Personally i think they are trying to attract three customers, with threes abolishment of the one plan and all the current new contracts only allowing 4gig tethering, they are trying to show people their network is capable/better and youd be better off with them, As i say thats only my look on it even if not about three people just in general it shows people on o2 voda and three what they are ""missing"" without having to falk a single penny out,
From a business perspective its kind of good marketing, i mean lets face it if three can manage unlimited data on pretty much the same network (MBNL) ee are not going to have a problem with more spectrum available with a few thousand 100gig sims for a few month are they but it could gain them a fair few customers,
TBF ive been with EE on a phone contract and couldn't wait to get away from them so after the 200gig of data over 2 months sim will be binned n it will be a thanks but no thanks lol

The only catch I can see is that EE or D&P will send you marketing texts and D&P's market is the under-14s .

I've ordered one and I intend to use it as my primary sim, just to test the network out for when I leave 3 in Jan.
I'm curious as to what will happen at the end of the two months. They say they will contact you to pick a plan for you. Well I use about 10-15gb a month so how will that work ??

You will ahve a choice of signing up for one of their plans or not.
It doesn't mean that they will have a plan that you think is suitable 9in terms of costs/benefits).
It's just a promotional thing, to encourage people to try their network.
Can't transfer a number to this SIM though, so will need another phone if you want to be able to use existing number for recieving calls/texts.
|
|
|
Purely out of curiosity, if you are only going to use around 20% of the 100Gb monthly allowance, I would be interested to see some speed test results, throughout a month, at varying times of the day. Based on the reports and reviews that EE has had on 4G coverage and speed, it would be interesting to see if they can actually deliver 100Gb a month on this promo offer, and more importantly, what (average) speed they deliver it at.
So many times I read of ISPs offering this kind of thing, but then they shape, limit and throttle users rendering the entire claim pointless. Or their network is just over subscribed.
Do let us know how you get on - I'm adding this thread to my watch list in anticipation.
|
|
|
Oh right so at the end of the 60 days, the sim goes dead if you don't want to stay with EE??
I've been looking at their 10gb £27.99 plan anyway.
As for EE's speeds, they vary on location massively when I've tested the network in the past.

Well, it's a PAYG sim, so yes if you don't continue with them.

Note, as well, no included calls or texts, you need to top up to get those.

EE LTE is fantastic in my area. Dug out an old PAYG sim a couple of days ago to test the network again. Can't wait for the new sim to come now.

Just inserted the D & P SIM. Not paid a penny and got 'straight' (after delay finding weaker EE signal than O2 here) onto Net w/out activating anything.
No outgoing calls or SMS as I haven't topped up but can get incoming just like any PAYG SIM.
Data works over 3G or even lower.

To be honest, I've been massively impressed with EE LTE in and around Aberdeen
My average speedtests are between 40-60mbps, never below 12. and here is one i did the other day in Ellon (not even on the EE map as LTE)
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/1058453299 I'd call that pretty impressive, given the fact the house i did that in can only get up to 3mbps on ADSL

Very impressed with their coverage so far. They are slower than in most areas but 4G is literally everywhere. They have opened up a BIG lead so far.
Are these sims 'double speed' enabled?

Have my SIM in a Kindle and doing ok
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html...
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html...
At home the Kindle is actually doing better than an old Samsung SII for a useable signal, and can get H+ upstairs (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=1417532743187052255) but down to GPRS and speed on the ground floor
Fingers crossed will be in London to do some more testing and see how fast I can get the Kindle HDX over 4G.

Have my SIM in a Kindle and doing ok
I think Amazon have or are changing the names, so the "Kindle Fire" tablets are becoming just "Fire" to separate out from the Kindle e-ink book readers.
From searching it seems the Qualcomm MDM9x25 is in the Fire HDX, and this is a Category 4 device, same as the iPhone 6 / 6+ and iPad Air 2.
Anandtech did an article when it was released:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6541/the-state-of-qual...
Some users on digital spy (in more remote locations) are reporting 100+ megabit speeds on the EE 100gb SIM !!
Those speeds of yours are surely LTE, but your Samsung S II only has a 21megabit max HSPA+ modem, with real world speeds around 15mbps max. The HDX will support LTE (4G) and all the lower speeds which includes DC-HSPA 42megabit (around 30 seen in real world).

Got my Sim in a Y800 but H+ only as 4G is a bit weak,
Getting between 15-20mbps down and 2-3mbps up.
Been great replacement to stream and play xbox online with when Virgin network starts to crumble in the evenings.
Will be switching to EE when I manage to get rid of O2!
Will be moving around a bit in coming months so I will update here with some speedtest results soon.

I ordered one of these SIM Cards however i have yet to receive it, I put an order for one around the 27/28th November and it is now the 10th December without anything come through the post yet. Has anyone else had this issue with it taking this long to arrive when it specifically states on the website that it takes a maximum of 5 working days to receive?

Speed test in Victoria Station, just now, on an iPhone 5s linked to a Netgear AirCard (4G) with this EE promo sim in it: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/i/1069643727
Not any better than GiffGaff 4G in the same area, to be honest.

Phone 5s linked to a Netgear AirCard (4G)
I assume that's using WiFi to link the two?
Can you confirm there is no WiFi congestion in that area? Normally in cities WiFi congestion is a big issue.
Here in Farnborough, my MiFi managed 15 to 20meg, and my iPhone managed 40 to 50 meg.
YMMV.

WiFi, yes.
There could be quite a few wireless networks around that area, but considering the upload was high, I find that the unlikely cause (also, the AirCard was in my bag, which is obviously less than 1m away (probably nearer half a metre) from the my iPhone when in use).
I also don't get any better speed back at home (south east Kent). So these people that are getting >100Mbs must be on a completely empty/unused segment of the 4G EE network.

It also depends what Cat type your aircard is.
My iPhone 6 last Sunday night managed 76mbps download and 30 upload, but right now I'm getting 50mbps download and 15 upload - standing in the same place (my front room). It also depends on the load on the speed test server.
I find WiFi in cities (tethering) to be hopeless and end up using USB cable.

Now I have a 4G device and the EE sim have been speed testing around and the variability even in an 8 second period is pretty large. I am wondering how sustained the highest speeds people post are, I know some testers lean towards burst rather than mean.
Netflix on 4G was impressive, buffered enough for a 1 mile train tunnel, but failed just on emerging before picking signal up again.

agreed, I have big variability in my local area, some masts are "doublespeed" and some are not. I assume different backhaul. E.g. at my friends house across town I get speeds of 10 to 15 mbps. The insane speeds reported on Digital Spy are 133mbps in Newcastle and Devon - and I personally assume these are in areas of no other EE 4G users.
I can fairly regularly hit 58 to 60mbps on lots of different speedtest.net sites, but using your tester on an iPhone 6 the download is around 40 and upload is very variable. The graphs vary dramatically depending on time of day - as you'd expect.
EE in this area is the popular network, others (especially Vodafone) still don't have 3G coverage indoors.

I used this on a Drive from Crawley to Instow and throughout the weekend and back and was impressed..
Used in a Y800 Mi-Fi so Wi-Fi limited it to around 45mbps, I was getting a 30-45mbps download and 7-30mbps upload on 4G driving down the M23, M23 and M3.
3G for the rest of the journey and that was very frequent 7-19mbps download and 0.8-2.8mbps upload and most of these tests where done in rural locations along the A303 and other A roads.
And whilst at the Hotel on the coast I was getting 15-20mbps download and 1.3-2.4mbps upload.
The latency was pretty good too, and streaming HD Video, BBC iPlayer in HD with 5-6 devices connected simultaneously.
So very impressed, and once I shake the O2 dog from my leg I will be joining.

After reading your post Ash I put the SIM back into my phone and received the same text message. (I had only used it to confirm my phone was unlocked and run a couple of speedtests)
How they have taken £15 from my credit remains to be seen though as I had none!
|
|
|
Well now having used it for over 2 weeks at work
its been solid
according to my phone
1 bar of signal and I'm getting 20-25Mbps download and about 4-6Mbps upload
pretty nice considering my work connection is usually 1mbps max
I feel also out in the country side their coverage is miles ahead of o2 at least up here
I'm getting 4G in a farm 10miles from the nearest town and when it does drop out its very strong H+
can't say I'm anything more than impressed at the moment.

And assuming you're perfectly happy to contract with a company with a greater than 90% 1 star review rating, per: https://www.trustpilot.co.uk/review/ee.co.uk
I note your other thread regarding O2 also (that you're not happy with them).
To be honest, I'm not sure there is any best mobile provider now - they are probably all run in the same way. Personally, I had a run in with EE a while ago over something (I wont bore you with the details here), and as such, I will not be contracting with them ever again, in any way what so ever. I only took their 2 month promo SIM as a freebie to use over the Xmas period, nothing more.

Well EE have done me better than O2 has, But I will be treading lightly before I commit to anything.
Customer services has been [censored] (and 50% off shore), but I read in the summer that EE were moving customer services back to the UK in various locations for call centres. The last two calls I've made (actually the only two this year) to cust services were easy, quick and the people answered had Newcastle accents
A lot of people had loss of service when they turned off old Orange masts that newer T-Mob masts were supposed to cover. This of course changed the pattern. Lots of Watchdog and similar - but that was a one off event 18 months ago, and now it should have settled. However people have a long memory. A friend of mine was offered his PAC code to move even in a contract due to lack of signal - so they were being fair, but not all customer services was good :-/

To be honest O2 couldn't help me when I had full signal but no calls, texts or internet.... So O2's customer service was useless too if you ask me but to be honest they idea is not to need Customer Services
EE's sim has been awesome and I've now setup a divert on my O2 contract and put the sim in an old Nokia which sits on bedside table gathering dust.

The ookla app appears to report burst speeds from the testing I have done.
Our http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest shows the average and graphs.

Not a surprise, always has been the case.
Our http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest shows the average and graphs.
Yours also causes the OS / browser to ask for location, and ask for it to be bookmarked. Yours only has one server, and doesn't have detailed logs, as the Ookla app does. Yours doesn't show WiFi versus LTE versus HSPA+ versus GPRS etc. Ookla does.
Graphs are nice, but yours is still in the early stages in comparison. When a route from a cellular provider to your server is congested, you can't select a different server, with ookla you can.
The cellular ISPs are probably the largest, given BT, Virgin etc, have 5m to 8m customers, and O2 have 28million and EE something like 25million customers.

Indeed it is and I've been crunching a few numbers this afternoon and will be able to afford to pay off my iPhone from O2 this month.
So I will be leaving O2 on the 14th
Cue the fireworks!

Maybe just me but I took up the free SIM offer and put the SIM in my dual SIM phone, (Hisense U971). At the end of the two months my phone would turn off WiFi whenever coming out of "sleep mode".
A factory reset of the phone was required to get back to normal operation!

The T-Mobile PAYG £20 addon "6MONTHWEB" gives me 6 months "unlimited", (cough), data with tethering of, I think, upto 6 or 8 devices.
Unlimited? Their web site says "This Booster comes with a fair use policy of 1GB a month." What happens when you exceed it? I expect to use between 10GB and 20GB per month in a mifi.

think they are trying to attract three customers, with threes abolishment of the one plan and all the current new contracts only allowing 4gig tethering, they are trying to show people their network is capable/better and youd be better off with them
You're probably right. I've been very impressed. Mostly with download speeds exceeding 30MB/sec. I may decide to go for their £20 per month / 15GB cap deal.
And of course they were also finding out how much people will download if given an effectively "unlimited" allowance.
I half expected to see revised tariffs appearing. However, with the dead hand of BT looking over the business, all bets are off.
BT have consistently proved their ability to screw up over and over again. No imagination, no customer perspective and a really bad attitude.
I'm hoping that a monopoly situation won't be brought about by allowing Three to buy O2 and BT to buy EE, but that will require a change of government: this lot are deeply in the pocket of big business.

where is this 15 gig for £20?
|
|
|
|
They limit you to browsing and e-mail.

I see now its a data only sim.
Hopefully EE's basic tariffs will get more generous over the next couple of years.
Paying a premium for it, but the competition is very substandard.
