Packetloss on Infinity 2 in evenings?

[link to this post]

Hi all,

Seem to be seeing regular packetloss in games after 6 pm although it does happen throughout the day as of late.
Anybody experiencing the same problem?

Can you tracert and pathping 82.136.6.6

and bbc.co.uk

Thanks

I am seeing it on every BT line, and its also on my BT gateway.

Reported it on the BTcare forums, it started when they unthrottled P2P.

Check this graph (also notice the slight latency increase as well)

something is overloaded in BTs network.

Its such a tiny amount on the graph I bet its almost imperceptible, but I see the same on my BQM.

I see the same but don't notice any real problems. And it may not be all "loss" some may be because it has timed out. Pings are treated with low priority in some routers when there is heavy traffic. As for the increased latency, again it is small and is to be expected during peak times.

5-10% is not tiny.

This is why I suspect it might be just be between tbb and BT because in normal circumstances 5% would be very noticeable.

That packet loss for online gamers is a no no. I came from Be which is was near on perfect for the 4 years I had it. VM are just plain awful and now BT is starting to look poor.

Has anyone contacted BT as above? Any progress?

I've been observing this issue since the 13th Feb and hoped it would clear up without contacting BT.

Yesterday it looked like it had been fixed:
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share-large/a7aaa...

However tonight the packetloss and slight rise in latency is back:
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share-large/eb11d...

It's not severe but the low/erratic throughput is starting to become annoying.

Plusnet users seem to have the same issue as posted to their status page and even had someone monitoring their forum and interacting with customers to try and find the problem last night, nothing definitive was found though:

In my opinion this problem is BT retail not BT wholesale, I checked aaisp's blogs for info on it as aaisp would be noisy about it if was on BT wholesale for weeks.

I would say what did you expect, BT to have scaled network to allow p2p and streaming to expand to maximum capability with no impact on the network.

Bar some congestion over christmas sky are managing it. If BT aren't willing to keep up they will just lose customers to sky which I'm not sure they are happy to do.

Chrysalis, did you recontract to get the throttling removed? I havn't yet due to these problems, locking myself in isn't an optionn because I can't put up with this long term. I'll contact BT_Care tonight if it's still broken.

Hello guys,

Plusnet and Sky have been having problems that I've also had but mine including packet loss. Links below...

PlusNet: http://www.plus.net/supportpages.html?a=2&support_ac...

Looking at the forum a few had packet loss on top of the problems stated.

Sky: http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Fibre-Broadband/Fibre-Br...

Though it may not be directly connected, it's worth noting. Though It could just be a matter of a coincidence.

I did recontract but I was only 1-2 months into a 18 month contract anyway so ironically I managed to shorten my contract.

Currently I plan to jump ship during the summer. At which point I will have to pay off approx 6 months.

Deciding to either go for true quality and static ip someone like zen but high cost and no unmetered use.
Or escape BT wholesale and go with sky who seem to know what they doing better with capacity, have easynet peering and although not static ip they do have dhcp auth meaning ip's will stick between ppp resets.

BT is still night and day over VM os this isnt urgent for me, but been blunt i think I only went with infinity to get a fast install (was only checker saying yes at time) and I knew if issues the CEO would only help me if I was a BT retail customer.

Regarding plusnet to me it looks very different. The graphs for their issue was huge spikes of latency, not packetloss. Also different time frames, and different dates. Dont assume just because another isp has a slowdown issue or something similiar reported its the same thing. Plus plusnet staff confirmed their issue was on the plusnet equipment.

http://www.plus.net/supportpages.html?a=2&support_ac...

and their forums where graphs got posted and comments from staff made.

Also I agree with your reply to mrsaffron, if they were willing to uncap p2p they should have also been willing to provide enough capacity, if not p2p should have stayed capped. I didnt want to join another VM where they just under supply and leave everyone to fight for resources.

Finally your comment on the trial is interesting as the BT forum also has complaints of slow speeds which apparently started in dec 2012.

before you get defensive of BT think about it.

BT seem to love the phrase on their sales "we wont slow your connection down". A very vague phrase which essentially also covers congestion.

Their T&C's state they aim to provide a high quality service.

I certianly didnt expect packetloss on a nightly basis. But this is still unconfirmed if its just an issue between BT and tbb, or a more wider problem. Before the packetloss started I was seeing reduced speeds in the evening anyway so I am not assuming the 2 are related, especially as I have been able to get full speed during the periods of packetloss.

Hai,

On the first and second night with the packet loss I noticed major drops in throughput down from 25/26Mbps to 3 - 10Mbps. On top of that problems connecting to servers because of it, web pages taking 20 seconds to load.

The packet loss hasn't been as bad since then but I do still feel it when browsing at times I will get no web pages loading for about 5 seconds due to it. Can really feel it when I start gaming though so It need's to be resolved.

Ed, the ELC person who I'm in contact with believes it's coming from the core but cannot say for sure yet.

Will keep you guys updated.

It doesn't just apply to people still on the managed connections then, so I should definitely hold of recontracting.

Plusnet havn't said it's their network and staff have said they are still miffed, all in the links I posted earlyer. I saw evening slowdowns increased latency and packet loss on their forums, that's exactly what I'm seeing, just becasue there are dissimilar issues posted don't assume they are the only ones.

Anyway, looks like there is progress and it was bad tonight again so I'll contact support too.

I've had FTTC with BT since 2010 and this is the first time I've been concerned. There be gremlins somewhere, hopefully they can be tracked down and squashed.

thats different to our problem I am afraid.

BT is a very slight maybe 1-3ms increase in latency accompanied by low tricking packetloss that lasts 4+ hours nearly evey evening. Plusnet has a huge rise in latency for a shorter period of time.

Also I believe it will affect everyone (on affected gateways) considering the issue is on my gateway, and my gateway didnt change when I recontracted.

I'm afraid I never claimed there weren't any issues being reported that were different.

Also confirming what package you were on was to determin if it was just effecting users on the old managed package. Obviously it's not effecting all gateways otherwise it would be effecting everyone.

Hi guys,

I spoke to Ed earlier today, BT Wholesale had to escalate it further. I believe it was escalated to BT Operate If I remember, he said it could be due to an area of the routing. Which make sense similar to like the above.net problems before, told me he will give me an update some time next week. I will post back here when I have some more Information.

from what I can see its not affecting my normal traffic.

A speedtest I done just now whilst not perfect is not indicating it has packetloss the result was way to high for that in my view (about 3-4mbit below line speed). I am not getting hung pages whilst browsing, missing images etc. (another sympton of packetloss).

MTR's pathpings and normal pinging only show an increased base latency of about 1ms but no packetloss.

I think it doesnt matter what package you on but its logical to assume not all gateways will be affected.

Also tested in some ssh sessions, where packetloss causes sticky cursor syndrome, none of that either.

Had an email back from Ed this morning.

"Our suppliers found some issues on the core network. This needed some equipment to be replaced and the traffic across the network was split into two routes.

Have you seen any improvement in performance?"

So, has anyone seen any improvement? I've personally not had the packet loss as high as I have (30%). But I'm seeing packet loss throughout the day now recently on average around 4% packet loss, which is noticeable. This peaking up to 10 or 20 at times...

I'm using f8lure as well, and I can feel the packet loss while surfing, gaming, downloading.

When I had the 30% I was waiting 20 second for pages to load, couldn't connect to servers because of it the majority of the time. This problem is network wide, as you will see even BT can see that. You think they would replace hardware just for me because I had packet loss just to ThinkBroadband?

The problem exists, I don't see why you are questioning it either..

There's only 2 BT Infinity graphs - hardly "lots", and they are both "Edinburgh Gateway".

Probably because BQM doesn't support dynamic IP which you get with Infinity.

Two is enough to show if the issue is with the route in from BT though?
And the others from other providers show it is not the pingbox with an issue.

That was the purpose of the link, i.e. show there is not a generic problem with our end.

Sunday was the worst yet [1], yesterday there was a big spike of packet loss at 10AM, suggesting that's when they changed the kit, followed by the best evening for a while [2] difficult to tell amongst my usage but it was easy to see the improvement by comparing with the Edinburgh Gateway because it mirrors the packet loss and latency rise, tonight it's just about there [3].

From here at least it seems they are ontop of it, it will only get better now for anyone else still effected I recon. Thanks for reporting back.

mine was reduced, but there was spots of it and the latency still had some variation suggesting whatever is wrong still exists, just not so severe.

BT gateway

smokeping actually looked much worse, from germany base latency of 30ms up to all over the place around 70ms with a peak packetloss of 4.62%.

Will setup today more smokeping graphs from .uk .nl and .us.

Runs the same in-line with my printer, also I've never lost packets before. So this issue is new, which BT have confirmed it is affecting my connection. So, I really don't understand your points.

Yeah, lets look at the evidence:

* Using HH3 - known to be a pretty poor and non configurable box
* Pinging PC - no info if this is over WiFi or Ethernet and how loaded this PC is

No knowledge on how ICMP is redirected from the public IP on the HH3 through the NAT to a private IP since the forwarding on the HH3 is complex and non intuitive.

The packet loss could easily be between the VDSL modem and the users PC, and nothing to do with the BT service.

Only reliable solution would be to replace the HH3 with a configurable router and ping its public IP.

24 hours and only 1 point where the packet loss rise to 1% loss.

Since the changed hardware the packet loss seems to be gone, so looking good.

I didn't post on this website to get help, I had done all checks before sending this off to BT. I simply registered to agree with this person and provide updates for anyone else experiencing the same problem as whom. Come Monday providing these results stay the same I will be closing the case as resolved, the hardware being the problem @ BT Wholesale.

Oh, so the hardware that was replaced earlier which you said resulted in you "seeing packet loss throughout the day now recently on average around 4% packet loss", is now responsible for fixing your packet loss completely.

You are cute, try reading.

I'm not denying I had around 4% packet loss at the start of transition but that could be because they were moving peoples routing. Now there are even people on each, it has now calmed down. There is next to no packet loss now, nothing has changed my end at all. Like it hasn't since the install of Infinity... the new hardware has helped considerably.

No guess work by my side, I'm still skeptical whether it has been resolved or not as I've seen days like this in the past (this being the best yet). With the last few days being good as well so it's looking up. Whether it was the IP change or the hardware change from the 86 domain to the 31 I don't know. I've had problems with the 131 (or 139, Can't remember off the top of my head) IP's in the past so it could well of been but just a coincidence I feel at this time.

Agreed, you can see no packet loss when maxing my connection yesterday.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/11fe1afb5b4...

You can see it from 10pm - 12am, streaming 1080p @ 60FPS

No packet loss basically just the normal 1% you get, though I did jinx it earlier on in the day!

Changed my modem over to unlocked one this morning, all stats are basically at target. Bar the down SNR at 6.3 but it's close enough.

The 100% is when the PC is turned off as stated before, today has been ok compared to the original packet loss of 20/30%.

2/3% on the TBB graph on places but it's normally around 5 - 10% so it isn't all bad.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/c7f5b1d2446...

It always seems to re-appear at certain times for me, which are 2pm - 6pm. The highest normally being around 4pm then later on in the day between 8pm - 12am.

Have you noticed a pattern when you get the packet loss (time wise)?

My latency is higher because my speed is 1/3 of what you have. Which is normally 26Mbps but some tests by Wholesale dropped it to 25.8 Sync then this morning when I changed the modem to an unlocked version. Probably doesn't help I'm pinging by PC as well...

That will do it. You should really baseline your latency when nobody is using the net - and no background downloads (e.g. PS3 update, Windows Update etc).

I rarely download, I downloaded yesterday for around an hour for the first time in a couple of days. When I downloaded Visual Studio 2012, the packet loss was fine for that as well... so it isn't really a problem when using all the bandwidth.

When I first started getting it, it was only when I was browsing and that was 20/30% loss.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/11fe1afb5b4...

From 10pm which is me streaming then when the blue doubles is me downloading a patch for l4d2. You can see the packet loss is very minimal, a quick question not really looked at all the settings in the Modem. Is it possible to ping the modem (HG612 unlocked)? Still using the HomeHub will replace it soon probably wait for the new Draytek router to come out.

The packet loss has improved though rather a lot, I can actually watch streams now without getting pauses because of it. We just need to make it all go away, Ed will be getting back to on Monday.

Edit: I swear every time I talk about it comes back, just had spikes off around 7%.

Is it possible to ping the modem (HG612 unlocked)?

No, its invisible as the PPPoE session goes to the router through the modem.

Still using the HomeHub will replace it soon probably wait for the new Draytek router to come out.

You can configure the unlocked modem as a modem/router and ping that.

It looks like the packet loss is just on your PC, as it's not on your gateway or the next hop.

Just stop replying please, your comments are useless. The packet loss happened all the way to the last hop and happens to all PCs/laptops on our network.

Using the modem as a router isn't an option for me.

No thanks, I just wanted to confirm that your graph was total smack and that you didn't have the IP of my gateway.

You are just making yourself look like an idiot... there are plenty of my tracerts on the Internet. So be quick and you might be able to post my Gateway and try make me believe that is what that graph is.

On top of that If one persons connection was being affected it wouldn't even show as packet loss on the gateway due to the amount of people who are connected to my exchange and use the gateway.

Btw I know it ain't my computer as I monitored my connection between me and the hub for packet loss to remove that from the equation. So you're just making yourself look like an idiot, I will happily start it again to make you look more like an idiot.

You have to be ratty, it's comedy!

ok so we clear, the issue posted in this thread wasnt 2pm to 6pm it was in the evenings, it seems it is common for people to read packetloss or whatever and jump in assuming is the same problem. Like eg. someone confused it also with plusnet problems as well.

The pattern is shown in all the graphs I have posted, very light packet loss in mid evening, accompanied by slight increase in peak latency, although I have yet to experience packet loss on anything I use, its only visible on tbb graphs (and the smokeping graph I did).

I can see the issue is back tonight, its just less severe now, for a much shorter period of time than last week.

At the lower levels I agree, when it goes over 5% It does affect streaming from twitch.tv. When I had the higher packet loss I had problems to the majority of sites and connecting to speedtest servers failed or the throughput was just awfully bad because of the packet loss.

Hi, yeah.

Got around 2/3% packetloss tonight so it is getting better.

I had a reply from Ed today, Wholesale are now stating they can no longer see packet loss on the core of the Network now. Ed is going to change the profiling system from the 80/20 to 40/10 as I only get 26/5 anyway to see If it helps. Though If I lose speed due to this I will request it to be put back, as the packet loss issue isn't my side. I shouldn't have to suffer from a fault there side.

If that doesn't help an engineer is going to be sent out, he Is going to phone me tomorrow or on Wednesday to check on it again.

Nah just on 40/10 so It didn't try the higher frequencies.

Though I'm thinking maybe it could be the filter/master socket as it was replaced last time an engineer was here to fix my line about a week before the packet loss.

He replaced it due to an error he or the guy at help desk hadn't ever seen before, he thought it wouldn't remove the error from the line test but it did just pot luck. He was ready to go climbing as well, lucky for him. smile

It re-synced at 00:36 though that was automatic, the change was done at 00:08.

Whatever they did to fix it initially it seems like they have reversed it.

Do all gateways respond to ICMP or am I setting the BQM up wrong because it just shows 100% packet loss when I setup a BQM on my gateway IP, that being the first one after my router on a tracert.

Hai Guys,

I had a phone call off Ed this morning, BT are now stating that the core network is clear it is likely to be present on the local loop. An engineer has been booked for Tuesday the 26th between 8 & 1.

I'm pretty certain that it will not be resolved and will go into a deadlock matter. It's a shame they cannot fix a problem to a reasonable time scale.

Will post updates If I get anymore before Tuesday.

As you can only measure packet loss on a hop, it's quite apparent that if there's no packet loss on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. hops but there is on the 1st, then it's the 1st hop that's at fault. i.e. somewhere between the gateway and your PC - the local loop.

it would help matters tho if you did post your gateway ip.

and if you kept your pc on for at least one full day so we no see bits of full packet loss.

I can confirm the issue the OP posted and I confirmed still exists.

But again it doesnt seem to be affecting the usage of my connection so I currently suspect its a peering./transit issue.

Just had a weird moment...

Connected to the modem to check line stats around 4000 crc and 350 hec for a 24+ hour connection.

SNR margins perfect 5.9/6 down and 6 up. I then unplug the LAN2 like I always do when I go back to use the Internet. It can no longer establish a PPPoE connection, I try to connect in the HomeHub doesn't resolve it, so I restart the HomeHub. Still no PPPoE connection, I try manually again in the HomeHub nope still not having it. I log into the modem to find 300000 crcerrors, 230000 fec and about 250000 HEC errors. I try a reset of the HomeHub, still won't connect, try to manually connect again. Nope not having it, phone BT they do the normal standard restart the HomeHub & Modem. Restarting the Modem actually worked, still doesn't explain why the PPPoE connection wouldn't connect as the modem was synced the whole time and I've done what I did plenty of time's before.

If you have a spare LAN port on your router/switch you can connect a spare ethernet cable to LAN2. You'll then be able to acess stats and internet at the same time and setup 24/7 stat logging, that will show up ay problems.

What sampling interval have you got it set to. As BatBoy says, it may be a resync. Or it may not.

WIth 5-second sampling you can tell, especially on the sync speed graph.

Small bits of packet loss on/off, nothing obvious at least.

FEC Erros according to the software
http://i48.tinypic.com/11t4h8g.png

Reports no CRC errors on the software so the errors appeared before hand, or it's the software.

On 192.168.1.1
http://i45.tinypic.com/2cfse93.jpg

The errors have been really high since the switch from 80/20 to 40/10, I had 4000 crc, 500 hec and 150 fec when I was on the 80/20 package on a 48hour connection at @ 26.3Mbps sync.

This one is only at just above 14 hours

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/c19ee99ad96...

30 seconds (default), what do you recommend I move it on to?

Edit: Think it was due to a UAS, The event log reports no DSL. Though it didn't re-sync so a UAS/SES I would imagine.

tbb's bqm is a firebrick device on tbb's network.

f8lure have a hosted firebrick at AAISP and their own tool on a server at Rapidswitch.

That could give you three different routes.

Then there is such places as pingdom.com ?

Noticed a pattern sort of... when the packetloss is displayed on the gateway it will be displayed on the my connection at basically the identical times but you see it will affect my connection a tad before and a bit after it shows on the gateway.

Gateway
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/444ac5eb550...

Connection
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/a36e5589523...

Also, since the packetloss has been occuring on the gateway I've had problems watching streams, constant buffering every 3 seconds. frown

Also getting tons of FEC since the swap from 80/20 to 40/10, around 200 FEC and 4000 CRC on 80/10 @ 26.3Mbps sync (48 hour connection). Now on 40/10 getting 59m+ FEC errors, around 15, 000 a min at times and 9000 CRC + 5000HEC (overall). This on a 24.3Mbps sync with a connection time of 38 hours. The SNR being 5.8 day time, max of 6.1 but normally around 5.5 then at night time dropping to 5.1. When I was on 80/20 the SNR was 5.9/6 the majority of the time but ranging from 5.6 to 6.7SNR.

No, but f8lure didn't always show it for my connection as well and now it's nuts.

Probably means the BT network has lots of different routes to get to and from the gateway. Any one of which could be having issues.

If you compare the traceroutes, you may see the difference and maybe narrow down the problem

Qas on another forum did some investigating.

According to him the issue is on BT's link to the 'LINX' secondary public peering network', which happens to be where TBB traffic travels to BT. He hasnt found it on any other routes.

Also it seems right now BT are playing with the routing tbb uses as I am having to browse this forum with one of my proxies currently.

When I was using WinMTR all the packet loss was happening from hop 3 to the destination hop, I didn't get any packetloss on Hop 1 or 2 which is the local loop, though looking at the graph this morning.

Gateway?

Maybe an upgrade, new hardware?

Show's the exact same on my graph, though I think this is due to TBB as none of it show's on f8lure.

turns out this is affecting VM as well (todays loss spikes), so its not BT routing related.

It was due to the TBB ping box, so it should be on all graphs or at least the majority.

As another data point, here are my graphs:

TBB: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/e2f413311f3...
f8lure: http://f8luresig.mouselike.org/sig.png?/50873.png
AAISP FireBrick (from f8lure): http://f8lure.mouselike.org/proxyfirebrick.asp?ID=50873

Interestingly, nothing so far this evening on the TBB graph (as a comparison, here's last Thursday)

The engineer has gone for the day, reported nothing wrong with anything. Though wasn't happy about 350m FEC errors in 3 days though, an engineer will be returning tomorrow.

Was ok last night, I wonder if TBB decided to switch the linx network used after my post tongue

But my own line had half a million errors between 1am and 3am, some kind of issue on my line for 2 hours (looks like the same I had 3 or so weeks back). So tommorow I will very likely be interleaved and I hope DLM puts me back on fast path quickly again (it did in 2-3 days last time). Attainable rate and srn did not drop during the error burst. In fact my snr is very high at the moment as my attainable shot up again on friday but I decided not to resync the modem. So noise got injected on my line without affecting the snr. But thats a completely different issue to this thread.

My SNR has gone down to 4.4 tonight as previous days it went as low as 4.9 (Interleaved) also showing attainable rates @ 25Mbps instead of the normal 28Mbps but I think that is due to the CRC errors as I'm currently on fastpath due to the engineer. Once interleaving is applied I think I can see that moving back up a bit as I've always had 26Mbps stable on the line until BT decide to cap my line again for the 3rd time. smile

Had 2 re-syncs in the last 2 days but on return the IP has been the same, anyone had the same experience as well?

I know there are still IP's available as If I reset the PPPoE connection I will always be given one.

thats your line, my graphs are ok.

I did have a disconnection last night (even whilst interleaved), seemed to be cause by a short large drop in upstream attainable rate that lasted so short it resynced at same speed. But that was my line not the issue in this thread. You do have to be very careful you are diagnosing the right thing and the graph you posted is clearly something completly different.

I have reported my line issue now to BT, and also asked for a DLM reset as I am only interleaved because of 2 hours of error burst 3 nights ago. But from what I can see the packetloss issue on the graphs is gone since the routing change I posted about some days ago.

In your case I suggest you also report this to BT as a seperate incident. My gut guess is you have massive line errors causing that loss, especially if your gw graph is clean.

Yes, it has been diagnosed to be on the local loop. Had an engineer here for two days shown him the 353m errors in 3 days, though the errors are at 15, 000 per min throughout the day and don't get packet loss all the time while it even as it that.

"Openreach are going to look into changing the cable between your property and the cabinet. However as there are currently no spare pairs available, they may need to add new cable or take some from elsewhere. Though they could give a final position and advise no further engineering is possible, as the line meets the Universal Service Obligation (USO) to provide a working phone service. Unfortunately broadband performance is not covered by this USO."

Though I will suspect they will not change the cable, I don't really see how that is allowed. BT sell broadband to an "acceptable" level this isn't acceptable, also they shouldn't provide Broadband down a phone line if they aren't going to maintain/replace over Broadband faults.

There have been moments where there has been packet loss gateway and my connection so maybe there is a bit of both.
