Morning all, I'm currently with Virgin on there 50MB service & thinking of leaving them as i don't download as much i used to & don't want to try there 30MB service in case i go over what I'm allowed in peak times, would like to know if anyone has left Virgin for
BT Infinity & if there happy with service or anyone who has had the service for a while if they could say if its stable & reliable, i went on BT speed checker site & its says i should get around 30MB down & 7.2MB up, id be happy with that as long as i know service is reliable, also could someone tell me what the download limit is, even though it says unlimited, also my master phone socket isn't near any power sockets will that be a problem.
|
|
|
|
I couldn't order Infinity as my D/L speed was predicted as <15Mbps. However, I opted for the 'With Fibre' option and am getting reliable (very reliable) D/L of around 25Mbps.
I don't D/L that much, but my 'Option 3' is unlimited (subject to fair use, etc).
BT / OR will need to install their Modem and you will need to connect that to their (your) Home Hub with the supplied Ethernet cable (I think mine is around 2 Metres long). I assume you are talking about an Infinity FTTC connection.
Both Modem and Hub need a Power connection. However, from the Master Socket they can fit a 'Data Extension Cable' of up to 30 Metres in length, so your Modem can connect on the end of this in a suitable location.

Thanks for that G3UZF yes i am talking about Infinity FTTC connection good to know that they can run a 'Data Extension Cable' from my master socket as my PC is in my bedroom but no where near 30 Metres away at tops id say 3 Metres away, do you mind if i ask how long you have had you service & option 3 is unlimited is it, i already have a BT Line so hope that would save them time on install.

Hi
Had the FTTC connection for around 3 Months now. Broadband now a vast improvement over the old Exchange connection (rural village and a long way from the Exchange).
Option 3 is unlimited.
BT / OR did a great job with my install. They will probably phone you on the day of the install to tell you your phone and broadband connection will be out for 10 minutes or so while they move the wires around in the cabinet.
Then, they changed the Master Socket, put in about 10 Metres of Data Extension (It's Ethernet cabling by another name), screwed the Modem to the wall and ate most of my Jaffa Cakes!
Should all go swimmingly; good luck.

Thanks for that, i will ring Virgin tomorrow when I'm off see what kind of deal they can do for me on there 30MB connection, if its not as good as BTs ill cancel & place an order for BT Infinity unlimited, i already have BT Line, done a speed check on there website & its saying 30MB DL & 7.2MB upload, if i get that & its unlimited ill be happy.i cant see anywhere on there site about download limit. also is there a cooling off period after install.

as far as i no,on bt infinity FTTC as soon as you are connected you are tied into your contract and you cant get out...no cooling off period, though i am not 100% sure about that.maybe someone else can confirm this for you..
the reason i posted was to say, if you dont download much then i cant see how the virgin media 30Mb service wont be suitable for you...it has quite a healthy download limit..
http://www.virginmedia.com/images/tm-table-su-large.jpg
you can see on the chart there that you can download up to 15Gb per day during peak times and unlimited out with that..
you can upload up to 1.75Gb during peak times and unlimited outwith
hope this helps you

Thanks for that, but was just thinking if i wanted to download during peak hours 15GB might not be enough & wouldn't want to go over my limit & then have my speed cut for 5 hours, with BT Infinity unlimited i wouldn't have to worry about that, i hope.
|
|
|
yea you make a valid point.....15Gb is quite a large amount though....and all they do is cap your speed for a few hrs if you go over..
sorry i cant help as far as knowing if infinity is unlimited or not..
il have a quick look and see if i can see anything..
edit: http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/bt-infinity-f...
there is some information on the above link about the infinity fup...

Sorry to say there is no cooling off period with Infinity.
Once its ordered, you're stuck with an 18-Month Contract.
I suppose that if there is a major problem and BT won't budge, there is always litigation (costs £££).

so your wanting to leave virgins unlimited 50 for bt unlimited upto 40 and pay exactly the same, even if you don't download as much as you used to would'nt it be worth keeping the extra speed for the same price.
i made the mistake of leaving vm thinking i didn't download as much so dont need the speed and i regret it loads because i realised how much i did use it going back in feb (although mine was more 50 to 10 so i do notice it a lot more)
just my 2 cents anyway if you do decide to switch i wish you the best.

it wouldn't be paying the same I'm paying Virgin £45 a month for the 50MB service, i would be paying BT £25-P a month so theres a lot of difference in price, also BT Infinity option 2 is unlimited now.
|
|
|
so your still paying the old price? 50meg hasn't been £45 for about 2 year its 25 with there phone and 35 without (info from the website plus i had it 1.5 year i paid 25) so if you paying 45 id ring VM up and demand a hell of a lot of money back off them.

yes my 12 month contract ran out in February 2011 still paying £45 a month i canceled there phone line in June i think, so you think i should be paying £35 a month thought that was for new customers who didn't take a phone line.
|
|
|
as others have said you should not be paying 45 quid for virgin media 50..
virgin give you the same deals as they do for new customers...
when i was on 50 before i moved to 100....my monthly service charge for 50 got reduced when the new prices came out...
|
|
|
yea if no phone it should be £35 a month weather your new or not, my uncle got 50meg the week it was rolled out here when it was still £45 and as soon as VM changed the prices he was automatic put onto the £25 price change (with phone).
Hes way over his 12 months and still only pays £25 so i dont see why you still have to pay 45 i mean100meg is only £35 with phone £45 without so your paying the 100meg price.
worth a phone call to VM might get a nice rebate and a few months discount or something they tend to do a lot to keep custom.

When we had 10mb broadband at £25 a month, after 12 months it was £20 for new customers. Virgin offered it at £13 a month to us when I switched back to sky. Had issues & left anyway

Your loyalty should be rewarded. You should pay less than new customers IMO.
Virgin generally have good retentions as do BT. Virgin India however have their limited script. Try calling customer services on 0800 052 0397, can often get through to a good English call centre with this.
(if on a mobile ring 029 2108 2800 & then dial the 0800 number - makes it part of your inclusive mins)

virgin give you the same deals as they do for new customers...
But only if you yell at them...!
I've been on cable since it was Bradford Cable and that's some time. My package price went up and up and I was paying almost £60 a month for TV XL, BB L and phone with no options, we prefer to use our mobiles.
I was made redundant and called them, they dropped me from TV XL to TV M and that's at no charge, I stayed on BB L at £25 a month and kept the phone, to which they added a weekend calls package and charged £13.90. There was a also a £5 payment charge as I don't use direct debit. Total should have been £43.90 but they allowed £1.50 against the payment charge and a £10 loyalty discount so it came down to £32.40.
It still seemed a lot, so I queried the BB charge as it's shown as being only £13.50 a month for new customers - they would not give me that price, saying that the discount I was getting was enough.
Ignore 'special 3 month at' offers and I have BB L which is £13.50, TV M which they don't list any more so consider it free, plus phone with weekend, so just line rental of £13.90, monthly payment fee of £5 on top makes it - £32.40 - the same as I pay now, with 'loyalty' discounts.
Amazing!

so i need to get on to them tomorrow & see what retentions can offer me or i will cancel because even for 30MB BB thee going to charge me £32-50P i can get BT Ifinity for £25-60P so that sounds a better deal also dont have to worry about STMs like on Virgin with there 30MB BB.

Ash
Morning Ash,
Just an update about price Ive been paying Virgin for my 50MB BB, i didn't get chance to call anyone in UK call centre but i spoke to a member of staff on Cable Forum he saw one of my bills & told me I'm paying £35 so i don't know what to do now stick with Virgin & 50MB & have unlimited downloads the service has been rock solid since Ive had it, or move to Bt & save just under £10 a month loss 20Meg on download speed I'm not downloading that much these days so not sure what to do, i use utorrents to download & see Bt throttle them i can max out my connection on Virgin.

Personally id stick with vm yea £10 more but getting rock solid 50meg unmanaged connection,
I cannot wait to get back my VM connection i did consider BT infinity as my next move from sky,
But when i looked at only been able to get 30/7 and it been traffic managed for exactly same price as VM (id have phone with vm to knock it down to 25) it was no comparison just go back with vm for me.
In The End though its down to would you rather have the extra upload save a few pounds but lose uptp 20meg download and possibly be hit by traffic management
or if your happy with the upload speed and prefer the unmanaged downloads but dont mind paying the extra tenner stick with vm.
also if you goto BT infinity and find you dont like it as other have said there's no getting out of it so is it worth it.

Yes all what you have said is very true, i do like Virgins BB like i said its rock solid, think I'm a little crazy when it comes to technology i always want to try the latest thing, but like you said if i try BT & don't like it I'm stuck in 18month contract, don't fancy that also just thought that i could get congestion at my exchange, at moment with Virgin everything is fine, someone on here said that BT will up the speed of Infinity to 70MB in the new year, ill wait for that unless Virgin bring out the 100MB service to my area by then.
Regards
James

we've had it since june this year im considering it when i go back in feb but ill decide weather to go back on 50 or 100 when the time comes.

yea probably best off they might also have some good offers on for existing customers for 100 meg by then.
Funnily enough when i told vm i was leaving them for sky this year they gave me some right offers that would of been really cool and saved me a fortune, But id already had my sky tv about 3 month so still went ahead and switched broadband and phone to them, Because the offer from VM included TV which i could not get out of with sky.

i am 100% happy with it
does what it is supposed to do,dont really no what else to say lol
the superhub:
apart from some issues being reported regarding the wireless range and bridge mode not being supported yet all seams well..
i dont use wireless i have a hard wired home network so i am unaffected by these issues
they will both be getting fixed soon in firmware update 'r30'.it is in beta testing at the moment.
good to hear think ill go on 100 then im in contract till feb so it should all be sorted by then i also use wired sept for my macbook but i use my desktop more so i wont use wifi much my self
Ash
Hey Ash. hows it going, just checked Virgin Medias site on update to upgrade my UBR to 100MB & i got a nice surprise its now Lewisham Dec-11
so looks like i will be sticking with Virgin, will have to read a bit more about the 100MB service as a lot of people are complaning about the modem that they supply for the service.
James.

Oh thans a nice surprise then apparently the R30 firmwares out now wich fixes a lot of the problems people were complaining about, also that means you can put the superhub into modem only mode now so its just like the old setup modem + own router hopefully they'll have some nice offers on come december for you then.
I cant wait till february then i can switch back to VM after all people have being saying on here about it, it seams 100% worth it especially for me as i host some small gaming server (limited to skys [censored] 790k upload speed) but with 100 ill be able to have a lot more people so role on feb and 100meg for me and role one dec and 100meg for you

Nice one Ash, you will love Tivo even though it still has a few teething problems like EPG not being up to date & you cant record in background & watch TV like you could when i had my V+ box, theres also no reminders on it like there was on V+, but there ment to be a software update in October to sort some of the problems out, well you beat me to the 100Meg good luck with both installs hope it all gose well, im jealous now about the 100Meg.
