hi ppl, ever since i could get fibre i was with sky on there unlimited package.......
39999 up 10000 down, that was great i thought......anyways BT offered me a great deal last feb on their infinity 2 package. promised 61-80 down and 20 up......well never had that, got 59/19.5 till a few weeks ago....my speed suddenly dropped 10 meg and every day it resynced slower and slower till i had to call BT, i was now getting 39/7.....got a new Hub next day....back up to 56/14 straight away......for 5hrs.....then i lost bt for 28hrs, when it did come back on i had horrendous lag with online gaming and again the hub would resync itself, another call to BT and an engineer visit...checked all wiring everything great, he went onto his laptop.....10 mins later told me the dlm had activated again and it was rest and i now had 63.5/19.8. brilliant....for a week, when my wifi stopped completely, would not work with laptop phone or tablet.....resetting it helped for an hour then boom back to square one....another call to BT and another hub (now on my 5th hub 5) and my speed is sti not back to where it should be.......they cant find anything wrong on the line......what can i do? hub has resynced every day and is currently 53/16

Consider dumping the HH5 for an Openreach VDSL2 modem and a router of your own choice.
The HH5 gives people more problems than the less exciting but apparently very dependable Sky Hubs.

im sure i still have that openreach modem from my sky fibre installation......gave my sky hub away tho....would i need to have a vdsl router?

Plug it into the phone and into the red socket on the HH5, it will just work and should be better.
so just so i get this right.......from fibre socket to modem into red on hh5?
Yes, fibre socket to DSL on the modem, modem LAN1 to red WAN on the HH5.

cool, will sort this out and give it a try......thankyou...
Good luck
ok ive done that.....its working....but i cant access speed from router stats?
No, the modem has the stats and you're not using the modem on the HH5. The OR modem may be unlocked to get the stats...
ok......how do i do that?
You can always try a speedtest... http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html
Or use the BT speedtest to get your IP profile which is calculated from your sync speed www.speedtest.btwholesale.com
Or use this https://windows.mouselike.org/be/index.asp?DoAction=...
ok......how do i do that? Depends on the modem. Which one is it, there's a label on the bottom?
ran the btwholesale test earlier, kept getting an error preventing me from getting the info i need..........can only try in a few hours....

Ah, unlucky. I believe you have to make a UART connection to unlock that. https://hackingecibfocusv2fubirevb.wordpress.com/201...

strange since when my sky hub was connected to that modem i could access my stats......
I think Sky got the stats from the DSLAM and sent them to the Sky Hub... somehow.
Sky get sent the stats and when the Sky Hub does it authenticate/DHCP they are sent in the return packets, unique feature in the Sky Hub

might ask my mate for it back (sky hub) as hes just bought a new router
Not sure you'll be able to make that work on your now BT based service ?
It won't.
Live without the stats, providers pay no heed and just send an engineer out even if you know what they are.
Speed test a bit to get a base line and you can see what is and is not normal.
If anyone actually knows an ECI unlocking guide that works I'd be interested, as the ones out there were out of date or missing key bits of information when I looked last year.

I would of course say http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest
Helped by the fact we own and run the network and thus know that bottle necks are not because of us, whereas most other testers are using third party hosting.

If BT were to drop you to the 40/10 product you might actually be stable again.
When you push ANY xDSL service to its limits which by upgrading you have got closer to, then there can be variations in how it performs.

the mad thing is the cabinet is only a stones throw from here and the property is only 7 yrs old....

Sounds like a line problem, which your line stats may help to diagnose
Let the Openreach modem with the HH5 as just a router settle in and see they can get a DLM reset.
With FTTC to fiddle is natural, but the systems generally settle down better when left alone.

how long should i let it settle in for?
2 or 3 days
Mine dipped to 15 Mbps after a month or two and I did nothing and speed came eventually ie DLM does relent eventually

ok, remind me....how do i link my results to bottom of my sig?
I seem to remember that facility was removed due to abuse
In your results listing on your profile page. if you right click a date you can pick up its link and post it, like this:-
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html...
or
like this.
Pointless putting it in your sig anyway, as next day it will be different so is totally irrelevant.
If you look at my sig, I give my sync speeds. They change much less often and in my opinion are far more meaningful. I update them when they change.
Edit - As you can see from my reply to BatBoy, I fixed your link. I did that by comparing it with mine. On looking at your result again, I spotted you have posted the "Direct graph link". The link you should use for posting when you have a query about your result is the "Link to this result" immediately below the picture.

hmmm, BTs own wholesale tester ont give me my ip profile every time i tried it yesterday, and again now i just tried (only this) this morning and i get this:Looks like BT has refused to test, possibly because a speed test or BRAS test has been run recently which prevents this tool from working properly. Try again in a few hours. Debug: BT has no BRAS info

its a brand new laptop using google chrome.......so it shouldnt be slow lol

After the recommended modem/router swaps have taken place, is it still noticeably slow (and/or laggy) on things which aren't speed tests?

Seems the same tbh....gaming on my xbox one, which is connected using a zyxel powerline gigabit adapter showed same speeds....who knows lol

Is this the BT Wholesale tester you used? AT the bottom of the results page is a "Further diagnostics" button you need to click, then supply your landline phone number when asked.

Hi yes I I've tried that several times on that site, I get my speed but only my speed. I get an error message, whereby it said bt have refused the test or I've tested before.....even though it's the first test in like ten hours......
Well just resynced again, should be 63/19 now 51/9. I've had enough.......why can't they sort it out. Waiting on BT calling me so I can rip them a new one. This is happening the same as last time when over 2 weeks it dropped from 60/19 to 41/6. I

I would like to see your line stats but that involves reconnecting the HH5 as a modem and router and then getting them from Troubleshooting > Helpdesk on the Homehub web interface.

They've found a fault on the line, going to monitor it and call me back in 24hrs....

Like a bleeps soap opera eh lol
Well it's taken me time and a lot of patience......7 calls to BT, finally spoke to someone with a brain and a conscience...... There is a fault and they should have fixed it by now....engineer coming out tom morning and they've apparently been told to make sure I'm getting 60+meg as that's what I should be getting...courtesy call after he's gone to offer compensation as I'm now done to 42/6 from 63/19.5. Don't know what they will offer but least I'm making headway....
should my broadband not get faster than 63/19? just been on kitz and it suggests i should be getting
clean low 60.8 high 80 impacted 48.4 low 74.8 high........ive only had 63.5 for ten days out of my 12 months so far.....most of the time its been 59.5 max......just wanna have something i can ask the engineer tom morning when he comes..
should my broadband not get faster than 63/19? The clean estimate says between 60 and 80. You're getting 63 which is within that range. Your connection speed will not move around within that range, it doesn't mean that. The range means the connection speed you get will be one of those values.
Don't think of it like 'your time to work will range between 10 minutes and half an hour'. Instead of think of it as 'The typical height range of an adult human is between 1.5 and 2 metres.'
At 59.5 it was only within the impacted range so there was an implication that it might be possible to improve it although obviously it wasn't far outside the clean range anyway.

HOW DOES MY LINE LOOK.......this means nothing to me.....66meg down max and 25 meg upload max??
Well you need to look at this line:
6. Data rate: 8492 / 49181 That's what your getting now.
And this line:
7. Maximum data rate: 25643 / 66827 Which is saying that your line is capable of getting this speed if your lucky, also depends on your fibre package you are paying for.
But not having fibre myself I may be wrong about that info.

i am on BTs Infinty 2 package.... I think that's the up to 76Mbit one.
Well that speed your getting would depend on how far your away from the cabinet, don't know the maths for it, but I guess that must be right.
49Mbits down for option 2 (up to 76Mbit) lot more to pay for the extra 10Mbits, not read the whole thread, so that may of already been said.
But if you have no issues paying for the extra 10Mbits so be it.
Anyhow you may or may not get lucky and it may of may not get faster, but there seems room for it, but what do I know
Paul

yeah.....maybe read the whole thread lol......

These are the important ones - they're all the info the HH5 gives really
5. DSL uptime: 0 days, 00:04:14
6. Data rate: 8492 / 49181
7. Maximum data rate: 25643 / 66827
8. Noise margin: 16.6 / 6.5
9. Line attenuation: 15.9 / 14.9
Why is 5. so low, 4 minutes?
Why is 6. so low especially compared to 7.?
Why is noise margin 16.6 when data rate is 8492?
hub had resynced again......got openreach engineer coming tom morning to look at it....an i finally got round to putting those stats on here.....
what has the noise margin got to do with sync rate?
Edited by deleted (Wed 04-Feb-15 22:39:50)

Could be intermittent noise, mainly affecting upstream frequencies? That would explain low upstream sync and high noise margin.

what would atypical noise margin be for say 60/20?
Could be the ISP capping them close to 10Mbit ?
But yeah could be down to errors.
well hopefully the engineer will get it all working properly and it stays normal for longer than 10 days this time........
what has the noise margin got to do with sync rate? When the modem negotiates a sync speed with the dslam, they agree on one that gives a noise margin of 6. (Because higher noise margin means lower speed and lower noise margin means higher speed)
6dB and no matter what speed should be around there
Openreach DLM and line profiling is known to Openreach

what would atypical noise margin be for say 60/20? I thought ISP's like BT set these to 6.0dB (their default) unless its for capping the user, Sky was doing that to our other ADSL2+ line to cap us at 4Mbit, and as soon as they removed the cap it when back to how it was when BE was on that line.
Unless DLM has decided to cap your sync speed - then the noise margin will be higher.
ISP cannot cap speed on FTTC all in control of Openreach

Openreach DLM tends to cap the sync speed which raises the noise margin.

so.....could be DLM again?

Could be, or a fault causing noise to rise and fall.

And openreach DLM is different to any Adsl2+ dlm system

ISP cannot cap speed on FTTC all in control of Openreach Oh, didn't know that, I know Sky did for ADSL2+.
See you can teach an old dog new tricks
I just thought there was an ISP that capped the down speed of an up to 76 down to the lower package speed to allow for the higher up speed of 20 or 30 instead of the 10 or 20, but may be wrong.

So if the margin at sync was 6db, and it's 16 after 4 minutes, it definitely sounds like intermittent noise which has now stopped (hence the high attainable upstream).

lol
What does the WAN category look like??

And BT love using TR069 to "CWMP: Session start now. Event code(s): '2 PERIODIC,4 VALUE CHANGE'" Yep, I get loads of thong on my HH4.

21:49:50, 04 Feb. (864740.690000) CWMP: Initializing transaction for event code 4 VALUE CHANGE Me thinks BT does loads of these to fill up our logs so that we cannot see what they are doing LOL.
I recall a few weeks back I got 30 odd sets of these in several hours, even lagged out our HH4 then for some reason just rebooted.
I think it does loads of testing that results in settings being changed, hence the reboot.

Looks like DLM has capped your sync speed TBH
well that happened 2 weeks ago, openreach reset from 40/6 to 63/20....now im at 48/8 in 2 weeks....again....and also with a new (5th) HH5
Yeah, if the DLM is reset without the underlying fault being fixed, history repeats itself.

i will make sure he knows the story tom so he actually fixes it properly this time.....
