Initial Speed check when ordering Broadband. HELP!

[link to this post]

Hi,

When I entered my phone number on BT's website when ordering Broadband (option 3), I am told that I can get a maximum potential broadband connection speed of around 0.5 Mbps.

I get the same potential broadband connection speed at www.broadbandchecker.co.uk and at the BT wholesale website.

Not sure what is going on. When I tried this a couple of weeks ago it was 5.5Mbps.

I was with Virgin Media, but recently cancelled my broadband with them because I was constantly getting Error 691 : Invalid Username/Password. Repeat typing and retyping as well as calls to their tech centre (@0.25p) per min did not solve the problem, so I cancelled. The cancellation would be completed tomorrow and my number would be 'unmarked' 2 days after that.

Not sure if this is whats causing the max potential broadband connection to be 0.5Mbps compared to 5.5Mbps before I cancelled with Virgin.

Can anyone help??

Do not go with BT unless you are clinically insane! A cursory glance at the threads here should make you aware of BT never solving any speed issues without a serious fight.

Find a provider that will actually care about you. BT won't.

The majority of BT Broadband customers are happy with the service. It's human nature to shout up when there's a problem and to keep quiet when things are fine. My service with BT operates just fine - I just don't post here everyday to shout about it.

In regards to your problem - I'd wait until your line has been cleared fully and then try again.

ps wait for the hate mob to arrive

That isn't the point. If you have a problem you should be able to expect to have it resolved. BT do not do that. They make you speak to some Indians for hours about your cookies and not about your problem. Taking out a contract with BT is a serious gamble in that respect.

They also throttle their customers and lie about doing it.

People can be satisfied with rubbish service. It just means they don't know any better.

Prove it , from what ive seen the majority are not happy with BT. Seen the most unhappy customers in the last two months than i've seen since bt first did broadband.

I was with BT Broadband before and didnt have any problems with them. Not sure about now though. We'll see what happens. So long as I have broadband at home at some decent speeds i'm not too fussed. dont mind the "fair usage policy" thingy or equivalent at all.

There are in excess of 3 million BT broadband customers. How many negative postings/posters are there on this site or other similar sites. On the Bt forum there are 2015 threads and 16000+ posts. Not all of them negative. Work that out as a percentage of 3 million. Zilch.

Us relatively satisfied customers don't go shouting about it. I had a long running complaint with BT. The mistake I made was not taking it higher after a couple of calls. If I had, it would have been settled quickly. My advice from personal experience is , if not satisfied, take it higher immediatly. If we all do this things, will get done.

The procedures are there to help us customers. They are just not advertised.

I have just agreed to another years service, with new equipment and free Vision. What other companies would do that. I know what causes problems so I avoid the issues, with both broadband and Vision.

Not good choice of words. However, to explain, for some reason my line upsets the Home Hub. 3 of my neighbours have no problems at all. Put the hub back on Monday, within 24 hours resyncing problems reoccured,(Drop by 2000kb) Put Voyager 2500v back on (supplied free by Bt as a solution they recommended). All back to normal. Vision works with it. Bt talk is clearer

Plug directly into test socket not extension wires however good they are.

Unplug phone from Sky. If Sky complain plug it back in for a while then take it out.

If speed drops, leave it and go back a bit later. Speed issues happen to me at random times. None of this 8 to 12 PM stuff suffered by others.,
With Vision don't hurry it and its fine.

How can it be FUD when it is our own personal experiences that we are (or were) posting about?

Anyhow, the majority of BT's "Light Users" whom don't seem to suffer from the troubles that 'Medium to Heavy" users are finding from 4PM till 2AM.

So, if you're a "Light User" then great - enjoy it, but if you're a "Medium / Heavy User" then maybe not the best move.

Whats the limits for "Light / Medium / Heavy" Users? Well, BT seem to move the goalposts every hour of the day and will be quoted one figure one minute to then say something completely different the next, and trust me you really don't want to phone up the Indian Call centre if you've troubles... Not a racist thing, purely that they work from predetermined scripts and if you deviate from that script they won't have a clue what you're banging on about.

/sets "Ignore mode" to replies from 'certain' users

ok by FUD I mean posts from certain people on this forum who have nothing better to do than to rubbish BT Broadband to all and sundry because they have had a bad experience. This is not fair. I agree that in some areas BT has its issues - no-one is denying that.

Some poeple on this forum have left BT and just stick around to put the knife in unneccesarily - others will post very unhelpful comments as a response to people with genuine problems or questions that can easily be resolved with a polite answer.

what's that got to do with anything? the throttling people are seeing has been across the board. heavy/medium/light users are all being affected by it. i consider myself a medium user as i get through 20-30gb a month. yet for the last 2 months i've been throttled to kingdom come.

i'm glad your happy but it just isn't right to be recommending bt give the length of the contract. it's hell of a costly mistake to make if things go wrong. if bt were that confident in their service why don't they offer monthly contracts and charge for the connection/hardware.

I phoned BT and was told that the marker on my line was removed and that I can place an order for BT broadband, which took me by surprise. (I phoned Virgin earlier to check on my cancellation and they said it would be completed tomorrow, and that 2 days after that my phone line would be free).

Well, i took the dive and ordered Broadband with BT. Also asked about the 0.5Mbps issue when yesterday it was 5.5Mbps and they said and engineer would look into that (BT wholesale's website said the same thing).

I'll wait till they do a full line test and i'll wait for the test results via email (as detailed in the Help and Support section under "What happens after I place my broadband order online?"

If it is still 0.5Mbps after their tests, I'll cancel.

Still very curious as to why it said 0.5Mbps today, and 5.5Mpbs yesterday.

Maybe I made the wrong decission and should have waited. I'm getting rather fed-up about all this.

Based purely on straight line distance? If so then you could perhaps add another Km or so due to the way that BT route their local loop.

Guess wise for 2.8 (taking into account the above) then 5.5 is fairly accurate, the real determining factor will be your telephone lines "Downstream Attenuation". Ideally it wants to be low for fast speeds, and this can depend on the condition of the telephone wires, distance from exchange, RF interference, etc..

If it's below the old 2Mbit threshold of 46db then you should be good to go, however if your above that and near the mid 50's (like myself) then you'll only get around 1.5Mbit (stable) and higher results in even less.

Still does not explain why i get 0.5Mbps though. Hope it is a glitch in the system (or matrix, however you look at it)

Nothing much I can do now except to stress out and wait.

Still dont understand why when I was with Virgin Media, I keep getting Error 691: invalid username/password when everything was keyed in correctly.

Grrr. previous experience with broadband ISPs have been flawless. Now all this is happening. Why can't it be straightforward.

Hope I didnt make a mistake to go with BT. but I figured, I only have 1 company to deal with when problems come up, as opposed to dealing with 2 seperate companies blaming each other.

I hope you get better than the 0.5Mbps. But despite the views of some, I believe that you've made a sensible choice by going to BT
If you encounter problems you'd be wise to follow the advice of some of the knowledgeable members such as MrSaffron, beerhunter, paulbeattie etc in your dealings with BT.
A relative kept a detailed log of router stats and speedtester results on a spreadsheet when he encountered problems and this provided useful evidence to get the fault escalated and speedily fixed free of charge. Being polite but assertive with BT really works!

So your BT ADSL is live this very minute? If so then post your stats from your modem / router so that we can see if there is a cause for your 512Kb connection.

Take a look at the Vigin forum for potential speeds!

Put it this way, some think BT is slow - according to some reports that I've read here and also from other forum members at some IT forums that I visit, the speeds at times are even worse than the 'Throttled' BT users.

Nope. I just (this afternoon) placed my order with BT. When I keyed in my phone number (online) before ordering, their initial broadband speed returned 0.5Mbps when yesterday it was 5.5Mbps. I then telephoned BT querying this before placing the order and they said that they are also getting 0.5Mbps at their end, following inital checks. They also said that an engineer would be sent out to sort it out (at no cost, although not sure whether the engineer would come to my house, or just to the exchange)

When I was with virgin, I could hardly get online due to invalid username and password. And when I managed to, It was 460kbps (from memory) but it was within the 10 days "training period". Funny thing was when the adsl modem (Speedtouch USB) was reset, I would loose connection with Virgin and get the "invalid username and password" error again. Various calls to them proved futile, as they kept taking me through the same "troubleshoot" steps. They also said there was no problem with my line and my login, but there clearly was, so I gave up and cancelled. (they were good enough not to charge me anything except for the monthly charge, pro-rata-ed.

Okay, USB modems aren't great for "Max" ADSL and you'll really be better off with a dedicated ethernet Router / Modem, so if you're sent the HomeHub then that will already help your situation.

At a guess the 0.5Mbps reported is only a glitch and you'll find that when connected up then you should get close to the 5.5Mb sync speeds, it's not unknown for the online checker to go a bit 'wonky' from time to time..

Ah - thats a bit clearer. You never went through the whole 10 days with Vrigin so you couldn't fathom your best speed anyway. If you are getting a homehub then that will be better than the speedtouch USB. When you have it all setup tell us the line stats. Also when it's training just leave it toget on with it for 10 days - dont switch it off or reset it etc.

Why don't you use your statistical expertise to plot a chart of complaints on the forum of the different providers per hundred customers or such like? Would make an interesting topic for discussion and i would wager that there may be a few surprises.

My own view is that BT offer a pretty good all round package that appeals to punters at a price they are prepared to pay.

There are undoubtedly complaints about BT Broadband support in India. However the comparison with Zen, for example, is interesting as Zen are charging a whopping

I'm back fighting with BT again, well not directly but through my new ISP. At least I'm not dealing with tech support in India no more. Regarding the last page, you say:

In reply to:

I have an attenuation of 53dB, yet many many months ago it use to sit between 49 and 50dB, its went up 3 - 4dB now. BT say my line can only support 2Mb maximum, yet I've had 4 - 5Mb stable and I am 3.4Km from the exchange.

All the tests and research I have done lists 3 - 6Mb. What do you get with Zen, phantom66uk?

Problem is, in my exchange BT runs the show unlike many others here I'm sure their ISP's have their own equipment in some of your exchanges.

With BT my sync rate was almost always 1.5Mbit and if I did get a 2Mbit sync rate then it was never stable.

However still with the same 56db Attenuation*, my Zen connection will sync at 2Mbit and holds there for around 7 to 10 days before just dropping back to a 1.5Mbit profile every now and then.

Although since it's (supposedly) the summer the warmer weather might be helping this along a bit, roll on the cold winter to get a clearer picure!

*56db pulled from Speedtouch 546v6 original firmware with DMT tool at 'default' settings, too lazy to tweak at the moment.

As a side note, when I signed up to "Max" originally the online checkers said that the most I'd get was 3Mbits (Although 1.5 / 2Mbit does me fine! )

[re: phantom66uk] [link to this post]

What I can't understand is BT refuses to give me more than 2Mb at the exchange, and my line ran happily for 5 months between 5 and 5.5 Mb. Now the excuse is my line is too long, I have print outs of the speeds that I can supply to my new ISP if they wish, but they said they don't need it and they will chase it up with BT Wholesale.

Whats so annoying is how BT lied to my new ISP on saying I can get no better than 2Mb. Which to be honest, in most cases I have a speed of 1.8, normally.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/156735743.png

I would have went with Zen, but at the time I checked just over a month ago since I migrated. Zen said during peak hours I would have been put down to 2Mb from 4Mb. Not that I was suspecting that nothing would change from switching from BT to the new ISP. Apart from my download speeds are no longer capped, which I'm thankful for.
At times now it feels like changing to any other ISP to get the speed up above 2Mb feels like its not going to happen, because BT runs the show at my exchange.

What really annoys me is the fact its not like I had these speeds for 10 days or so and it was unstable to achieve it, but to have it for 5 months stable then take it away from me really cheeses me off.

BT troubleshooters pretty high up have logs of my line and have seen the high speeds I once had, so its all recorded and he himself as many others have said there is no reason why it cannot take 4Mb. As any other time this has happened, within 4 hours the speeds went back up for 7 days and then magically vanished. All the complaning to BT in the past got the speeds put back up twice. Though since I had to keep hounding them it has remained where I am now
Why I'm getting just below 2Mb is beyond me and why they keep saying my line is too long is another puzzler. It feels as if they have something personal against me for not giving my 4 - 5Mb back.

Even when I was a BT customer they never sorted it for me, just stalls and runarounds, yet they got somewhat ratty when I left them. As if supposedly they think like they were supplying this great service to me which they were not.
Now it feels like I'm on some sort of black list with them so they really wont fix any problems now, even though they run my local exchange.
I just hope my ISP can rip up a stink with them about this.

I believe you're talking about this?

"- It is likely that speeds no greater than 2Mb will be achieved at peak usage times."

If so, then basically it doesn't mean that you're capped at 2Mb in peak time, more that if it's peak time and the network is extremely busy then you're going to see speeds "Up to" a maximum of 2Mb in peak hours.

If you have the Office Max products then you're going to see speeds "Up To" 4Mb in peak times due to paying extra for traffic Prioritisation.

Although in reality, at the moment the network has excellent capacity!

I could live with that, just not the way it is now, stuck at 1.5 to 2Mb supposedly, 24/7.

Though as I said earlier the problem lies at the exchange. I have no guarantee that changing ISP again would put me on 4Mb. Considering the one I'm on at the moment said I'll get 4Mb (which they are currently chasing up). It would be a real stinker once my 3 month contract is up and go to Zen to find out that I'm still not above 2Mb because BT wont up my line in the exchange.

At least I don't have to go through silly web browser testings and deleting web browser cache/cookies or plugging in micro filter responses from BT's India tech support and be on the phone for hours. Like in the past.
The new ISP is intelligent and treats me with respect, but sadly they have to go through BT Wholesale as well to resolve things instead of me. Hardly waiting 10 seconds and I'm through to someone and off the phone within 5 - 8 minutes. It just feels I get nowhere because of BT still has a hold on me at the exchange.

I try to get away from BT as a ISP, yet they still get me at the exchange. It really sucks for me, and it doesn't matter who I complain to nothing seems to make a permanent solution. Which I'll need to wait 24 - 48 hours before they get back to me.

Ah - another friendly post

For your info I was downloading approx 500kb last night at approx 8pm. I've no doubt that some people are being throttled - but I am not and never have been.

so what you are saying is that you acknowledge that people are having problems but that doesn't matter because your connection is fine? nice logic.

what about my other point about giving the user choice? why not offer monthly contracts? surely if the service is that good, bt have nothing to lose as people will have no reason to leave them. i'd much rather fork out

If people dont like contracts then they should stay away from BT. There's no use sigining up and then whinging about it afterwards.

talk about missing the point. there wouldn't be a problem if the service was good. but many people aren't going to find that out until it's too late.

No-one seems to have covered this so here we go

The online checkers and 'tests' the provider says will be done will do nothing to limit your speed under Max, so long as the provider lets you place the order BT Wholesale will enable a Max service, and the speed is determined once the ADSL modem connects and starts working.

In short if the checker says 0.5Mbps under Max, but you know the line should run at 5.5Mbps (i.e. it has done before) then so long as the various line variables have not changed you should get the 5.5Mbps again.

Good point. It would be interesting if one could compare forum complaints against the data in Service Provider Comparisons.
I accept that many on this forum people have legitimate complaints but suspect that many non-technical users are quite content as long as they can: use email, IM, and browse at a reasonable speed.
Are satisfaction figures available for the silent majority?

Some of the other poster who have moved away are no better off. There is a Zen customer who has found no improvement and they had no more success sorting it out. Why bother to change.

Show me or link this 'Zen" poster whom is no better off, as I saw no mention of it in this thread nor in our Zen forum..

However there was a post, not recent or in Zen. Why would I look in there forum as I will not be using them. I suggest you stick to your Zen forum and leave us BT customers alone. If you don't use them don't critisize them. I am not going searching for you. Its there somewhere.

I didn't make a demand, I asked for a link with this "proof" as I hadn't seen any such complaints of users still being throttled when they changed ISPs..

Glad I struck a nerve with you. Proof, why? As I said if you don't believe me thats your problem:

Anyway,

What upsets me is the poor guy who started this thread must wonder what is going on. He was asking a bit of advice.
The first responce started :-
Do not go with BT unless you are clinically insane!(Not by You)
The second started:-
The majority of BT Broadband customers are happy with the service.

Back to normality I hope

What is the poor guy expected to make of that.

The thread then seemed to degenerate with Pro and Anti Bt posts. Then your demand came to me and I saw red.

I base my opinions on personal experience, as you do. Mine just happens to be different from yours and some others. I also talk to a lot of people, neighbours, friends etc

I had months of problems with Bt, but got it sorted once I went higher. Now I have got wise to BT and will go higher than the normal Tech support if need be.

So I know the score with Bt. To my knowledge, I have never been throttled, capped, restricted in any way.

I will stay with and stick up for BT(UP to a point) until I am let down.

I repeat Over 3 million Bt broadband customers can't all be wrong, with (according to another poster) a low churn rate.

I wish that happened to me, but my line has been stable for weeks and the speed has not changed or been above 1.8. I'm stuck at 1.8 24/7.

Pings on Zen are markedly increased for punters in the South regardless of interleave status as their route takes them to London via Manchester rather than a direct route on BT. Pings on BT are pretty much unbeatable as they use Central Plus and latency is reduced by definition.

We have recently read of a punter being mercilessly throttled on BT 'unlimited' and BT Retail's main man said he was downloading 100meg a month. In comparison, a Zen customer on their 50meg tariff would be facing excess charges that worked out at over

If you synch at 5meg and speedtests are consistently at 2, you have a stuck profile and it is disturbing when you are paying high prices for premium support to hear of the difficulty in getting it fixed.

Sadly I wish that was the case, I use to sync at 5.5. Then slowly went down to 5xxx, 4xxx, 3xxx, 2xxx and 1xxx. Sometimes 3 figures.

Says my ip profile is 2000KBps but my ip throughout test is 1.8.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/118479980924489230006.html

This is what its been at for the past 2 months now.

Next door neighbor can get 5Mbps, and the house across the road can get 4.5Mbps.
They go through the same junction box. Their cables are just as old as mine, at least 30 years old.

Yet I once had 5/5.5 for 5 months stable and can no longer get it... what the heck is going on... doesn't matter who I go to, who I complain too, its sorry for the inconvenience. Or its not our fault responses. Nobody does anything to fix it. Its like nobody cares whoever I contact. I just keep getting the same responses, sorry and no solution.

BT have changed all their records saying my area wont support any better than 2Mbps. Something fishy is seriously going on here.

Fanboys are attributed with a sycophantic devotion to the creators and principles behind a work with which they are currently enthralled. Fanboys are noted for a very emotional attachment to their chosen subject, often taking negative remarks about it as a personal attack. They will readily engage in debates, but will fall back on emotional responses when challenged on facts. For example, a fanboy may go out of his way to point out negative and often untrue statements about their obsession's rivals. Fanboys are often hostile towards critical review of their chosen subject

Well thats good of you to edit my posts and give people another viewing.

Fanboys, what are you on? You obviously have a major problem. I should seek help. You have achieved nothing by being so insulting.

I have been insulted by far more intelligent people than you.
Thanks for the publicity for BT I'll let everybody else make there minds up. Ther are lots of other people happy to use them

Fanboy, American expression not in the Oxford English Dictionary. Very clever!

I am not fan of Bt. I use them because the complete package suits my needs, in spite of previous problems ,at a reasonable cost.

Why? it was just getting interesting

I've noticed a large amount of posts from ex-BT punters promoting Zen yet failing to mention the potential huge costs to high bandwidth users or the poor pings for those living in the South. For a punter living in Brighton, going to Leeds or Manchester on route to London will hit gaming pings

When i was silly enough to join a dodgy reseller that was pimping the forums for business, my ping time to my gameserver was 50ms instead of BT's 10, simply because i was going to Manchester and back.

Now we hear of a Zen customer suffering poor speeds and Zen's premium support being unable to action a fix. Despite the punter paying a whopping

I'm not a gamer so being selfish, I don't care!

Seriously though, there is a thread in our subboard about pings to game servers and the biggest issue at the moment is peering through 'Telewest / ntl / virgin' servers. The majority of the pings listed by users are in the 40ms range which is IMO perfectly reasonable for an enjoyable game of a fast first person shooter.

Obviously if you want proper 'competition' speeds then of course anything lower than 40ms would be more desirable..
