LLU Line Underperforming?

[link to this post]

Hi
I've just had my line regraded from 20CN ADSL to ADSL2+ LLU through a TalkTalk reseller.

My previous adsl stats were 21.5db attenuation and a stable 8.1snr.
With these figured I would have expcted around 19000kbps sync going off the kitz and farina checkers.

My current stats are:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15897 kbps 1022 kbps
Line Attenuation 24.5 db 14.9 db
Noise Margin 6.1 db 9.3 db

This seems a bit on the low side? My snr is around 6.4 most of the time but varies between 5.8 and 6.7 depending on time of day.

Is there some sort of line management on the talktalk llu stuff even through a reseller? the DMT tool shows line line as having 64 depth interleaving on too, will this affect sync speed? Also - I seem to remember that the target margin in 9db - maybe this is not helping either?

I should also point out that my router is plugged directly in to the nte5 socket which no extensions.

Any suggestions are most welcome!

line attenuation jumps around 4-5db when switching to adsl2/+

my line attenuation is 25.5 and i get around 15800 sync speed so i think you're line is performing just fine.

Hi
Yes - Im aware that attenuation jumps by about 3db but the checkers use your ADSL1 attenuation to estimate your ADSL2+ sync. at the attenuation i was at and even now I should be syncing higher. Heck I've seen people with an origional attenuation of 28db getting better sync then me.

Well to maximise performance matching router chipset and DSLAM

it could give a massive boost 2-3mbps is possible though its hard to do it sometimes

my DSLAM is broadcom and matching it with a broadcom gets me around 1800kbps extra.

Though every line is different in perfect conditions you would be syncing at 18+ Mbps

Yes, you're right! You should be syncing at 18-19 Meg on 6 dB NM.

No, but I'm getting 19 Meg with a DG834GT on 26 dB attn but with 3 dB NM Fast path. So you should be able to get similar on lower attn, but higher NM.

Have you got stats from test socket? Removed ring wire, checked extensions, swapped filters ... ?

Reseller is Vivacity

When the line was enabled it has (and still has for the moment) the maximum interleaving on - I know on ADSL1 this affected your max sync - not sure if it applies here tho.

My Router is plugged in to the BT master socket - no extensions. Have tried a DG834GT and 585v6.

No extensions to check - also tried two other filters.

Is it into the master with just the short ADSL cable, or are you using a plug-in phone extension between the two?

Hi
Its Master socket >filter > router rj11 cable > router.

I never have a a phone connected either - but I just borrowed a corded one just to test and when its plugged in I can hear a faint crackling/shhh sort of noise. Is a little noise normal or should there be absolutely no noise on the line? Would noise like that affect the dsl side?

The only way you're going to sync higher is to find more noise margin to use. You should try Routerstats to monitor the noise on the line and see if you can reduce it.

Possibly, the problem is the frequencies DSL uses is the same as MW radio, so you can't hear them. But the phone should be completely quiet.

On the QLT there should be no "a faint crackling/shhh sort of noise". The difficulty is getting it to show up on an automated voice line test, or if you can still get BT people on the line that they can hear it.

your noise margin is low for the length of your line.

I have 28db attenuation and get a better noise margin than you of 12db.

smile [cough]
There is no direct correlation between length of line and noise margin.

Unless you are on ADSL(1) with Zen, (I assume you are still with Zen), a noise margin of 12dB immediately after connecting is indicative of current or past fairly serious problems.

If you are on ADSL2+ your connection speed should be well in excess of 16Mbps. Are you, and is it? The speed test result in your sig indicates ADSL2+. You should be getting over 14Mbps on a speed test.

If it is lower, I think a thread of your own questioning it is indicated, as continung here would be poaching and also way off topic.

As per BatBoy, only I think he is being a little conservative with his 13Mbps.

Unless you have ongoing problems 14Mbps or slightly higher connection should be possible. Your attenuation is 33dB, not the 28dB you stated earlier.

I repeat, this now needs to be a separate thread smile. It is nothing whatsoever to do with the OP's problem nor (I presume) with LLU.

Remember, audible noise should be reported as a voice fault to your phone line rental company. If that is BT I believe they now have an automated testing system you can trigger, but if that doesn't detect it I would try to get talking to someone, using the phone in the test socket. Do not mention any broadband issues!

That way you may get agreement that there is noise, and you should be safe.

In general, getting audible noise fixed is far easier than getting the associated broadband underperformance fixed, and does fix the broadband.

Not really; I suspect your target SNR is 6db on the downlink.

I get similar on my BE line; the best sync I get is 17,000 very occasionally, and normally I'm at the 16,800 level as now. BE let me try 3db target SNR and my line sync's but there is enough noise I can't hold the sync for more than a couple of hours at best. The SNR will wander during the day by 0.5 at least, often more.

Could be a disturbance to the connection somewhere on the line caused by any number of things that results in crackles etc. being heard during a quiet line test.

Hopefully OR will fix the problem for you, free of charge, if it's exchange side of the nte5 which seems very likely since you tested voice quality (quiet line test) via the test socket and the issue was also confirmed by your phone service provider.

Don't wish to be negative here ,but when i had a PTSN fault which after several months became more persistent and louder , it even occurred during a call with BT it was so loud that it wiped out everything being spoken, they heard it too, but it counted for nothing, she still read out the warning that i could be charged the £130 fee , but as it was still intermittent i didn't take the chance, line eventually died completely so had an obvious fault ,

Did they check from the test socket in the nte5?

When I had an OR engineer called out to check my line late last year he started from the nte5 test socket then worked his way to the exchange via the cabinet etc. BTW he detected errors at the nte5 initially and found the problem to be at the exchange. However that was first reported by me as a broadband fault and not a voice fault but the two were eventually found to be related.

Thanks for replying BatBoy.

BT line comes from the nearest pole - down the side of the house and through a hole in the wall straight in the back of the NTE5. Router is plugged directly in to that - no extensions alarms or sky box just this:

line in > NTE5 >filter > dsl cable > router.

Tried swapping the dsl filter and dsl cable as I mentioned before this made no difference.

Hopefully Vivaciti will have a look in here - my pings have gone through the roof since yesterday (anywhere between 60 and 300 to bbc.co.uk) and im struggling to hit 1meg down - maybe the two are related.

erm, that's no good. What I meant was, the problems are probably on the Openreach side, not your side.
Now, it could be anywhere from your master socket to the exchange, not forgetting the tie-pairs in the exchange.
Wanna ask your reseller to get the tie-pairs changed?

Something is disturbing the adsl2+ frequencies because you had a good stable connection with adsl1.

I use a TT reseller (xilo/uno partial LLU) and pings to bbc.co.uk are 34ms, downstream sync 13901, atten 36.5, snr 6, throughput ~11300Kbps 24/7.

It's a shame you didn't get an OR SFI engineer to check for errors from your nte5 test socket because there is certainly something not quite right somewhere exchange side of your nte5.

Have opened a ticket or spoken to vivaciti about this lower than expected adsl+2 performance?

Wouldn't worry about the errors just yet - I get those when the 585 v7 first establishes a connection to the TT kit at the exchange.

Downstream sync doesn't look that brilliant though considering your 23db attenuation...upstream sync looks fine...

Odd thing is - when I plugged the router in, it still had the previous owners user details in it. Oddly enough - it still connected but with a completley different IP address to my normal one - let me connect and browse. I didnt think this was supposed to happen?

What's the situation with your vivaciti ticket: has a line inspection by an OR SFI engineer been suggested by vivaciti on the basis of your low downstream sync? Plenty of dropped connections per day would certainly warrant a SFI check for sure

Hi
I logged another call with PO on thursday as this was suggested to me that this was the way to go. BT did somthing on friday (dont know what) and any remaining noise on the line seems to have gone. Now either by luck of design the error rate for last night was well down and it held sync but the sync hasn't increased.

Vivaciti suggested raising the target snr to 9 - which would make sync worse .

These are my current tg585v7 stats (xilo/uno - TT partial LLU):

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1.022 / 13.839

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0,00 / 2,00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,0 / 19,5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 20,5 / 37,0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 10,5 / 6,0

With your downstream attenuation you should really be getting an extra 5Mbps on the downstream sync - vivaciti just talking about raising the sn margin (?) to 9dB does seem rather unhelpful...

Depends if raising the snr target was in response to the issue of errors or sync rate - if it was to get your errors down then it can be a good trade since high error rates really hurt streaming web content and you can have better performance in that area if you sacrifice some of the headline sync rate for overall stability with less errors.

Tweaking performance is more then just going after the highest raw sync rate possible, its about what works best for the user.

It's 80%, (has been for a long time, I used to think it was 70% as well, so maybe it used to be), but those look like 2Mbps fixed. As though they never got reset. It would make sense for them to be the same on a fixed speed connection.

It's still in the 10 day training period, so I think they're on defaults - the 21CN upgrade only went live last week AFAIK and I placed a manual regrade order before the bulk ones went through. (It hasn't had a single resync, it just went off for 60 seconds and came back up like that).

Hi,
Raising the SNR was to help improve the stability and try to get rid of the errors on the line, it would not have been to get a higher connection speed, I believe the advise was to get the snr up a notch until the phone line issue has been looked at then to drop it back down.

Fetched 234 MB in 2min 12s (1,768 kB/s)

Which is pretty good really. (The capitalisation of k,M and B is correct in that quote).

wget with the 200MB file reported:

2012-03-26 18:11:12 (2.08 MB/s) - `200MB.zip' saved [209715200/209715200]
.

Given how new the 21CN upgrade in this area is and the lack of bulk upgrades it's not unlikely that I have a whole VP to myself right now though.

Hi,
Raising the SNR was to help improve the stability and try to get rid of the errors on the line, it would not have been to get a higher connection speed, I believe the advise was to get the snr up a notch until the phone line issue has been looked at then to drop it back down.

I understand this and have updated the ticket.

By the back entrance up from Llanbadarn road.

Your line wont be that much shorter than mine then. Quite curious!

Since my line is presumably newer than yours (these flats have been flats for < 10 years) it's possible that you've got some far older copper with correspondingly old joints somewhere exchange side of the NTE, or even a segment of aluminium somewhere.

Those look OK, particularly the 200MB file one, showing 16Mbps or so. Your maximum is approaching 18Mbps.

If you have Flash installed then www.speedtest.net is useful.
