Hi
Talktalk have said you dont have a mac code when you get free broadband i trust this is bull can anyone confirm this please.
|
|
|
They take over both the line and broadband (for most), and do not require a MAC.

You don't need one when switching to TalkTalk LLU, but it's best if you ask for one anyway, as it usually doubles as initiating a notice period (usually 30 days or so) with your current ISP. If you do move to TalkTalk, be sure to double-check with your old ISP that they've shut down your account. MAC codes are only necessary when migrating from one ISP to another when they both use BT IPStream based products, of which TT's own LLU broadband is not.

TalkTalk don't provide free broadband , who has told you its free ?

Yes talk talk is now free broadband for 12 months ! Start from today 1st of June.
Cable 10Mb
|
|
|
|
well spotted , and not good news , as they are having problems provisioning new lines now , with out a rush of new customers .
|
|
|
Yeah, I will not sign up as I knew talktalk is rubbish according to my old mates telling me at work. Virgin media cable is better.
Cable 10Mb
|
|
|
Virgin also costs more ,and is only available in built up areas , where as TalkTalk has the largest LLU coverage of any LLU ISP and easily out performs resold BT budget offerings .
Will you be , becoming yet another one of the TalkTalk trolls that come on this forum posting negative stuff when your not even a customer , have never been a customer , and dont ever want to be a customer , so don't actually know or want to know what the TalkTalk service is like ? . ( its not perfect , im the first to admit that )

I HAVE been a customer , though I told TT to shove it after 5 days of clueless incompetence , so I have undergone the talk talk "experience". You cant build a stonewall around people and not let them them have their say, if he thinks talk talk sucks, then so be it and your neverending whingeing like a little girl wont change it one bit.

Did not think for one moment you had a lawn to mow . is there anything else in your life apart from your hate of TalkTalk ?
Edit: and just remind us how long ago it was that you where a TalkTalk customer .

i think the post in the members forum that i pasted in my true story thread suggests completely that it indeed has not and TT still suck every bit as badly as the 5 days of hell i stayed with them.
for goodness sake take off the blinkers , there are SO many TT users who wish they had never been conned into signing up by lying sales staff and are shackled into 18 month contracts.

Ooops , you seem to of done it again , yep you forgot about the millions of customers that are happy with the service .
That's kind of a big forget , but when your life is full of so much unfounded hate i guess 4.2 million is a easy number to forget . Guess that's why they call it blind hate .
Go mow a lawn , you will find it a much better use of your time , well better than reading through TalkTalk members support forum .

A customer of this ISP for 5 days and you are all over this forum like a rash. Your experience with this ISP is hardly vast so I cannot understand why you are so disparaging of those who have vastly more experience than you who found the service satisfactory, there is no justification to be so rude.
Your input seems way out of proportion to your experience. Generally our forums reflect the state of an ISP and where it is poor posters find us to say so. It does not need those who are unhappy to constantly keep posting nor in fact any member to constantly praise their ISP other than to provide information to a fellow member who may ask for your experience,
The OP's question was about a MAC so members should respond to that.

Things have improved? Sheesh. It's now been three weeks since my Dad started trying to get a MAC out of TalkTalk.
He spent another hour on Friday waiting to speak someone to find out why it still hadn't turned up. Eventually he gave up waiting.
The question he posed on the forum on Saturday still hasn't had an official response.
It's appalling. You'd have to be living in la-la land to defend TalkTalk's customer service. I don't think I've ever encountered a more inept and lackadaisical operation. It's like one of those horror stories you hear about on TV of the company that refuses to communicate with its customers. Maybe we need to hire a private investigator to track down their CEO and hound him with awkward questions?
My parents are pensioners and are now being forced to pay £10pcm more than they need to. Talk Talk CS is an inexcusable disgrace.

My congratulations to Sadoldman on your interventions on this forum. Like many people I look to the forums for useful comments and information, but get very dismayed by the few who do not contribute much of use but dominate with pointless sniping.
I am not against negative comments on Talk Talk provided they are constructive. I am currently checking the threads because my parents have lost their Internet connection with Pipex. As Talk Talk own Pipex and I suspect they have been affected as a result of action by Pipex/Talk Talk. I was hoping that other people who have experienced similar problems could provide practical advice. Unfortunately I have found very little useful advise!

The OCE's dont work weekends and I dont think they were all in on bank holiday Monday, they will have had a lot to go through on Tuesday to catch up so I imagine you will not be the only one who didn't get a reply, this is obviously frustrating for you but no one is perfect.
Did you bump the thread after 5 p.m. ?

TalkTalk are meant to give you your MAC within five working days , weekends and bank holidays do not count as working days .
If they don't provide with in 5 working days i do believe they are in breach of some code of conduct all ISP have to agree to , so remind them of that and you will hopefully be given it then and there .

He finally got a PM. I'd better make sure he knows as otherwise he might miss it. Hopefully this will put an end to the saga. OTOH if it means a telephone call it probably won't. CS appear to have a policy of not answering at the moment.

My advice to anyone who experiences great difficulty in obtaining a MAC (they fail to provide it within the 5 working day time frame) then don't bother phoning them any more, ring ofcom they will usually send them a nice e-mail telling them to get finger out of their a** and send you a MAC pronto, which usually does the trick, and if this happens to lots of people ofcom may use their power to fine the isp, upto 10% of their annual turnover , but as far as i know that would be a first
|
|
|
We'll see. The PM was apparently a request to confirm the telephone number. I don't really see why they need that. You have to have provided that information to sign up for the forum in the first place. Oh well - hopefully PMs are dealt with more quickly.

I can totally understand your dads frustration , but it would seem foolishly , TalkTalk are more concerned with getting new customers than looking after the ones they already have .
Putting up the price of there IPstream product whilst unbundling your fathers exchange , and then not moving him will and has lost them a customer and understandably .
But i don't see BT as any better than TalkTalk , its a bit like out of the frying pan and into the fire .
As you dad already as a active ADSL connection he can migrate to one of the many 1 month rolling contract premium ISP , which is much better than the 18month rolling contract he is just about to tie him self into .
Even Plusnet a BT owned company would be a better contractual choice than the 18 month rolling contract BT offer new customers .
If he is going to stay on BT infrastructure he should reap the rewards , and that would be the freedom to move when he wants and not when his contract is up .

I dont know how much you are about to pay for the BT service but before signing up I would have a look at IDNet my X - ISP, a great (small) ISP with a rolling one month contract and free customer service in the U.K (though you are never likely to need it)
I used to get 30GB allowance (download only counted) for £25 and speeds were always high and gaming ping always low, definitely worth a look.

Sadly not my call. He likes his independence and although I've offered to pay for the connection he'd rather do it all himself. He's a very light user so any ISP will do.He's been happy with TT and could have continued to be if only they hadn't suddenly turned on him this year.
Okay so I don't think it was malicious but it's been one thing after another since February and unfortunately that meant dealing with Customer Services. The unbundling of his exchange bypassing him just felt like a final slap in the face.
I think he's too old and wise to ever think of BT the way he thought of TT.
|
|
|
|
Perhaps it's a case of lesson learned from the "young wide boys" and now let's return to that "stalwart of British companies". It's surprising how many people, particularly older ones, believe that because of the name, BTi must be a good service.
Against all my advice, one of my brothers has made the same mistake of using such reasoning after being stung by TT.
|
|
|
|
i'm sorry but i would not let any member of my family enter into a 18 month contract unnecessarily , independent or not .
There is a real chance he could be happy if his connection works , but if he has to phone BT he will find another Indian call centre at the end of the line , that's not much , if any better than the TalkTalk one he is just about to leave .
there is also no option of a support forum with BT ( that I'm aware of )
|
|
|
|
I think that there is a forum but all the same, BTi is one to avoid.
|
|
|
i'm sorry but i would not let any member of my family enter into a 18 month contract unnecessarily , independent or not . Not my choice. I'd like to help but I respect his independence. In any case an occasional girlfriend of mine has a connection with BT and it works fine. I had to call their support last year because of a problem and it was sorted out well enough even though I wasn't the account holder.
So yeah - I'd have preferred he go with Plusnet but I think BT are going to be better than TT. My experience of BT support and sales is that they are efficient and effective. TT are neither - just a bunch of indifferent clowns and time wasters.
|
|
|
well my experience of BT are they cost more than TalkTalk LLU and the support is no better .
And as already said , i would not let any family member enter into a long and in all honesty a deceitful contract ( more so then TalkTalk contract ) .
18 month rolling , means you have a small window of cancellation at the end of your 18 months .
If you don't cancel in that small window of opportunity , you in another 18 months .
You really do need to step up to the plate and get of the fence with regards to what choice your father is making , as it really is a very bad choice and i personally at odds how he could make a worse choice considering he is out of contract and holding a MAC and has the opportunity to be free from draconian contract terms and have better support and probably a better connection to boot if given the right information by a close family member (that's you if your not sure ). Not my choice. I'd like to help but I respect his independence. would you just sit back also if your dad was being frog marched down to his cash point every day by a cowboy builder ? you can still respect his independence but still give him the information he needs to make good choices .

Not my choice. I'd like to help but I respect his independence.
So you will happily let him jump from the frying pan into the fire, i think he would respect you more if you sat him down and explained the pitfalls rather than let him sign up to an 18 month contract with a company that could be worse than the one he has just left, I think you have your priorities a little mixed up.

If my Father was as independent as his I would still explain the points i made in my last post to him, at least then I would not feel guilty if the move to BT turns out to be a disaster, if he doesn't want to that's his call.

You really do need to step up to the plate and get of the fence with regards to what choice your father is making , as it really is a very bad choice I'm 43. He's 83. Don't presume to advise me on my relationship with my parents. He doesn't need or want me to run his life and I wouldn't disrespect him by trying to.
I also have nearly a decade's experience of broadband and have been a member of this forum since 2002. Don't try and scare me with stories about BTi. I used them for two years when I had Home Highway and they were called BT Open World - I still have a BT line for my telephone.
They are not as bad as you and Mr. 'Fanboi' Hackett make out. The biggest difference is that although they are a PITA they don't try to disguise the fact like TT. With BT you know what you're dealing with.
TT try to make out they're a cuddly, friendly company then they stab you in the back and treat you like something found on the bottom of their shoe. At least BT make it clear from the start that you are a number and a source of money right from the off.

Truth is you have already advised your father that BTi is a good option , that's obvious by your attempts to turn this thread into a BT vs TalkTalk .
What the hell have you been doing on this forum for 8 years if you still don't get that resold BT with anything more than a 1 month contract is bad !
I'm interested in why somebody that says they have a decade of broadband experience can not see a 18 month rolling contract as a very good reason not to sign with BT with out even getting into a debate about any of the other pros and cons

My preferred option (and his) would be TT LLU but unfortunately they are unable to offer him that. That leaves him paying £15pcm more per month than other options. Combined with bad customer service and what would you do?
I tried to get him to go Plusnet but BTi will be adequate. Heck even Tiscali of old would have been adequate for him. All he needs is the ability to pull email from the server once a day and do a bit of online shopping once in a blue moon.

18 month rolling contract , 18 month rolling contract , 18 month rolling contract , 18 month rolling contract . Huh? Why do I have to acknowledge it to you. No-one else asks me to regurgitate their posts to confirm understanding. Come to that what is wrong with you? Why are you continually harping on about BTi?
They aren't my preferred ISP (I've written many times that I'd have preferred him to go with Plusnet). I haven't used BTi myself for several years (the last time was back when I had Home Highway).
In short the only person here who seems to have a 'thing' for BTi is you. Why don't you just give it a rest. If you want to keep bashing BTi then go to their forums and do it. I don't think anyone here wants to have you keep bleating on about them.
The only comment I've made is that I think their Customer Service is likely to be no worse than TT's. I suspect their internet service will not be as good. Unfortunately my Dad simply won't pay more than he absolutely has to for broadband. I can understand why given how little he uses it. Tbh he drives me mad. He'll happily wait an hour or more for the next BBC News rather than open the laptop within arms reach and surf to a news site.
But there you have it. Given how little he wants from a connection anyone will do and right now BTi are the cheapest. Or at least they are because TT won't/can't unbundle his line. The main reason I'm annoyed at TT is because their customer service has robbed him of the opportunity to get a damn good service for a price he is prepared to pay. It's like turning up at the bes restaurant in town only to be told that you can't go in because they overbooked and they are turning away regular customers in order to just serve new ones.
If TT could contact my Dad and offer to unbundle the line he would stop the migration. I'd be happy because then I'd know that when I visited them I'd have a reliable and decent connection. I don't think BTi will be a disaster but, yes, I would prefer he had TT.

Heh, I don't think they are that bad. I know a few people using them and they seem to do okay. I wouldn't trust them myself but there's really so very little he does with the internet. In fact he could almost get by on dial-up. I'll confess to a degree of self-interest here. I'm the one needs BB at their house because when I visit them for a week it's my sanity at risk.
I'm now actually glad that we tried to help his neighbour out last year. His neighbour only has dial-up and I was shocked to see just how bad that is for today's web. As my Dad was also there I think he realised it was a none-starter and that at least means he isn't dropping BB completely.
But, alas, he won't let me pay and has gone with the cheapest service, 18-month contract and all. Parent's eh? You can't live with them(*) and you can't live without them.
(*)Well I sure can't. Moving 200 miles away was the best thing I ever did
|
|
|
.... But, alas, he won't let me pay and has gone with the cheapest service...
No thoughts one way or another here but is BTi really the cheapest service available? I'm not up on costs but I would be surprised if it is.
Does your dad realise that the headline price increases quite dramatically after a few months?
As an aside, I still attend to "George" who's independent but very set in his ways. He's an 87 year old ex miner with a temper like a rabid terrier if he thinks he's being ripped off. TalkTalk, his former provider, experienced his "straight talking" first hand after supplying a fixed 2M connection for years whilst insisting he was getting 6M down. They beat a very hasty retreat as have others who have dared to cross him.
He's used BTi for a few years now and he hasn't got a bad word to say about the service. He likes to think he's technologically advanced and uses Messenger etc with his webcam but I'd bet his usage patterns aren't really that dissimilar to your dad's.

Its not just BTi i have a beef with, its any ISP that wants you to sign a long contract when migrating between resold BT products .
the only time i think its ok to sign a contract is when its a new connection and there are costs to recoup by the ISP .
But that aside i feel 18 month rolling contracts are unethical and immoral and should be avoided at all costs .
Dam right i will try my absolute hardest to stop any body from signing any contract over a one month rolling when migrating between resold BT products , as there is simply no need to .
I find it very hard to believe BT are the cheapest option , at least not for a new connection , for retention deals maybe .
Edit: also if your dad ties him self to BT for 18 months , there is no way he can then move to TalkTalk when and if capacity become available . That could happen this month or next year ( who knows )
