"Hello", This may not be the correct section to post this enquiry in [?] - But it is about My Computer which is running Windows 7 Home Premium:
Please excuse My lack of correct Computer Terminology - I am a complete `Novice` in Computing having come to it at a very late Age - ALL that I have taught Myself to do is basically Browsing the Internet and Emailing.
This Problem has recently started - I have been using My Computer for about 3 Years and I am sure that I have not done anything that would have changed any `Settings` regarding the Computer and Router connections etc.
When My Computer tries to Start Up it goes through the usual process after I enter My Password and the Screen shows all of the Program Icons.
BUT - on the Broadband / Internet Access Icon on the Bottom of the Screen there is the circular / turning display that you usually get for a couple of Seconds when the Computer is connecting to the Router / Internet Access - this does not ever show the Internet Access has been established.
This Stops any use of the Computer - including the Restart facility - I have had to actually Turn Off the Computer by turning off the Power - obviously I know that this is NOT a desirable situation to be in.
The Computer and Router are connected with an Ethernet Cable - No wireless access is used.
I decided to try the Start Up process with the Router Turned Off - the Computer Started Up correctly.
When I then Turned On the Router after perhaps 30 Seconds the Broadband / Internet Access Icon showed that Internet Access had been established - I am assuming that the approximately 30 Seconds wait was mainly due to the Router `Booting Up`.
I have established that the Computer will NOT Start Up correctly with the Router turned On - I have to ensure that the Router is OFF - Turn On the Computer and after it Starts Up I then Turn On the Router which then establishes the Internet Connection after it `Boots Up`.
I have used the Router by connecting a Laptop to the Ethernet Cable - the Laptop started up correctly - which I assume showed that this is NOT a Router Problem ?
Although I know that I have NOT altered any `Settings` for the Computer and Router could it be that something has changed and is Stopping the Internet Accessing - which in turn Stops the Computer from Starting Up ?
I cannot quite understand why the Internet Access / Router Accessing would Stop the Computer from being used - including not even being able to Restart or Shut Down ?
I would really appreciate any suggestions Please - although I may not be Computer Literate enough to answer Technical Questions - I will try to carry out any suggestions - could these be `Step by Step` Instructions Please.
I know that I may just have to Live With this situation - as anything `Too Technical` - Or something where a slight error by ME could compromise the Computer should NOT be attempted by Me because of My lack of knowledge in Computing.
Regards,
Chris

This one's difficult diagnose, plus I dont use Windows 7 as my old software I use all the time doesn't run properly on it.
My instinct says it could be a microsoft update which has changed the driver for one of there own generic versions, and it's waiting for a IPv6 address. This is only a guess.
So the usual procedure is to find out who made the motherboard/ethernet controller, download and install the latest driver from the manufacturer.

Chris,
If you go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings > right click and then select Disable can you then shut down the Win7 pc normally with the router still powered on? If so this might suggest that there is a conflict between the enabled network adapter and the operating system...

"Hello wanapoo",
Thanks very much for your message and suggestion - I have looked at the Microsoft Updates History for My Computer - I realise that the description for an Update might NOT refer to something that it will actually affect - But I don`t think that I ever read about any Update that concerned the Internet Accessing for My Computer / Windows 7.
Updates are ONLY Downloaded after I view the items and then Download and Install them manually - I don`t have Automatic Updating enabled.
I hope that You won`t mind if I wait to see if there are any further suggestions before carrying out what You suggested about the Driver - Before that I will need to know What exactly would I be looking for on the ACER Downloads website ?
I realise that I would be looking for specifically for a Driver for My Computer Model which is the ACER ASPIRE X3810 - BUT - What would the Driver that You suggested be called ?
Can I take it that this could actually cause further problems on My Computer IF I was to accidentally choose / Download the wrong Driver - ?
My problem would be how to be CERTAIN that I was Downloading the right one.
Thanks for your help with this - I really appreciate it.
Regards,
Chris

"Hello4M2",
Thanks for your message and suggestion - Before I carry out what You described can I please clarify something:
When I start up the Computer with the Router turned OFF the Computer starts up `As Normal` - I then turn On the Router and after the Router `Boot Up` [Approx. 30 Seconds] I then see that I have Internet Access and can use My Computer as normal.
I can Shut Down the Computer with the Router still Turned On and I have done this several times to check this.
BUT I usually now Turn OFF the Router before I Shut Down the Computer JUST so that it will be OFF when I turn On the Computer the next time - otherwise I would have the problem about the Computer NOT Starting Up correctly and NOT being able to Shut Down or Restart without turning Off the Power.
As I CAN already Shut Down the Computer with the Router ON - I wanted to ask You about what You suggested - Before carrying out that procedure.
Thank You very much for your Help with this - I really appreciate it.
Regards,
Chris

Can you substitute the ethernet cable for another one?
No LAN driver is required for the X3810 - It's provided by the OS itself. Open the "Device Manager" and see if you can "Roll Back" the current driver.

When this happens. what do you get when you type
ipconfig /all
in a Command Prompt? Hide your name!
Is it any diff from when it doesn't happen?
In that Network and Sharing Center > Adapter settings that 4M2 suggested, click on Properties. Then highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
Which of Obtain IP Addy Auto or Use the Following IP Addy is ticked?

Turning router off while PC on has same effect as Disabling the Network Adapter as 4M2 suggested. He was just trying to help you avoid powering OFF using Power Button when PC has got into a fix.

"Hello XRaySpex",
Thanks for explaining that - even after reading your explanation I could not see that in what He wrote - I understood the message to be asking whether I could Shut Down the Computer with the Router still turned ON.
I THOUGHT that He was suggesting that I try something which would enable Me to `Do` something that I can already `Do` - I.E. Shut Down the Computer with the Router turned On - - that is why I asked Him about this.
I have now realised that He was suggesting that I change a Setting and see if the Computer would Shut Down with the Router still turned ON - Should I still try this ?
I have tried turning Off the Router when this Computer `Not Responding` Problem exists - I THOUGHT that this would mean that the Computer would then Respond to either Restart or Shut Down - BUT it did NOT - I had to Power Off the Computer.
Thanks for your message.
Regards,
Chris

"Hello again XRaySpex",
Sorry that I did not see this Post from You before the other one which I just replied to - I went to your other Post via an Email `Link` - so I saw that first.
When the Computer will NOT Start Up and the Internet Access Icon has the Circular / Turning display in front of it I cannot `Do` anything at all on the Computer - Including accessing the Start Menu to Type anything - the Computer is completely Unresponsive.
Regarding the Internet Connection Properties Display - I could NOT see ANY of the things that You asked if they were Ticked - I have taken a Screenshot but i did not know that I could NOT Post that on here [?].
While I was into the Network and Sharing Centre I used the Troubleshooter - although when the Router is turned On after the Computer has correctly started up ALL seems O.K. - I wondered if the Troubleshooter would find any Adapter Problems - It did Not.
Thanks again.
Regards,
Chris

Hello XRaySpex",
When I type what You suggested into the `Search Programs and Files` Box and I Allow this - a Black Box Displays for not even half a second - probably much less time - making it impossible to View / Read.
Is there a process of how to View what I am guessing MAY have been Saved somewhere on My Computer ?

Chris

The Command Prompt program is very important for diagnosing Windows; you should get to know it.
Either look in your Start Programs menu for 'Command Prompt' or type
cmd
in the Start Run box.
EDIT: Search is a very clumsy and error prone way of finding programs.
You don't need to keep giving salutations ; keep it to the point.

"Hello",
I like to be Polite - although I can only Type with ONE Finger and it would be quicker / easier to NOT say Hello and use the persons User Name - I like to be Polite in addressing People who are taking time to Help Me - I know that You are trying to be helpful in saving Me time etc. and I appreciate your comment - Thanks.
When I referred to the Search Programs and Files Box - I believe that this is what You mean when you write the `Start Run Box` - in that Box - which I did not know the correct Name for - what I wrote is temporarily displayed until You Start to Type into it - that is why I wrote those words as to describe the Box that is accessed by clicking onto the Start Button.
I THINK that this is the Box that You mean.
In My `All Programs` Menu - Command Prompt is not showing.
I would really like to know more about what You suggested regarding Command Prompt and I will research this - BUT could You guide Me regarding seeing what You suggested here re. what I typed into the Start Run Box ?
I WAS Finding Command Prompt - and clicking to Open it - at that point the Black Box Flashed onto the Screen - there was NO WAy to be able to Read it - Has it been Saved somewhere ?
Regards,
Chris

Is this where You would suggest that I type what You suggested ?

Yes. Type ipconfig /all.

Sorry to jump in, Chrismur, follow this instructions to get to where XRaySpex is asking!
1.Click the Start button and in the box that appears at the bottom type cmd
2.A black icon and cmd will appear right click it and then choose Run as administrator, the user accounts control will ask for permission, click Yes, the command prompt window will display ( white letters on a black background)
3.Where it says c:\windows\system32>type on the flashing cursor the following; ipconfig /all
Dont forget there is a space between the g and the forward slash/
4. Press Enter
5.All the network configuration will be displayed, which is what XRaySpex is asking you to do twice, once when you start the pc with the router connected and once when you start the pc with the router disconnected, to see if there is any difference on the statistics!
6. You can maximise the command prompt window to read it better.
7. When finished, close the window by clicking on the X at the top right hand corner as with all windows.
8. You can expect to see something similar to this;

Thank You very much for the detailed Instructions - really appreciated.
However this Cannot be carried out with Starting the Computer with the Router Connected and Turned On - that is when the Problem exists - The Computer does NOT Start Up and then is completely Unresponsive.
Turning Off the Router does NOT [Surprisingly to Me] then allow the Computer to complete the Start Up process - I would have thought that it would have but No - I then have to Power Off the Computer - NOT something that I want to keep doing.
Thanks for your help.

looks like you are doing some really advanced diagnostics now - best of luck

Chris,
I'm not remotely qualified in being able to help with your pc problem, I'm just helping with the basics of how to get the information rquested and how to copy and paste it here in the forum.
To copy the command prompt screen;
1. First open note pad
2. Go to the command prompt screen and right click in it
3. Click select all on the menu that appears
4. Go to Note pad and right click in it
5. Click paste
6. Name and save the text document in a folder you will remember.
You may be asked by XRaySpex to copy the details and post to see it. Which you can then do by copy and paste.
Good luck.

Does the pc boot with the adapter disabled and the router powered on? Better to do tests by shutting down and restarting the pc than powering off the router too frequently

Thanks for the Information - I will try this to learn the process Correctly.-
I did manage to Copy and Paste the Results om here - BUT only after a combination of `Mark` - `Copy` etc. - basically process `Unknown` !
But You might have been writing your Post when I managed to Post the Results of the Diagnostics on here.

Um! That all looks good!
Need to see same when PC can't connect but we can't cuz PC frozen.
Does problem also occur when PC started with router ON, but router disconned from phone socket?
Does problem also occur when PC started in Safe Mode with Networking (press F8 repeatedly during initial boot when you have a blank screen) with router ON?
Look in the router's Web interface for its DHCP section. What does it say?
When problem occurs, do you have another PC to look at router's Web interface for a section like Local Network or Connected Devices that shows what devices are connected to router and their IP addys?
I'm clutching at straws LOL!

"Hello",
I will try this Tomorrow [Now 01:33 Hrs] - I don`t turn off the Power TO the Router I just Turn it Off by using the Power Button - is that the same thing ?
What worries Me more is that I am having to Power Off the Computer Too Often - I.E. I don't think powering off PC using the Power Button is much risk if the PC is completely locked and not doing anything (and you have no choice). It's only a problem when this is used while the PC is active and might be writing to its disk, so causing potential disk corruption. You could keep an eye on the Disk light before doing it.
Have you ever left the PC in its frozen state for a long time to see if it ever recovers? BUT unlike many People who are Computer Literate I would NOT be able to `Repair` anything that was any more complicated than `Restore to previously known Good Configuration` ! That's more than I've ever done!

I WISH I had mastered it !
I mentioned that I tried `Mark` - `Copy` etc. - before `Accidentally` being able to Paste the Results on here - I had already tried Copy and Paste without success before I asked how to get the Results Posted here.
I will practice scopio`s instructions to try and get to know how to Copy and Use the Results from Command Prompt - I assume that there is a reason why `Copy & Paste` does not work on the Command Prompt Results display ?

"Hello",
I am always worried that because the Computer seems to have NOT Started Up completely - Because of the described problem - that I am Powering Off before the Computer has Started Up and that this will then cause a further problem when Powered Off and then Started Up using the `Computer failed to correctly Shut Down` [words close to that] Start Up process.
Computer failed to correctly Shut Down suggests to Me that perhaps it Failed to correctly Start Up - although I know that this does NOT necessarily follow.
I have left the Computer `Frozen` in the state that I previously described for Hours - just to see IF the Internet Accessing / Start Up problem EVER completed - it did not.
Where would I find the Disk Light - so that I could see if the Computer was writing to a Dosk before Poering it Off ?
Thanks.
Chris

Point at text
Right Click
Mark
Highlight desired text by spreading cursor with L button down

Point at your post here
Right Click
Paste
Done!
Command Prompt is based on the old DOS which did not have Copy-and-Paste so they built this on top of it.

Win7 is a mule when it comes to networking issues
I don`t turn off the Power TO the Router I just Turn it Off by using the Power Button - is that the same thing ? Yep, as far as I know, both result in a cold restart.
Numerous normal shut downs and restarts of the pc shouldn't cause any problems, Win7 normally allows background processes to cease before shutting down, unless you force a shut down which is best avoided.

Hello - I did mention in an earlier Post that I have tried the Router by using a Laptop which is also using Windows 7 Home Premium - albeit that Laptops use the `64 Bit` version [ My PC has the 32 Bit version] - the Laptop started up as normal - no problem at all.
I know that this has become quite a Long Winded Subject - I am not stating that You should have seen My comment about using the Laptop - that would be easy to miss with all that has been written about this problem.
Thanks for the suggestion - I appreciate your interest and Help.

Just take it one step at a time!
Point at text
Right Click
Mark
Highlight desired text by spreading cursor with L button down
<Return>
Point at your post here
Right Click
Paste
Done!
Command Prompt is based on the old DOS which did not have Copy-and-Paste so they built this on top of it.
Thanks - I was highlighting the Text first - as You would do in Copy & Paste - then clicking onto `Mark` etc.
When I accidentally got it right I must have highlighted the Text again after clicking on `Mark` - then going back to the Forum I would have positioned the Curser / Type Start point and then Clicked onto `Paste`.
Thanks again,
Chris

Where would I find the Disk Light Usually near the Power Button. It's a blue flashing LED on mine. Look in the handbook.
I have NO obvious Lights on My Acer Computer - other than the Power On Light - I will look in the Handbook [Downloaded] when I get time - But I definitely don`t have any Light that illuminates at certain times / because of certain processes running - I would have noticed this in the 3 Years that I have had the Computer.
Thanks,
Chris

Win7 is a mule when it comes to networking issues
I don`t turn off the Power TO the Router I just Turn it Off by using the Power Button - is that the same thing ? Yep, as far as I know, both result in a cold restart.
Numerous normal shut downs and restarts of the pc shouldn't cause any problems, Win7 normally allows background processes to cease before shutting down, unless you force a shut down which is best avoided.
Thanks - for your answer about the Turning Off of the Router.
Regarding the Computer I am describing having to Power OffI to Shut Down - because the Computer `Freezes` and I cannot either Restart or Shutdown normally - that is what worries Me - not Restarting or normal Shutdowns.
When using the Computer in the past - seemingly working correctly - I have been tempted in the past to Select `Force Shutdown` when the Shutdown process seemed to be delayed for some reason - I did not use this and I will remember to NOT use it unless Absolutely Necessary.
Thanks again,
Chris

It does sound like a problem with the network driver or the windows startup process (there is a remote possibility that the network is trying to start up before something that it relies upon and causing the PC to lock up but this is difficult to diagnose via forums).
I do have one suggestion. Rather than keep powering the router on/off you will find the network cable that goes from the router to the back of the PC is a better option. Try unplugging the network cable and leaving the router turned on. Once the PC has started up then plug the network cable back in (you could actually unplug it from either end so if the router is easier to get at then unplug the network from that end). This "should" have the same effect as powering off the router as far as the PC is concerned.
The reason I suggest this is regularly turning routers off when testing is not generally a good idea whereas unplugging the network cable is far better (just be careful with the little but of plastic that holds the cable into the socket as they have a tendency to snap off if you aren't a little gentle with them).

ian72,
Removing the ethernet cable is a good idea for all the reasons that you mentioned, i.e. same effect as powering off the router etc. But I wanted to establish whether the pc would boot and shut down normally with the network adapter disabled from the Win7 GUI whilst the router was powered on. This being the next stage in the diagnosis since the OP has established that a network connection is causing problems with the OS.
|
|
|
|
I wasn't disagreeing with your advice just suggesting that powering router down is a bad idea with the alternative just being unplugging the cable - testing with the network adapter disabled is a good move as well...

Many routers have a setting Connection Type set to Always On. Try it with ON Demand / Trigger by Traffic.

There appears to be a problem with driver failing to load properly. Or with ethernet chip.
Go to Control panel and view by small icons
Find Device Manager and click. Are there any yellow ? marks or red X on network adaptors list.
If No
If Yes Post here
Can you connect to router by wireless
Obtain PCI Adaptor Ethernet Adaptor from ebay(£2.80 delivered), in windows 7 they will be plug and play.
In control panel find Network and sharing. find Change adaptor settings down left
Right click on Local Area Connection and disable.
Shut down computer and connect ethernet cable to PCI card
Start PC and advise.

"Hello Ian72",
Thanks for your suggestion - I will definitely unplug the Ethernet Cable when I need to from now on - although this will mean having to remember to do this every time the Computer is turned OFF - and I hope that other members of My Family don`t forget this.
I had thought of this in the past but because the back of the Computer and the Router location are quite `inaccessible` I decided against this.
I have now used a short Ethernet Cable and an Ethernet Cable `Coupling` which means that I can easily unplug the Ethernet Cable from the Coupling in a position that I can reach.
I did try some of the previous suggestions and I will Post which ones I tried in the next Post.
Thanks again.

"Hello",
The Router is not Wireless enabled as far as I know - it was never set up for Wireless Connections - Ethernet Cable only.
Regarding the Network Adaptor - I went into the Device Manager and found that it is showing as Working Correctly.

Thanks for the suggestion - unfortunately I don`t even know How / Where to find the Router`s Settings section - I can`t even find any reference to the Router anywhere on My Computer.
I realise that I need to have the exact Router details / Model Number etc. to ensure that I carry out any Settings alteration - But I thought that I would be able to find the Router on My Computer.
Sorry that My lack of knowledge in Computing is making helping Me much more difficult.

You get into your router via your Internet Browser using an address like http://192.168.0.1.
Which router? Look in here for your router or similar: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php and then scratch around for a Settings section.

Thanks for the suggestions - I have tried some of them:
The problem is the same when the PC is started up with the Router On but disconnected from the Phone Socket.
When I Start Up the Computer using Safe Mode with Networking and the Router is turned On the Computer goes through the process - up to the Password point - then after I enter the Password the screen icons etc. display and at this point the circular display over the Network Icon [bottom bar on screen] shows - from this point the Computer is unresponsive and although I have left it like this previously for Hours - nothing further happens - I have had to Power Off previously but now I disconnect the Ethernet Cable.
This does NOT immediately allow the Computer to complete the Start Up process - BUT - it enables Me to Restart the PC and it will then Start Up correctly [Ethernet Cable disconnected].
I mentioned in a previous Post - I have no idea how to access the Router`s Web Interface - Sorry about this - could You advise Me on that - Thanks.
I could connect another Ethernet Cable and a Laptop to the Router - IF I knew what I was doing this to achieve - could You please explain - Thanks.

Thanks for the Link to Intel Driver `Checker` etc. - I did use this and there were 3 Drivers that were highlighted - a Graphics Driver - an Audio Driver and a Networking Driver BUT - I was seeing the same information about all of them:
Basically they were showing as NOT Intel Original Drivers - BUT this was described as possibly because the Computer Manufacturer had added to them / altered them slightly to suit the requirements of the Computer.
The information was basically informing Me that these may well be the Intel Drivers - check this with your Computer Manufacturer - from trying to ask ACER about something in the past this would NOT be possible !
There were NO Updates showing - obviously I assume because the `Update Checker` could NOT identify whether these were Intel Drivers or not [?].
I have never [knowingly] Downloaded or Updated ANY Intel Drivers - and although I am an absolute beginner in Computing that is more of a reason why I would NEVER have wanted to Alter anything that was identified as `INTEL` related - out of FEAR of ruining the Computer.
So I have to assume that the Drivers are the Original and that no Updates are available.
Thanks for trying to help Me.

I looked on the website - My Router is supplied by SKY - the address looks like it is exactly what You gave as the example - 192.168.0.1
There were 2 Netgear Routers - as I was NOT going to alter anything until I obtained the Exact Model Number from the Router which is a bit inaccessible right now I just tried to access the 192.168.0.1 Address - hopefully showing the Netgear Routers details [?] - I immediately received the Internet Explorer message Cannot Access Website - words to that effect.
I then tried to Troubleshoot this and received the information that the Address is active but cannot be connected to - I obviously have NO idea why this is ?
It would not have mattered which Router [of 2 Netgear Models] that I had regarding getting the details of either - Internet Explorer could NOT Connect to the `Address` - 192.168.0.1
I did try this more than once - 3 times in fact.
I also read a section on that website about Routers that `Do not give statistics` - I wondered if Mine was one of these ?
If so I would not really want to go through the process that was suggested on the website about that - unless absolutely necessary - which I hope will not be.
Sorry for more complications !

Probably best if you get a pci network interface card as flippery suggested earlier in this thread, if you have a spare pci slot on the motherboard, for the time being - something like this will do http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-Gigabit-Interface-TG...
Disable your current adapter, shut down the pc, stick the new pci network card in, attach the ethernet cable to the new network card with the router powered on and boot the pc. Hopefully Win7 will be happy with that

My Router is supplied by SKY - the address looks like it is exactly what You gave as the example - 192.168.0.1 Then you should be able to connect to it. It's the same for all Sky routers: Router login.
Specific login which allows you to access information about your router and connection via the router web interface at http://192.168.0.1. This is the same for all sky customers and by default the username = "admin", password = "sky". Try clicking on the embedded link.

Anyway we are not (yet) talking about Statistics, which are measures of how the line is behaving, but about the router's initial configured Settings which must be there for the router to connect in the 1st place.

I described exactly what happened - do You have any idea of what might try next regarding what happened when I could not get Internet Explorer to connect to the `Address` when clicking onto it on the website that You gave Me the Link to - ?
When I type it into My Browser I obviously get the Google Results - probably Hundreds of Thousands of results regarding 192.168.0.1[I did not notice the number]
I then realised that I should have been typing it as: http://www.192.168.0.1 [I think ?]
This was also NOT effective and I managed to find out these details:

I really dont know what are doing.
You are not doing a google search, forget google. You were meant to type EXACTLY what I said into the address bar of your browser. And I never said there was "www." in it.
Now just click on this http://192.168.0.1

Of course, other common IPs for routers may be :
http://192.168.1.1
http://192.168.1.254
Worth trying if the one you suggested is not working.

According to the ipconfig /all results he posted earlier, the default gateway is
192.168.0.1 so that is the address he should be typing into the address bar.
To the OP please try again.
Look up towards the top of the screen and you should see something like
http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/reply/windo.....
replace this with 192.168.0.1 That is a zero not a capital O.
It should display the router login page or at least a link which allows you to log in. Try the username and password that were indicated earlier.
Good luck
|
|
|
|
Ooos. Forgot the ipconfig had been run - came back after a few days and didn't reread all the previous posts.
As an addition it might be useful for the OP to go to the command prompt again and try :
ping 192.168.0.1
It obviously should get replys but if for any reason it does not that might show something weird going on.
I forget, has anyone suggested replacing the network cable from PC to router with a completely different one in case there is a break causing some sort of issue (shouldn't be but getting desparate here).

I'm leaning more towards a driver problem. The link earlier in this thread for Intel drivers should be used to detect current drivers.

I'm leaning more towards a driver problem. The link earlier in this thread for Intel drivers should be used to detect current drivers. .
Looked at the Acer website. The Lan drivers on windows 7 are microsoft.
The OP has used Imtel website and there are no updates
It looks like OP is reluctant to install anything for fear of causing problems, which I can understand.
Looks to be a conflict problem rather than driver, as the computer will start when router disconnected. Router will connect to computer after start up but will then not disconnect.
Both the computer and broadband router have wireless access but not used by OP, This would be the easiest way to proceed as it will not affect the computer in any way if unsuccessful,
The conflict could be for a number of reason. The first question I would ask is when was Defragmentation implemented by OP.
