Can anyone recommend any other routers that will work with Sky Max?

Thanks

The search function comes in handy at times

Seems pretty straight forward to use your own equipment really.

No you don't have to use the one supplied.

I know how to extract my password and login details,I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if they have had better stability using other routers.

Hmmmm.

I am well aware that people have found a way to circumnavigate the security on the supplied router.

But it's likely, is it not, that Sky would insist you are on that router should you phone to report a problem and hey - for all I know it's in their T&Cs that you should be using it.

There are distinct advantages to an ISP in enforcing the CPE choice, though I can understand why people would not want to.

When mine switched over from nildram to sky today, my old DG834G could only manage 10Mbps with 6dB noise margin, whereas the DG834GT manages 15Mbps with 14-17 dB margin, so there can be a huge difference in changing router

If yours isn't great, perhaps take advantage of a shops money back guarantee, eg Argos?

why don't we let Sky's Terms and Conditions make up my mind huh:

It's your choice - but if you're encouraging others to use other equipment you are encouraging them to break the T&Cs they have entered into.

It really doesn't affect sky in any negative way to choose a better router for your needs, and if it gives people a better connection/better lan and or wireless lan ,then its definately a good idea to change your router if you feel confident in what you are doing.

Why are people so worried about breaking the T&C's by using their own routers? If you download copyrighted material via bittorrent or newsgroups you're in a far worse breach of the T&C's than using your own router.

I'd have thought it would have depended on how sky have configured their DSLAM's, as it should be backwards compatible, but they may have decided to prevent ADSL1 modems being used. I'd try for you but both of my routers offer ADSL2.

yes you can use ADSL1 routers, as i have before. but obvioulsy you wont get higher speeds. my adsl1 router syncs at max 8.2mb but it is a hell load more stable than the [censored] netgear one.

BTW - username is admin and password is sky.

I've got to agree with sifter on this one - If Sky customers don't know what is in their T&Cs to start with, its a rather silly move to sign up to something you haven't read.

The advice given to customers to use their own equipment, from how I perceive the posts, are given as a matter of opinion or suggestion - its true in saying that if someone isn't happy with the supplied router they have the ability to use another if it will server more to their purpose.

As for the abiguity about the term 'Broadband Box' used in the T&Cs with regards to the customer must connect using their Broadband Box; it will be wise for someone who is worried about breaking the T&Cs to see if the term 'Broadband Box' is not more clearly defined at the beginning of the T&Cs document.

All in all, we live in a free country; people can make suggestions (based solely on their own opinion) and other can make their own decisions and act on the suggestions or not - in the end people are responsible for their own actions!

If you have the free or mid package then these are ADSL1 and should pose no issues with using an ADSL1 router - however if you are on the max package, why would you wanna use an adsl1 modem on an adsl2 connection?

Unless I'm getting it wrong and the modem is ADSL2 or you are on free or mid package.

actually I don't.
The service provider is providing you with a CPE which it says you must use to connect to their network.
If there are problems with the CPE, and you don't use it, and don't tell them, then those problems just won't get fixed.

Broadband Box is a term that is defined at the beginning of the T&Cs I believe.

Erm, despite the fact I really shouldn't be bothered to argue the point; the problems are inherent in the router design and firmware, both of these are out of Sky's control. And anyway, by using a different router I can fix it myself. Instantly. Permanently. Efficiently. Why are you so upset about this concept?

just forget about it,
let it go,

Try reading and you might understand.
Sky currently purchase just one router, in VERY large quantities. IF they get to know that most people aren't having a good service, then it's in their interest to speak to the router manufacturer to rectify this. Replacing your router with the same chipset and firmware won't make a bit of difference.

But then as we've seen, not all people who swap their routers are going from [censored] to brilliant service - more like [censored] to slightly better.

I must say i feel we are being very harsh here on chewystuey's original answer.....

The original question was quite short and blunt (no offence to poster intended) and chewystuey replied with the correct and official answer, aimed at the majority of users of sky broadband. The user did not state they new how to get their username and password, nor whether they were willing to do this and breach the terms of their agreement.

If the user had suggested they knew they needed to flash their router etc to get their password and were asking for specific experiences, then they could have easily mentioned this in their original post, as they did not, i don't think we can expect chewystuey to admit his original post was incorrect, when it was not in the context of the original post.

I am using a Netgear DG834PN instead of Sky's DG834GT, because of connection constantly dropping, and the poor wireless performance of Sky's supplied router. The DG834PN performs much better, still drops, but much less frequently. However I understand the connection problem is with the exchange and the demand from Sky Broadband. In time Bt/Sky will sort this out, so for now re-boot your router at around 9.00 p.m when the service is busiest and allow your router to re-sync. Your new connection speed will be lower but stable. Oh and leave it on, and connected.

I've just recieved a mail from sky BB letting me know that sky max is now available now in my area. I've looked at previous post regarding the use of their own Netgear DG834GT router but i'll only switch if i can use my own router (Netgear DG834N). I rang sky BB to follow up the sky max service and explained my requirements and the chap said that it would not be a problem for customers to use their exsiting routers/modems to connect to sky bb if they already own one. I kept asking, saying that i would only switch if i could use my own and the chap kept confirming that, that would be OK to do. They will still supply there own on a self install though. Have sky BB changed their policy on this or was the chap misinformed. I know you can get round this problem by accessing the logn details but wondered if sky are aware that not everybody wants to use there supplied equipment.
Any help on this matter would be great.

Wouldn't be surprised if the CS was just saying that to get you to sign up - any change in policies would be reflected in the part of the T&Cs which mentions about using the supplied box!
