FTTC in Hastings

[link to this post]

Hastings exchange is/was due to be enabled for FTTC on 1/3/2012. That is today but trying to order a FTTC product I'm told that it isn't available on my line. Is that likely to be because the checkers haven't been updated yet or the fact that FTTC hasn't gone live yet? Is there any way to tell when it has gone live other than to keep trying to order a service? Postcode is TN38 0GN if that helps. Current ADSL2+ service has 61.0db attenuation so it ain't fast, keen to get on to something a bit quicker.

Where did you get the date from?

Put your phone number into the OpenReach checker. When that says you can get FTTC, then you can order.

A great place to check for this is actually the escc roadworks page!

http://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/roadsandtransport/roads...

Check page 4 for some BT works, so it does show that BT are getting there! I'm in the same boat, waiting for my cabinet to be changed laugh

It seems to me that the BT Wholesale checker is very hit and miss, my brothers house shows as not having FTTC available, yet on the BT Infinity site it shows that it is. Even BT told him he couldn't get it, but then when he said about the Infinity site they checked another system and confirmed he could! This was a week or two ago and it's still the same now.

Anyway I've found that Openreach has a feed on Twitter where each Monday the announce exchanges that have gone live.

Then it's just a matter of your cabinet being done, you can find your cabinet number here. Filter by postcode, if it's not there then it was not scheduled when the spreadsheet became available.

I emailed Sam Knows about the Twitter feed and they said they are in talks with BT to try and improve the information available.

I'm also eagerly awaiting my exchange to go live, cabinets installed and RFS was 1-03-2012.

NDHAS HASTINGS TN380GN {NDHAS}{P18} 0 100% 19.21 7b Yes FTTC

So that is telling me that 100% of lines in TN380GN postcode are served by cab {NDHAS}{P18} and that the cab has been deployed, right?

All correct apart from the deployed part. I think that column is somewhat misleading as I seem to recall someone on here saying that it is to show cabinets that have been scheduled for deployment. So, keep an eye on the cabinet and when you see it being replaced, you shouldn't have long to wait! (Should change from a scabby old green box to a shiny new larger box!)

Surprised to find this thread here, am on the Hastings exchange currently until saturday when moving back with parents who are on the BALDSLOW exchange which same as Hastings was theoretically enabled 01/03/2012 but none of the checkers show it as available. Have started a Sky LLU connection but want to upgrade to their fibre service which goes live in April. Hoping its all sorted by then!

Actually thinking about it when I was in London Road today I saw a BT engineer opposite working on a big box, maybe its the start!

If you check the Openreach website they have it down as 31st March (or was it on the BT Infinity website). Also according the Openreach website, the Hastings exchange is going to be FTTP rather than FTTC.

They haven't stopped work on the deployment but what the announcement implies is that 31st March is no longer the RFS date for Hastings and Baldslow.

Yea thats by sister and her boyfriends house...the [censored] lol.
There's boxes going up everywhere there's loads.
I live on elphinstone road (the langham end) and my cabinet hasn't even been touched!. I saw the BT guys laying the cables at it and spoke to them and they said it will be done on my street but if you got further up elphinstone road they've done all the boxes up there which im actually quite annoyed about as it seems they've skipped my box, i just hope it gets done. As for the 31st of march thats just an estimate i doubt it will be done by then. They say once they have 10 cabinets installed and completely wired up they activate it, im not sure if thats true or not. They don't seem to have a lot of information on whats going on either.
They seem to be doing really strange areas first like warrior square i don't mean to offend anyone but most people there will never afford the internet! or even care about it.

I wouldn't count on it, we had an FTTC RFS date of 1-03-12 on Sam Knows for our exchange. Superfast where and when just shows March 2012, cabinets been in for at least a month now, and we're still waiting.

Edit: Exchange has still not been activated - they seem to announce them on Twitter

I'm now getting this on the Openreach ADSL checker for the first time (Hastings exchange)

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 31st March 2012. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 40Mbps and upstream line speed of 10Mbps.

I went up the road yesterday to speak with one the engineers as i have no cabinet either but all around me does!...anyway he said theres a total of 94 cabinets to be done in hastings and they will all be done by the end of the year!. So there's no way of knowing when it will be done it just depends where you are on the list. It could be months after everyone else has got it.

Hi guys

Been following this thread for a week or so. Very informative so thank you. I'm
Close to town around the Linton road area and have spotted a new cabinet but whether it's relevant to me or not I don't know. Nothing showing via the checker yet.

Found myself cabinet spotting on the way to tesco last night, there's plenty around.

Let's just hope for some luck on Monday that some more get switched on! I need my uploads! smile

All the best smile

In response to the cooling fan question - The noise is equivalent to a standard fridge compressor at 0.5m distance, and they only run during hot weather.

May I ask why you are interested about possible noise?

Openreach have just updated their "where and when" documents, here.

Good news, Baldslow is now accepting orders but the bad news is Hastings has been pushed back to June 2012. On a more positive note Hastings is now listed as FTTC/P. Just need to find out which areas will be able to have FTTP. smile

I guess covering a much smaller area than the main Hastings exchange it was bound to be enable first. Hopefully Openreach will use the next 3 months extending the infrastructure so that more of us on the Hastings exchange can have FTTP right from the start because going down the "FTTP on Demand" route is way too expensive.

One thing I noticed is there is no sign of Castleham or Guestling on the list of the exchanges being enabled in 2013.

It's all telegraph poles round my way and the cabinet is just around the corner sitting right next to one so hopefully having FTTP will be a possibility, especially since the PCP my line is connected to is about 20m further away on the otherside of a main road.

It's all poles around my way as well the cabinet is about 10 doors down the road. Would have thought where there's poles would have FTTP as it easier install and requires no road digging etc, suppose were be lucky to even get FTTC some time in the next few months.

to be fair Hastings has more cabinets that balslow.

theres no harm activating it early if all the baldslow cabinets are done.

True because Baldslow only has 10 cabinets listed in the FTTC rollout.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 40Mbps and upstream line speed of 10Mbps.

That cabinet is connected to PCP 9 further down Blackman Avenue which is on the Hastings exchange and covers the northern bit of Hollingtion Old Lane between Blackman Avenue and Old Church Road but not the bit between Blackman Avenue and Coventry Road. This one also covers Coventry road and bizarrely Drury Lane on Ponswood.

These oddities probably go back to when the Castleham exchange was built when they switched lines from the Hastings exchange and probabaly the early days of ADSL when BT would re-route lines to try and improve sync speeds in the St Leonards area.

Superfast Fibre Optic Broadband is planned for your line in July 2012. Register your interest and we'll contact you as soon as it becomes available.*

Your estimated download speed would be 53.9Meg and upload speed would be 15.7Meg.^ Top speed depends on line and location.

Compared to your current download speed of 3.6 Meg.

why cant bt give this info its their infrastructure, run by incompetant- 10 years too late corporate dinosaur thats why

The Hastings exchange is now being shown as accepting orders on the Openreach fibre map - http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/ (on the map, not the PDF which still lists Hastings as coming soon).

I checked a couple of postcodes on the BT wholesale checker, and one of them came up as having FTTC (Sedlescombe Road North).

The north part of Sedlescombe Road North round Ledsham Avenue down to Harrow Lane is on the Hastings Exchange, then down to Old Roar Road is on the Baldslow exchange. When you get past the roundabout with St Helen's Road it's back on the Hastings exchange.

2. we like to make superfast services available as soon as possible so when we declare an exchange is 'accepting orders', all the street cabinets in the exchange area may not have been completed yet. This takes time, so please be patient with us.

3. in many exchange areas not every cabinet can be upgraded.

My cabinet has not been installed yet, though, there was two large Openreach trucks outside about a month ago. The detailed roll-out spreadsheet listed FTTC for my postcode, however, I am hoping the lack of cabinet means they have changed plans to FTTP, otherwise June is not looking like a go.

Openreach will run the fibre up your nearby telephone pole, and then to your property using the existing copper line as support. Not sure if that means you will have to wait longer for an install date.

Could someone help me out here with a couple of questions i have.
My current phone line comes from a pole outside my house from the previous posts does this mean im likely to have to while longer than if it came from a cab? Im not sure where my cab is , im on one of the unadopted roads behind boscobel road.
Also does this mean the fibre optic will come right to my door rather than stop at the nearest cab and will this mean a better speed when it does arrive?

Sadly, a current phone line connection via a pole does not necessarily mean you will be offered FTTP. Though roll-out plans may have changed since last Decembers spreadsheet, it only lists the following postcodes as getting FTTP - TN37 6SZ, TN38 0AJ, TN38 0BX, TN38 0AL, TN38 0AH, TN38 0AE, TN38 0AQ, TN38 0AG

For a more up to date assessment, type your address into the BT Infinity checker. With FTTP, the fibre would be terminated within your property, and would be a higher speed.

From what I understand FTTP in Hastings won't be rolled out until the end of the year or early 2013 when the FTTC rollout is complete. There's only a couple of areas slated for FTTP, your area which I'm guessing is somewhera around the Grosvenor Crescent/Seaside Road area and part of the Warrior Square area.

It won't make any difference unless you have a direct exchange line. The lines that come via poles will end up at a cabinet somewhere. One advantage of having the line coming via telegraph poles is that once "FTTP on Demand" becomes available it should be a lot cheaper to install than if it's all underground.

Been keeping a track of this since back in January.

Good news on my cab according to BT. Available 30th June at speed of 66.7mb down and 20mb up. This is at the top of Harley Shute on FTTC. Must be pretty close to the cab with those speeds you would think?

Is this still looking a realistic date as we all know what these things are like?

Hi all, anon here again smile

Just spoke to a very nice man at BT Business who said that they are now taking orders for Infinity 2 in the area I'm interested in at the moment (Wellington Square).

Ordering at the moment involves paying £99 for a check to see whether the line is suitable for the service. This check can take up to 20 days from ordering to completion (!!!???).

If the line isn't suitable the £99 is refunded - Not sure if it's credited if it is suitable....

So - Nearly there smile

The works are complete now. The cabinet is now emitting a nice quiet fan noise. I think it was finished on Tuesday. BT Infinity, Talk Talk and Sky still say the service is not available to my number though (This is deffo my cabinet, I've checked!). What's the problem? Is there still more work to be completed inside the cabinet?

Most of the cabinets in the Harley Shute Road area have been powered up for the last 2-3 weeks and the BT Wholesale/BT Infinity checkers have speed estimates but are saying fibre won't be available until 30th June 2012. Whether this date will change at all, I have no idea.

Just checked BT Infinity and got the same message as you Simon194. Tried Talk Talk and Sky (who I'm currently with) and they still don't see me as having a fibre option yet. At least I know my cabinet is working and I'm definitely on it. Just a waiting game now.

I actually get a speed and date of 30th July with Talk Talk but like you I get nothing from Sky (who I'm also with). Personally I don't mind the wait because I'm planning to sign up to Sky's Fibre Pro Unlimited service which isn't going to be available to existing customers until June/July. I probably wouldn't pass the credit check if I changed providers anyway. smile

Against my better judgement I tried the TalkTalk checker and it says fibre on my cab by August, whereas the BT Wholesale checker says end of June. Who to believe, if any?

I have now as well.

I also had a email back from Sky regarding their Fibre Unlimited product and it said that "unfortunately our coverage currently doesn't match the coverage of BT Infinity". Whether that implies it's not going to be available in Hastings or not I have no idea.

You definitely can't order it if you are connected to the Baldslow exchange because a mate of mine has tried.

So it is although I'm after Sky's 80/20 package which isn't available as an upgrade to existing customers until sometime next month.

It's only a couple of weeks away hopefully plus there's alway the possiblity Sky won't offer the upgrade straight away.

The cabinet might be going in but it could be weeks before it goes live. It's the electrical contractors that seem to hold everything up. The cab near me was put in at the beginning of March and only went live last week.

I'm able to order now (De Cham Rd). But Sky won't allow existing TV customers to change to the all-in-one plans, which is incredibly frustrating.

The options are very limited at the moment. I think I'm going to wait it out until fibre becomes more than a BT, Virgin or Sky thing. I've heard nothing but nightmares with Sky. I used Virgin back in 2009 in Bournemouth (Bournemouth was the first ever 'fibre-city') and I got 50mbps consistently, but I think their service has degraded since then.

Holding hope that Be/O2 will hurry up and begin their fibre upgrade soon.

I thought anyone could sign up for their broadband packages including fibre regardless. It's the Unlimited Pro one that's only available to new customers at the moment.

I decided to upgrade to their fibre service because it has finally been confirmed that there will be an upgraded path to the Pro service for existing fibre customers. Roll on the 20th.

I've had Sky broadband for a couple of years now and in all that time I've only had one problem, apart from their nationwide network failure a while back. The thing is, people that have issues with their service the air their opinions in public and not the satisfied customers.

If you don't want to go with Sky or BT there's Plusnet, ADSL24 and others offering fibre in the area and in August, Talk Talk will have their fibre packages available (although, from experience, I wouldn't wish TT on anyone) smile

Well to be honest I'm in a good place right now. I got my O2 contract in 2008 and it is 100% unlimited, no peak-usage limits, no throttling, just absolute unlimited all month long. And I've somewhat grown accustom to that and don't intend on changing to anything but unlimited. If I change providers and lose that, I'd regret it, even with the faster speeds. And nowadays 'unlimited' never means unlimited any more...

So I think I'll wait it out a bit longer. Not ready for pay ~£60/m for fully-unlimited fibre. smile

That's why I've stuck with Sky. Talk Talk started complaining because my usage was over 200GB per month (a majority of that was work related) and in the end terminated my contract. I just love it when an ISP starts imposing their FUP after they've taken over the customer's of another ISP (originally with Bulldog) that offered proper unlimited broadband. Luckily I was already transfering to Sky on my second line so it wasn't too much of a problem.

Now it's regularly over 500GB a month by the time you add my son's online gaming and my daughter's film and music downloads and not heard a squeak from Sky about it. smile

A lot of the town centre is on exchange only lines so no FTTC is available. Probabaly because the exchange used to be down Havelock Road where UCH is now.

The White Rock Road area should be connected to PCP 34 which is at the top of White Rock Gardens near the junction with White Rock Road.

I had the BT engineer in yesterday to set everything up. He had to go back to the cabinet to fix an issue but other than that it took less than an hour. Probably should take 30mins. On checking line speed so far the max i am able to receive is 25mb but this may go up or down. So far its only gone down so I don't think I'll get much more than that. As I was on 1.5mb I am over the moon, just a shame I can't get any nearer the 40mb. I'll update once the line settles down.

Although this is for Hastings, not Eastbourne, I'll report here anyway.

For the cabinet I'm connected to, the checker reported the capability a few days after the power was connected. A few days following that I was then able to put in an order on the BT Business website and around three weeks later I received the service at an initial 79999/20000. I've had some problems but I believe they were mostly related to a faulty master socket filter, and as such am currently using my ADSLNation XTE-2005 until I'm completely certain of that. My sync is now 73322/20000 with an interleaving depth of somewhere around 1500, but the ping is only about 12ms higher as a result so fairly tolerable for gaming online still. As of posting this is my 11th day of using FTTC, with original estimates or 58.5Mbps/18Mbps.

Just need to get it upgraded to Fibre Pro but Sky won't let me for another month which is a bit annoying because I discovered I could have ordered Pro by phone after I had ordered online.
