twice, but I guess I don't blame you for believing Plusnet rather than him.
Edit: just noticed that Chris from Plusnet told you this as well on this thread.

Yes, I know they did, but the router was not working / had not been connected, then I wasn't able to find where to put the username and password. I am aware that I am completely new and rubbish att this, but in my defence it is incredibly awful trying to sort it out via a 3G phone!
Thanks for your help and patience all!

Hi,
Where did we give you this? Over the phone? Or in some documentation?
|
|
|
Why do companies insist on only talking to the account holder. If the call is about payment or personal details then fair enough but when it's about lack of connectivity or similar then surely there is no data protection issue (if that is the worry)?

KellyD,
They gave this over the phone at least twice. But Plusnet did email me yesterday the correct details, whilst I was on the phone to them trying to get them to talk to me, whilst I had no internetand therefore no email!
Never mind, glad its all sorted.
We have actually been with Plusnet for man-years, since they were Metronet, based in Harrow. Alway been very pleased with the service. (although I find it a shame that it seems to be slipping, now that it plays with the big companies!)
What a useful, helpful and friendly bunch you are. Very refreshing!

We have actually been with Plusnet for man-years, since they were Metronet Then your BB username could well still be a Metronet @dsl2.net one. I'm on EE (Orange) for years and my login and email username is still a Freeserve one. Many ISPs retain predecessor usernames as they take over companies.
1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU => 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC

Except that we have already established that it isn't! But it could well have been this that caused the confusion with Plusnet.

Exactly! It isn't now but was a Metronet @dsl2.net one before the new PN package was installed but PN failed to tell OP that they changed it with the new package.
@OP: Were you switching from PN ADSL BB to PN Fibre BB?

I'm only guessing, but I had a similar problem when I tried to return the PN.
Before attempting to return, I had an old "aihpipe" connection - unfortunately, because the PN Rep didn't know about these old connections, he hadn't configured everything correctly so that some of their systems were expecting to old setup whilst others were configured to the new!!
Needless to say, nothing worked!

I'm in 100% agreement with you on this!!
PN seem to have a lot of oddball connection names (leftover from the combining/amalgamation of previous systems) & not all of their Call-Centre reps are fully aware of it!
Certainly you got some very good advice here, but not necessarily presented to you in a way that made immediate sense to you!
Never mind, the important thing is you got there!
Please do not be daunted by the experience & please feel free to drop by again, whether it is to resolve a query or simply to chat!

I'm only guessing, but I had a similar problem when I tried to return the PN. We don't know OP was returning to PN from elsewhere. He said 'We have actually been with Plusnet for man-years, since they were Metronet' which I took to mean he was changing BB within PN, probably to Fibre. Hence my Q.

Probably a "she". The OP refers to "hubby". The hand-writing looks feminine as well.

"He" also said " man-years" .

Ah, not that easy my friend!
Note that is with a "we", and the person whose name is the primary entry on the account is hubby's. I think we can assume that hubby is male. As that is the primary name on the account and also was on the Metronet account, (hmmm - "Metro" could have implications), the man-years would be identical in usage to chairman, manpower, manhandle and many other compound words using "man".
Your turn .

Me?
Well in my early twenties I had a very close-fitting knitted black woollen trouser-suit. Wore it once to a wedding reception. One of my (much older) brothers prompted his 8-year old daughter to tell me how much she liked my dress. LOL. "My wife and I" creased ourselves .
