I'm on the WNPBK exchange in North Wales.
I have just seen a big reel of what I think is fiber cabling? Its black with at least 2 yellow stripes on it.
There is also the following on roadworks.org:
Haydock Close, Leeswood, Flintshire
Works Start: 13 Jan
End: 21 Jan
Low impact, delays unlikely
Location : (PCP6) OPPOSITE SIDE OF 1 LLWYN GOODWOOD CROSSING CARRIAGE WAY TO SIDE OF 1 ON HAYDOCK CLOSE PONTYBODKIN, FLINTSHIRE CH7
Description : Install 3m of 1 way poly duct in Footway,Install 5m of 1 way poly duct in Carriageway,Install 9m of 1 way poly duct in Verge,Provide 1 Provide/Recover 1 NGA Cab and base (1.5m x 0.5m)
Current status: Planned work about to start
Traffic lights, etc: Traffic control (give & take)
That is for a cab up the road from me. I am connected to the first cab from the exchange witch is at the other side of the village but there is a tone of room on the path so I don't imagine they would need traffic control and thus not listed on roadworks.org?
I am I getting excited over nothing?? I sure hope not!

You have certainly seen some work commencing, though its the tubing you have seen and not the fibre itself. No matter, things are happening.

If that isn't your cab then it won't affect you. You need to go and see if anything is happening on yours.

I would imagine mine is getting done as mine is the first after the exchange! The one listed on roadworks.org is up the road and is the 2nd cab after the exchange.

IME from the renct install in our village, the work can be sread out over quite apriod of time, and doesn't happen in what seems from the outside the logical way. Though no doubt it makes sense if you are plannign the work. Not all cabs might need the same work.
Eg, I'm on Cabinet 1 in the middle of the village, there was quite a bit of activity on the outskirts putting in the black tubing/cable like you describe, but I don't remember that I ever saw them do anything like that for my cabinet (which is over the road and round the corner. Maybe the exsiting ducting was sufficient for their purposes.
The obvious work done near my cabinet was installing the FTTC cabinet about 30M away (yonks before anything else happened). doing something by the main cabinet, and then shortly before it all went live digging up the road/pavement between them to connected them together.

Sean
There appears to be lots of work planned around you to complete by March 2014, on the Superfast Wales site it shows Pontybodkin, Caergwrle, Mold West and Northop due by Mar 2014.
Once they get started in an area they seem to do a lot quite quickly. Have a look at the exchanges down the coast from Bangor to Aberdovey to see what has been done in the last 6 months.
There is of course the potential for delays at this time of year due to the Weather but your terrain doesn't look too liable to flood! Just hope it doesn't snow a lot!
I would expect from the other Welsh BDUK work that all the cabs for the exchange will be done and they may even provide a new one for the Exchange only customers.
The Cab you identify will need the roadworks to get to the new cab or to get power to the new cab if it is going to be placed in the grass reservation along side the old.
If there is a space and a power source close to your cab they won't need roadworks, this is one reason the planning takes so long as they have to consider these factors for every cab.
|
|
|
Thanks for the info, but either im not reading the same thing as you, or something but the superfast wales still says that work will start in march and not finish.
I suppose its kind of good news that they have started work 2 months early.
I can only hope that fibre comes sooner rather than later! I only really want the upload xD

The March date is by when the First cabs will be available, all these dates are in 3 month periods!, So either Mar, June, Sep or Dec and cover a number of exchanges that will be done over the period.
Not all the exchange may be covered by the date but some will always be done.
In NW Wales they often had the first cabs available early in the 3 month period.
The last ( hardest to do cabs) may be later and the extra work to give the outlying areas a long way from the cab the min 2Mb will come later. Some groups of outlying houses may even get FTTP but these will happen after the cabs have been done.
As you are on a cab in the village you can expect to be done in the first period.
You may just suddenly notice a FTTC cab alongside yours if it doesn't require roadworks. But it will still require power and connecting to the old cab and fibre to the exchange that appears to be some distance from the village.( Are you in Leeswood or Pontybodkin?)
The fibre may go back to Gresford via Caergwrle rather than Pontybodkin. As it looks an easier route.

I can recall BT laying a cable of some sorts between Mold and... Somewhere this way, I dont know where. This was a good 8 months ago now.
I'm in Leeswood. About 230 meters from the cab here:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview#!data=!1m8!1m3...
This cab, at the other end of the village, Dingle Road, Has markings on the foot path opposite, in front of that small wall.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview#!data=!1m8!1m3...
There is also this cab, that is between the 2 with no markings.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview#!data=!1m8!1m3...
And the other cab that has info on roadworks.org witch is about a mile away:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview#!data=!1m8!1m3...
And here is another cab between my cab and the one above. Also no markings or roadworks.org info.. Again maybe there is not need for roadworks but I still find it odd that no markings have popped up.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview#!data=!1m8!1m3...
Well they are due to start work on Monday so I will keep an eye out. If I see a cab going in next to mine I might get so excited I'll give my self a heart attack xD

But in a odd location:

Oh.
Well I imagine then that all customers after that cab will be connected to the new FTTC cab there then? Rather than 7. Around a 500m gap between cab 1 and 7.
But why have it called cab 1? 7 up my end, 4 is opposite the pub near the garage down the road, 6 near dingle road. BT's cab numbering scheme confuses me xD

The Cabs were numbered as they were put in The exchange would have been built in the 1930s to 1950s and as as more cabs were required they put more cabs in numbering them in order!.
Thus there appears to be no order to them when looked at geographically!
The later ones may have only appeared in the 1970s and 1980 when most people started to get a phone! so they don't appear to be connected to the age of the houses either until after around 1985.
|

1 is after all an odd (not even) number!

Some background-
In 1978, Post Office Telephones reckoned that about 65% of Domestic Premises in England and Wales had telephones.
The figure for Scotland was 55%.
But up here in Fife, this estate had about 95% - rather exceptional - yet PO Telephones wanted to erect a public coin-box phone, at a time when it was isolated and no obvious "passing trade".
Out of 77 houses, 75 definitely had phones, one definitely did not, with one unknown.

out of interest sean if your on 24mb why is it the longest days of your life im only on 8mb sync about 6/6.5 throughput and for most use this is fine. Apart from say video 24mb would cure that. If your on 24mb talktalk what benefits are you looking to gain using your connection from a fttc line, apart from latency, id love 24mb from the same exchange were on but refuse to use talktalk (only llu provider for others at our exchange)

There is 4 of us living here and its the 1mb upload thats the problem.
When all 4 of us are home and using the internet it all gets slow and laggy
why not use talktalk?
I was kind of dreading it when I first switched over on the 25th of August 2012 but not had any note worthy issues at all.
Connection has gone down a few times due to problems at talktalk's end but was never off more than an hour or so. Speed and latency have also been 100% fine as well.

didn't notice any work from mold to pontblyddyn in my travels for the 7km plus fibre being blown.. not sure if it has been done? bearing in mind...looking at the planned roadworks for the PCP's that were supposed to happen. those happened later than scheduled.
had a look on roadworks.org again and there is more planned fibre being blown from pontblyddyn up to the exchange it seems (another 2.5km run) maybe they have blown that 7km fibre?? did not see any rolling roadworks
plenty of work going on in caergwrle now too, there due to be enabled in the same timeframe as pontybodkin exchange
oh.. and in regards to talktalk could not jusitfy moving currently... back in the day looking for a reliable isp i have been with zen now since 2007 and business email addresses are in place (with zen email addresses) was more hassle to switch away just for the speed benefit. They have been rock solid for 6+ years now so would not think of switching away will just upgrade to fibre with them when its available. Personal use would be great to switch for some extra bandwidth

I saw BT + Contractors out in the week working in mold with rolling works down the B5444
Also had some guys here in leeswood yesterday putting in some ducting.
I see that caergwrle is showing as "PCP BDUK" But here in leeswood BDUK was not mentioned on the info from roadworks.org
I used to be with Zen, fantastic ISP and staff that know what they are doing.. but it just got to expensive for me at the time. I see now that Zen have some nice prices now.

Best thing you could do whether switching or not is purchase a domain name, I use 1and1. and it costs me £3.59 a year. I then set up email addresses and set them to forward to my ISPs email address. That way I get a personalised/professional email addresses, and if I ever move ISP I would just need to change the redirection address at 1and1. Cost for doing this is just the domain name, no need for email hosting with 1and1.
Change the settings in your email client to reflect your new email address, advise customers and overtime they will use your new email address. Both old and new email addresses will still receive email.

Are you my twin by any chance?
My cab on my tiny piddly exchange in the Scottish Highlands also went FTTC live overnight and just placed an order with TT Business. Estimated speeds are 73/19, won't have have to put up with my slow 18 meg LLU connection any longer LOL Was offered an installation date of 9th April but chose 6 May as i'm going offshore soon

Hi,
My exchange (Pentyrch) is showing as taking orders, but by Cabinet doesnt seem to be showing as fibre available as yet. There IS a new cabinet in my street (Cabinet 10) and I say Openreach engineers outside it a few weeks ago and they said theyd just resolved a problem with it and after it had been tested it would be ready.
BT DSL checker still not showing as available on that Cabinet. Can any of you guys help with what else I can check, how, with who etc? Should I check that the Cabinet has power going to it first?
Ta!
|
|
|
Its just a waiting game for now.
Just keep checking the checker, seems like it may go live any day now... as long as there are no more problems.
You should go to the cab and check if there is any sound coming from it. If there is then its close to being active.

I have found something I find a little odd.
A few houses, around 4 that I have found thus far are EO lines and they are right next to the TE.
Other houses next to the TE are actually connected to PCP7. And in some cases the line comes from a house, past the TE and up the road to PCP7 and then back to the TE.
So it seems the amount of people on EO lines can be counted on one hand!... Maybe two.
And it also seems the Fibre connection is coming from Mold to server the cabs as there is no WBC/21CN (ADSL2+) from Pontybodkin TE. I would of expected 21CN to become available if Fibre was coming from the local TE.
So it looks like a few poor souls are stuck with ADSL Max.
It also seems that people in Pontybodkin that are served by cab 3 are not getting FTTC at all. Unless there are plans later to bring FTTC to that cab.

So I listened to the Cabinet, and no power going to it that I could hear of (no humming etc) - how loud should it be?
Cant see any sign of planned roadworks looking at roadworks.org, so not sure now if it might actually be ages off??!!!
|
|
|
Its loud enough to hear. I could hear mine humming as I approached it. But it was night time.
One way to check if power has been connected is to look at the patches of tarmac where the path has been dug up. There is 2 patches at all the cabs here, 1 for when the cab and its ducts were installed and 1 were the power line was put in.

There is one way you may find out if FTTC is scheduled for a cabinet, use the full address checker, and enter just the postcode for the cabinet location. You may have to try several around it's area, often you can find the DSLAM listed, sometimes it might be under the same postcode as the PCP, sometimes not. Sometimes you can't find the DSLAM or PCP, which doesn't mean it isn't comming. Try CT88ET for an example of just the DSLAM in the results list, and CT88RX for PCP and DSLAM, you may need to scroll down the list.

I haven't always been able to find them even for cabinets which are providing fttc, and as Mr Saffron says it may be getting FTTP, or nothing of course.

Even with BDUK (SuperfastCymru) it would appear that roll out across an exchange area can take a few months. In Holywell (WNHW) for example, which is a full BDUK area, the first cabinets went live at the end of 2013 but not all areas were done. They seem to keep popping back to install new cabinets every now and then until hopefully the whole area is enabled.

Anyone on Cab 2 been connected yet?
Yes this afternoon. I originally ordered via the website but when I came to give the the MAC code (TT to BT) the lady said that there were earlier appointments than the 7th August one the website gave me initially.
The engineer came last Thursday at about 7pm and found he had an issue getting it to sync, something about the fibre port and he tried another one but it still did not work so marked it faulty and left me on ADSL.
They were supposed to send someone out on Friday and give me an update today, about 4pm though it all went off including the phone line and the HH5 reconnected through BT and the details below, they have not rung back yet with an update.
Currently getting these values according to the meagre information the HH gives you (unless it is buried in the troubleshooting event log):
Line state: Connected
Connection time: 0 days, 01:07:48
Downstream: 34.83 Mbps
Upstream: 5.414 Mbps
As the road goes I am about 640m from Cab 2 and the wholesale checker gives the following:
FTTC Range A (Clean) 38.2 30 7.7 6.1 -- Available
FTTC Range B (Impacted) 31.6 16.5 7.7 4.4 -- Available
So some progress can be made on the current figures and the line previous has been quite clean with virtually no reconnections so we'll see.

Yes, he changed it over on Thursday from the NTE5 and left it there after the connection problems.

Shouldn't be any wiring problems then.

Seems like the School here in Leeswood is getting some sort of FTTP.
BT have been installing more ducting (Black pipe with yellow stripe) between the exchange and the school.
But The cabs here are fed from Mold, Not the local Exchange. So either they did not need more ducting from mold to here, I did not see them install it or something else is going on.
ADSL Checker does not mention FTTP/oD either. Im so jelly

They also recently dug up the path infront and up to the cab from the BT man hole cover.

I'm nosey as well and as a NGA van was doing work less than a hundred yards a way I had a chat with one of the guys.
Apperantly at the moment it's clearing blocked ducts. it seems as if most of the areas that are getting FTTC in the 97% superfast lancashire target by the end of the year have had their cabinets installed with really only those down for FTTP left to do, and he confirmed that I am down for FTTP.
More information than I have ever got out of BT or superfast Lancashire.
